I’m going to echo Rav‘s statement echoing what Ennuipoet said about U-man‘s entry. I couldn’t stop laughing for ten minutes.

(though the table is only 8.5×11, which is kinda small)

Scans can stitch together just like panoramic photos. It’s actually easier because there’s no parallax error.

Hey, that’s actually an excellent point. Cool.

Hey, guys, I wanted to ask about some edits to an entry before the contest. I was pretty edit-light this week, but one of my entries was a bit messy, and left little bits on the scan surface, most of which I cleared away (operative word being most). I didn’t notice one particular bit, which showed up in my last entry when I was editing it today. I can’t really crop it out, but it doesn’t intersect with any of the 3-d subject, it’s just on a blank white background. Is it alright if I remove it?

I have one good idea and a couple of weird ones. Thankfully, I’m thinking this week will have a lot of weird stuff. I’m getting pretty excited to see what you guys come up with.

Rav, I’ve got a little printer/scanner down here in Tucson if you’re willing to come down. It may not be the best equipment, but it’s something. I’ve picked up a few extra observing nights this week, too (7th, 8th, 9th, though if I remember correctly, you usually work the middle of the week right?).

The only reason I was able to afford my D7000 was because of a huge, unexpected windfall. I was looking at having to save up for nearly a year before that happened. Maybe by the time you save up enough for it, they’ll have enough to meet demand and the price will go down.

Also take a look at gimp, after 2.4 the scale function can be set to use a mode called Sinc (Lanczos 3), which has generated some debate over being better/worse than bicubic. I’ve been using that to upscale images, applying a slight unsharp mask then reducing back to original size with pleasing results.

If I get off work today I’ll try to do a side-by-side just to satisfy my curiosity.

I’d like to see that. Sounds intriguing.

The D7000 has the DoF preview button-very useful, as you say. I think my SRT101 has one too.

    Two things-
    A) I’m really glad to see that U-man‘s photo on the white background got into third as well-I agree with Rav that it was my favorite from this contest. Not to say that I didn’t like the others in the top three, but I liked that one best. Composition, lighting, exposure, and DoF were all great, but what I most appreciate about it is the ability to capture the subject so well. After struggling all week with my kitty (okay, only sort of my kitty), I really appreciate how difficult animal photography can be.
    B) Also happy to see that this contest got a ton of votes and we had so many people participating. It almost makes me think that we should make this an annual event. Have a big super caturday weekend once a year. Could be fun.

Wide angle primes for DX is one of the biggest holes in Nikon’s current lens line up (Canon too, I think?).

I have been thinking that, yes. Does anybody have the 35mm f/1.8? It’s a bit more expensive than I was hoping for, but if it’s worth it, I may reconsider.

    The new kit is:
    D7000
    Nikkor 18-105mm, f/3.5-5.6 kit lens
Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 FX format lens (FoV equivalent of a ~450mm lens at full zoom, which has been awesome)
Tamron 90mm prime f/2.8 macro lens

I’m looking around for a used wide, fast prime too, but I don’t have one yet.

Edit: I almost forgot about my old 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6, which is pretty much redundant now. I guess it’s good as a lighter weight solution when I don’t want to carry the 70-300, which is a beast.
