There is a reason people still work in B&W and why it remains the choice for Fine Art Photography. IMHO B&W removes all distraction from the image and compels the viewer to concentrate on content. Also B&W as a medium for Street Photography just seems…”right” though I can’t really say why I think that.

This is the photography I wish I was shooting, the kind of raw emotion in Vivian’s work raises photography to a level of visual poetry. All the more, to me, because she never published any of it on her own.

I can quite see that. I’ve occasionally looked at certain photos I’ve taken, rendered in black and white–nothing I do compares to hers. I’d love to see them in person–the computer screen also doesn’t do justice, I know from experience (at least my ‘puter screen). She’s inspirational, though. I’m tempted to head downtown today, to a seedy area, just for kicks.

//probably will get mugged and have my camera stolen.

Also striking to me, however, is the ‘people’ content. The people are doing things–or often, not. There are no cell phones to be seen. There is no political correctness as the mother scolds the child, lit cigarette in hand. People look over the edge of a building, and no one photographs what they see while they look. No one wears an i-Pod, nor a bluetooth gizmo.

The shots of people are of people just ‘being’. And that’s a rare thing to capture in any age, and I hesitate to think its at all possible in today’s age. Slight exaggeration there, but I don’t recall seeing anyone without some sign of ‘modern’ about them, or around them, any time recently. It’s hard to spot even a plain brown paper bag anymore.

This is the 30,000th image I’ve taken with the Rebel xTi. And some guy picks his nose. 😕

Can’t say I don’t get much use from the camera, eh?

PF Chang’s Rock and Roll Marathon 2011. I took 453 images. The process of reviewing them shall be a marathon itself, of sorts. Hopefully, there will be something I can use in ‘Sports’, an upcoming theme.

Wow. The power of black and white. Wow.

//”Billy Graham is a cracker” gave me a chuckle.

I love these close contests. I’d love them better if I were up there in the top 3, but still.

Seems no matter how well I prepare, some of you just seem to prepare ‘weller’. I’m happy with my results, though; we dropped of in the ‘recent contests’ stats a week that I’d gotten 70 votes, and due to the *massive* voting this week, I’ve at least stayed pretty close on my recent averages #s. Yay!

Congrats to Olafv–so far–but congrats to the other top contenders as well–tain’t over till the fat lady sings, as they say.

Wow, some of those are really neat, and *should* do well in a contest. Weather[sic] or not, I cannot foretell for certain, with the unpredictability of the voters.

I was told by a friend that my pictures aren’t loading unless she click’s through to the big ones–anyone else having difficulty seeing my posts?

Well-known ‘people, places or things’ that most people would recognize as being from, or pertaining to, any particular regional area. Theme is GLOBAL in scope, for friendly farktographers from frontiers further afar.

Theme suggestion kudos go to ravnostic–thanks!

Two of my photos are being used by the Visitor’s Bureau for their postcards, are those OK to enter?

I’d certainly say that would qualify (and probably spectacularly to–congrats!), so long as there’s no rule against using photographs that have been used professionally (I’m not aware of any rule, but I’ll let the long-timers chime in). If it can be used on a postcard, I can easily imagine it’s use in a travel brochure (in fact, it’s on my list to get some local TBs for ideas of what to shoot–though I suggested the theme, I haven’t even pursued a shot yet.)

Re Error‘s apple scan. As scan’s go, it’s really lovely. That being said, scanners don’t really take images the way a camera does, so I can see why there would be some hesitancy in allowing them. THAT having been said, some of the new i-phones and other fandangled new technologies employ this same method; I recall seeing in the forum here a picture (U-man’s? Not sure now) where it was all funky and skewed, which was a result of this technology ‘scrolling’ to capture an image. That technology probably isn’t going to go away.

I don’t have any answers to the question of validity, but as I said, thems is some lovely apples. I wouldn’t mind replicating the picture by taking a shot from underneath a glass pane using my Canon.

Not planning on using–I’d restage, post edit, and do some other things, as well as –but with the theme on my mind I took the picture, and it might give others ideas. 😀

    //Homemade (by me). And delicious.

//edit–swapped file names and forgot! Removed the entry. My bad!

You don’t have to grind the cinnamon–just stage the scene–pour some in, put in the sticks around it. Or next to it. Or whatever.

I’m having a really tough time with my 3 musicians. I cannot decide on candid or staged, nor color vs. b/w. Any and all are good, I just don’t know what will be better liked. I think I’m going to FB this.

Is it Tuesday night already? I hate that I have 1) 4 composed scenes, all of which I love love love (well, 5 actually, but one I can hold for another contest) and 2) 1 scene with 5 different shots taken, all of which I like, and I have to pick among them.

How do you people make those final hard choices!?!?

[edit to ask] do ya’ll prefer scenes of people that look completely candid and simply meet the theme very well, or scenes of same said people that invoke humor and intra-theme qualities?

My husband’s 17 pound 8-inch diameter granite mortar and pestle came today as well, and that’s just begging to be photographed.

That can be a two-fer, 3 somethings next to it for 5IRO, and one something else for CPN. 😀

Not usually, and I hadn’t planned on allowing it. Else, opine?
