Farkback = nonresponsive. I’m still unable to post comments in Fark threads at this time.

Can I impose on someone to post OBO for me again this week?

I’d be happy to if I can have time to work with the scratchpad and make sure I do it right–but you do know it’s ‘5 is right out week’ and not ‘Weather’, right? 😉

I can see it, too, clouddancer, might I suggest bumping the contrast a bit to deepen the red? Or does that bring out colors that aren’t supposed to be there in the gravel?

And yes, mopsy I did get your PM message, I’ve just woken up later in the day as I readjust my clock to nightshift worktimes. I’ve replied. Haven’t checked any other venues yet.

I’ve only got one shot so far this week, and that one was painful, so don’t feel too bad. I may be lucky to end up with two I’m happy with.

I’m tickled pink that I will have a tough time this week deciding on the final 5IRO posts–not in what to post–but what to leave out. I feel like any combination of my final 5 would do well, and I don’t think that’s really happened for me. As I’m dropping off a 70 pt. week in the ‘rolling ten’, to feel confident in my entries is nice.

Of course, once voting begins, my mood may change. 🙄

As for this one, well there’s over a week to go; I’ll get input from our resident mod and theme suggester, and there’s time to try harder and fail better, as Uranus says. Happy as I am thus far, I’d like to think I might strike gold again (or, in this contest’s case, silver or platinum).

The bee’z might come in handy one day when I don’t have time to do active contest acquisitioning.

rav‘s picture is cool. I’d like to see what happened with a higher f-stop so the background was more in focus and you had a similar gray-scale texture matching the color textures 😉

*Oops.* I only took two images, at the same f/, pretty much as afterthoughts as I walked back to my truck. My guess, though, is it wouldn’t be as effective, as the concrete did have some small colored rocks in it, and they’d be more pronounced if clearly shown (you can see this in my image as is; bump the saturation to see it better–or worse, as the case may be.)

But thanks! As far as afterthoughts go, I did think it came out rather nicely–better than the tangerine against the white lattice fence that preceded it for 12 frames…

My own feeling on this is that the pictures will speak for themselves, and if the voters feel that a colour isn’t really popping, they won’t vote for it.
That may be too optimistic of me…

For my concrete shots, I went for the AWB. Sliding back and forth from 0 saturation to 200 (as the Canon software defines it), there certainly is some color there–I can’t imagine any actual color image being without some tonal qualities. But in comparison to the ‘pop’ portion, it’s nil. I found minor color temp adjustments lessened it even more so, though I’m afraid my monitor doesn’t see color the way others do; thus I’ve deferred to Else and Mopsy to preview a page of my wanna-bes for their input.

I agree about letting the pictures speak for themselves. The issue of one color v. many bugs me only in that a brilliant rainbow against a black and white sky seems a color-popping natural fit (it’s nature, right?). In fact, were not ‘Weather’ in the queue, I’d practically insist it be allowed so I could post one I took.

OTOH, I agee w/Else that there must be some line drawn in the color neutral sand. I await the verdict, and am glad this is being hashed out now, so I’ll have time to buy some titanium white gesso and Payne’s grey acrylics for a suitable background, if necessary. (Even that isn’t perfectly neutral, but for hecks sake, it’s damned close enough!)

    here’s one of my wanna-beez:

yes? no? There’s variation in color, but it’s one object, and that’s going to happen, no?

Another example is blue sky as a background–angle is everything in a blue sky color, even though it’s all ‘blue’.

Ok, just to clarify. The theme description says this:

Take a photo that appears to be black and white/grayscale with the exception of one object or color.

Certainly the one object or color could be located in the “background,” but the theme wording suggests it should be a single object or single color, not multiple objects of the same type just colored differently, or a multi-colored background with grayscale foreground/objects. It just sounds like we’re going to now allow for a lot more colors than the theme wording allows for, but maybe I’m confused by the different examples being offered.

I’m going for one element beyond the black/white/grey (one object) or one background beyond it. If a red rose were the color element, there will be different hues of red, depending on whether a petal is in direct light, or shadowed behind another petal. And I suppose the stem may be somewhat in the frame, which would appear green.

For backgrounds, imagine a bokehed green field beyond an aged-grey wooden fence–there would be variation to the green, to some extent.

Neither are shots I’ve taken or planned, but this is my understanding of the theme, and how I’ve (thus-far) been directing my efforts. Am I misunderstanding incorrectly?

Yes to both ravnostic. I just brightened the white background in one of mine. Like Kestrana said, as long as it is applied evenly across the entire image. And concrete is a great idea!!! I knew you would come up with something interesting!!!

I give total credit to Kes on the inversion idea, I’d have never thunk it had she not mentioned it–although as it turns out, my grey rocks STILL have not found a contest home 🙁 (I think I have better options, with my photo excursion shots today.)

As for concrete…I kinda think there will be lots of that, I just hope mine is comparable to others (okay–I hope it’s bett-ar, but who am I kidding? The competitors in this forum are not to be underestimated!!)

Mopsy, you may expect an PM from me with my potentials before the contest goes live–just to be sure I’m not out of bounds or anything like that. Maybe even tonight–I have to regear my clock to a night schedule before Wednesday, having regeared to a day schedule for various reasons, so I’ll be up late.]

My discovery of the ‘lost’ filters I got with my camera is, I think, a real boon. This contest, and “5 is Right Out”, had me really stressing–both are themes in which I didn’t think I could do well, comparatively. Final decisions aren’t made yet (there’s still time for ‘5IRO’, and certainly for ‘CPN’, of course), but I really feel like I’m starting to get ‘a groove on’.

//Voters, of course, may disagree. But then, I’m learning it’s about MY growth as a photographer, and MY satisfaction with my pictures.

Hrrmmm..I’ll have to look at my recent photos and see if I’ve missed any days yet this year–I don’t think so–maybe I’ll go for this!

About parking. Though it wasn’t clearly posted (which is in violation of Tempe’s ordinance, I happen to know, as it’s a big deal in the ASU area and I’m there a lot with my camera), apparently the lot–over a mile from ASU– was restricted to customers only. So despite the lot being empty save like 10 cars (50 or so spots), some asstard decided to slap me with the sticker. I hope they appreciated that I took some photos of it before driving off.

Difficulty: No selective desaturation or other post-processing tricks to create the effect.

Here’s a different thought. Can I increase the saturation across the whole image? Shot works fine without it, but really pops if I bump up the saturation. Concrete is the photographer’s wannabe B/W friend. 🙂

Still, it was a completely awesome time and all the people in underwear I never wanted to see!

Yeah, what’s up with that? Why don’t the beautiful people strip down and ride?

//I guess for the guys it’s the Costanza excuse about cold weather. 😆

I had a really fun and productive shoot for this contest in Tempe. Can I have two volunteers to help me decide what to use for the contest? I’ll P.M. the details to ya. Thanks in advance.

Anyone noticing any glitchy forum issues? Like failure to register topics or forums as read or even something else altogether?

Nope. (repost–don’t know what happened to the first response).

    😛
