ParticipantLast year, 8 people became Farktographers in the Happy Anniversary theme – we hadn’t seen those folks before, so they MUST have entered new stuff.
I’m thinking that the preference is to only enter stuff that you’d entered before, but, like most of our “rules”, they are really just preferences. We could do some whack-job statement of the rules like “if you’ve ever entered a theme before, you must repost those entries here. The only exception is if you have fewer than three previous entries, feel free to enter new stuff (‘natch, total newbies by definition have fewer than three previous entries, so total newbies get to enter all new stuff – we want to be inclusive).”

ParticipantYou know, if its new technology, then I must use it or I’ll surrender my geek-cred.
If I had the upcoming/current/recent list available to me, I’d probably put a little widget on the FSM (on the RHS) that would list the contests, with highlights applied to each type (“upcoming”, “current”, “recent”). “Current” would link the the the Fark.com thread. “Upcoming” back here to the calendar (please provide that URL) and “Recent” would link to the contest page on the FSM. So, I’d use the FT.net feed as visual sugar.
A darker part of the FSM already uses the Fark RSS feed for nefarious purposes, so reading the feed should not be an issue.

ParticipantHere’s what the FSM has to say about it:
Fark (TM) and Totalfark (TM) are registered trademarks of Fark.com, LLC, and the content on Fark.com is protected by federal copyright law. This site's use of the intellectual property of Fark.com is pursuant to an express written license, and said license confers no endorsement, affiliation, or sponsorship of this website by Fark.com. Any republication of Fark.com content or use of Fark.com's trademarks requires an express written license by Fark.com.
All photographers showcased on this site are the legal copyright holders for the photographs displayed and attributed. The photographs are not to be considered free for any other use without written consent from the copyright holder. This site's owner ('schnee') makes no claim on any photograph other than his own.
IANAL, of course, but I hope that it (a) protects and (b) satisfies all parties. I’ll probably tweak it to ape whatever Fark.com’s rewritten policy is.

ParticipantHere’s the exchange I had with Drew way back when. He even gave me permission to reprint:

nope. We request a non-exclusive right to republish but we don't ask for
ownership
the language is strong because the attorneys like that way, however I'll
go on record as saying I'm never going to claim we own those

If I stamp "Copyright (c) 2006 Brent Schneeman" on an image and then enter it in a Farktography contest, do I retain the copyright or have I assigned the copyright of the image to Fark? What if I don't put the stamp?
His intent and the actual wording seem a bit out-of-phase, but I’m not a lawyer.

Participant‘mofo‘s answer from drew (note, date 2006) is essentially the same answer I got from him last year as well.

Participantbtw, there’s a really good chance that the FSM will be down for a bit due to the new Fark. Since I’m camping this weekend with 1.0 and 2.0, I’m not sure when I’ll have a chance to get it going again.
“really good chance” does not mean that it will break, only that it probably will.
schnee
ParticipantAlso, big changes in store–see the TF Forum if you’re TF for a link.

ParticipantI’m trying to port the FSM’s FAQ to a blog system. The question about how levels get calculated is the top item right now. You are all invited to view this work in progress.
schnee
ParticipantAnd don’t forget, if you don’t like your level, you can always grease Schnee’s palm – it’s what I did 😛
/the cheque is in the mail!
Cool. And you’re from Melbourne? So if I were to say “I sank piss with me mates at the ‘G” you’d know what I’m saying? ‘Cause I really did do that back in 2000 for an Aussie Rules game.
schnee
ParticipantWhoa, I’m an “Elite Farktographer” despite only having 10 entries total over 10 contests, only 6 of which I actually entered.
Yes, the bar is pretty low…

Participant[voice=”millera9’s Grandma”]millera9, you were always my favorite! Any brothers and/or sisters and/or cousins that you may or may not have – I never liked them. Do what the nice man with the stapler says! Give him your lenses![/voice]

ParticipantThat 70-200 is one sweet lens (I have one). And the 24-70? Well, if ‘mofo doesn’t get you first, just let me be the first to say that I don’t look like anyone who would ever mug you. I’ve even been told that I bear a striking resemblance to your grandmother.
schnee
ParticipantAh yes….how does the FSM keep track of things.
This is the active farktographer filter. basically, you have to keep participating to stay in the standing. When I first did the “best averages” report, I did not factor in number of entries, and the best averages devolved into the one hit wonders. So I had to create a minimum entries criteria of sorts. The details elude me right now, but assume that your boobies contest was 20 contests ago. You need something like 10 or 20 total entries to get listed (I can’t remember the exact ratio). There is also a 10-entry minimum, just to ensure people have skin in the game.
The calculations ensure that only active participants are rewarded with listings. But, you can “bank” entries so that you can take a break. For example, since you can enter 3 per contest, and you only really need to enter 1 per to be listed, any extras buy you time-off. The calculations also mean that people will drop off the rankings as they stop participating, so that if Chaka stops participating, s/he will eventually drop off, giving the top spot to someone else.
The darker the shading in the ranks, the more active a farktog is. So the folks in white are in most jeopardy of being delisted.
Upshot? Veruca will be listed forever since she has a kagillion entries.
I really need to (a) put this in the FAQ and (b) expose the “activity level” in the farktographer portfolios. But you all know that I’ll never have time to do either.
schnee
ParticipantNo problems. Well, except for the picture looking like crap due to browser resizing.
bingo.
/not yours in particular, that is…
schnee
ParticipantBooze brought the boobies. Who’d’ve thunk it?
Yeah, I noticed that too. Hobbies brought boobies as well. I think a correlation can be inferred.
