ParticipantI’ve got a 10-22 f/3.5-4.5, a 24-70 f/2.8 (my primary walking around lens), and a 70-200 f/2.8. I use the 70-200 with a 1.4x tele-extender to shoot my son’s football games. With the extender that’s 280mm and with the crop factor it’s equivalent to about 450mm full-frame. And I find that more reach would be handy a lot of times.
Another consideration if sports is important – a lot of sports need really fast glass due to low lighting conditions and the faster shutter speed you want to use to capture the action. I don’t know Nikon’s lens catalogue, but if there’s a faster lens in that zoom range then maybe it’s better to hold off and either save up for that or just satisfy your lens craving for now with the wide angle.
Not to digress, but how exactly does the whole 280/450mm thing play out? I have a Rebel, so I know there’s a 1.6 number in there somewhere, and that my f1.8 50mm is equivalent to about an 85mm. It doesn’t affect my focal range; I’m sure it affects my field of view; but how duz i doo da mathz? Does it change the technical f/1.8 to something better or worse? Is it merely a field of view thing? What about lens distortion? If the image uses more of the center of the lens configuration, is it bettar? Warse?

ParticipantI *think* I have a grand idea for a four piece set (which, if done well, would make a nice collage on a wall, 2×2). Trouble is, one is the standard shot one would expect with water–and I don’t think I’ll pull it off as well as those with fancier equipment. Oh, well. I’ll give it a shot. I am excited for this; I expect everyone will bring their A game.

ParticipantYou’re talking to a guy with a 4 1/4″ newt in the closet… 61″ is VERY impressive!
The other sad part with my 8″ Schmidt
I kinda feel like the 61″ isn’t impressive enough…Though, I’ve been there almost 80 times now…”
you ain’t seen nothing until you’ve seen Subaru. 322″ of sheer telescopular goodness.
bunch of size queens, if you ask me 😀 😆 🙄 😉

ParticipantSo has it been decided that we can enter four but it is not mandatory?
Yeah, this. Because I totally have a concept for four, that would make a nice set (if I can pull it off–thank goodness this is my ‘light’ overtime weekend!)

ParticipantDuh. Elsinore, can you envotenate 2011-05-11 08:01:55 PM for me, please?

ParticipantI didn’t and don’t expect too much from my shots. I fully admit that over the course of the year, there’s easily 100–more likely 600 pictures–that are better than mine. And ditto for most of the images from any of us; It’ll come down the how the voter gods cast their fickle lots, and as usual, we have no idea.
Some nice trends, though.

ParticipantIt seems the flood protection thingy is turned off. I posted all three right after another with no problems.

ParticipantThis is just pickling me tink.

ParticipantSo…is there any way possible that a shot of 3 Twinkie?-like cake products, posed, could be construed as ‘nsfw’? Other than a little contorting of one among three, and 1/10th gram of Crisco?*, there have been no alterations to the gender unspecified, neutered, asexual Twinkie?-like cake products. Just asking. I always wondered how it would have done in ‘Just Desserts’.
*(get your minds out of the gutter!)

ParticipantThey ARE fun, aren’t they? I modified my DP lens; I now use the press dies in front of the lens; a neoprene ring that’s been cut to size holds them in. Easier to change, for one, and far better pictures. All of the shots in my gallery of Tonto Nat’l Monument taken with that lens feature them in that configuration(did I post that yet? Or did I fergetaboudit?) Works much better in the resulting images. If I weren’t in the middle of working 6 days straight, I’d show ya. Or, friend me at FB (Russell Vallelunga); I’ve got them in a gallery there.
//EDIT–and oh, yeah, I really like the 2nd and 4th ones here.

ParticipantDon’t besmirch the win on technical finesse, Plama. Just goes to show that even a p/s liter farktographer has as good a chance as someone with far better equipment, given the right picture. I, being the Star Trek geek that I am, LOVED the shot. I’ll be looking for a Romulan Warbird or Klingon Bird of Prey up in the skies, probably forever more. (I think a Borg Cube is a bit much to ask for of a cloud).

ParticipantCongrat’s to Plama on his 2nd win! Oh, and same to that other guy who tied him, whats-his-name.
(Just glad I didn’t totally bomb this one, after my fine showing in ‘Weather’. Damned well better be a good monsoon/haboob season this year; I need to replenish my stock!)

ParticipantI know it’s late at this point, but LikeTheSearchEngine: Lightning of the sun. is stitched. You can tell by the pixels, especially on the large size at flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23817561@N08/4162589318/sizes/l/ .
Totally did not see that, but you’re right; very obvious. Good show!

ParticipantYou mean the fact that it’s upside down?
Ding ding ding ding–we have a winner!
//I thought surely someone would have mentioned it before.
ravnostic
ParticipantThat’s land showing in the bottom portion right?
Yep. However, this is a ‘B’ shot to one I’ll be using in an upcoming Orionid-suggested theme. So there’s the hint, CISS
