ParticipantAs a matter of interest, this contest will mark my first entry from a cellphone camera.
SilverStag
ParticipantI expose for the action, and let the non essentials blow out or go dark.
Sometimes that’s easy, in the case of a brightly-lit stage or theater production, sometimes, it gets difficult (like a gym with mixed lighting). You just have to muddle through, but here’s where high ISO’s and fast lenses can really save you.
There’s really no substitute for fast glass and fast film. (Or fast sensors, as the case may be)
I agree that it’s impolite to use a hobbyist level flash in the face of unprepared performers; most people who perform are used to the annoyance of tiny flashes from pocket cameras, but hitting them with something with a 120 guide number is a bit overpowering.
You’d be surprised what you can get with an f/1.8 prime and 400 speed film, though. This scene was lit with no more than a couple of 60-watt bulbs:

Rehearsal by pjern, on FlickrCan you show us some of your shots for a friendly critique?

ParticipantI’m somewhat limited as to getting out these days- being good enough isn’t the issue for me, it’s the lack of freedom to go out and shoot. I have to use stuff out of my archives. Tagging doesn’t do me a damn bit of good either, because I’ve used several different hosting providers over the years, and stuff is spread everywhere.
I do like the Statute of Limitations idea Zero Exponent came up with, though.

ParticipantHere’s the final tally on this one: 2748 votes, which puts it almost 1000 votes more than the past 11 contests’ average and at the #17 spot all-time. What I found most interesting, though, is the comparatively low number of entrants and entries in this one:

So, something about this one spoke to the voters even if it didn’t get quite as many farktographers.
Huh, 4 of those are mine. I better get to work 🙂

Participant]See, kes, you’ve nothing to worry about. Your house will be full of .30 cal holes long before it burns down. 😉
You gotta ventilate it somehow.

Participant3D subjects is a very good place to draw the line. It elevates the process from being copying to… something else.

ParticipantHere’s the thread that prompted the original discussion. Unfortunately it was part of a weekly theme thread, and while I could separate those posts, they would lose some context, as the issue came up on an entry that week that was a scan of a piece of paper. Discussion starts on page 4:
http://www.farktography.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=2066&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45Wow, I missed that discussion entirely 😯
I still think there’s a discussion to be had, however. Suppose, as a thought experiment, that I mounted a Sinar 125mm lens in an 18 inch square box, and in place of the ground glass, I used a scanner bolted to the back wall somehow. I’d need a laptop in place of a shutter release. Is it photography?
SilverStag
ParticipantI’m going to chime in and agree with Uranus: Error used the scanner in an artistic manner, and got a great result. I think that’s enough to qualify it as photography; he clearly did more work than just scanning a photograph or magazine page.
SilverStag
ParticipantI already love the photos we are getting this week!
SilverStag
Participant…but I think I’ve stumbled upon a ‘win’ idea.
You know, I’m retracting that statement. Subtlety, as I recall, does not bode well for votes in farktography. I’ll still do it, for I likes it, but I won’t pin my hopes upon it.
I don’t know about that: This one did alright for me:

ParticipantBack to the three subjects at hand (if you’re missing a couple fingers), need this be three distinct subjects, or a more loose definition? For example, a three story building, a three pronged fork, a three lane road, or three sides of a cube.
In the original theme topic, I sad “groups of three” which I took to mean 3 cars, three hammers, three boobies (If you can find Eccentrica Gallumbits!) The intent was to have 3 separate items, rather than one item that had a meta-aspect of 3.
SilverStag
ParticipantI got one of those el cheapo 500mm Opteka lenses for Christmas. It the weather ever gets above subfreezing and clears up a bit, I’m planning to shoot with it to evaluate it.
