ParticipantYou can get a bit of streak with a three to five minute exposure. But fifteen to thirty minutes is better for real trails. And yeah, it’s a slow process, because if you screw up one shot, you’ve lost a half-hour or more. I bought about six Chinese batteries for my camera, and that helps, having them to swap out. A 35 minute shot + a 35 minute dark frame at 0? can drain a full battery if you’re not careful.
You’ll get more stars the more open your aperture is, but at the same time, you’ll get more ambient light with the wider apertures, which can wash out the stars. I only shoot really wide open, like f/1.8, when it’s totally dark outside with no moon. Other times, I’m at anywhere between f/4 and f/8. I mostly shoot at ISO100, but sometimes go up to 200. I use a 20D, and if you nail the exposure on the shot and don’t have to try and stretch it in RAW, noise isn’t too much of a factor. I’ve gotten pretty good at being able to judge what exposure time will suit what light, but that’s taken four years of practice.
It’s really a trial and error process more than anything else. get a good sturdy tripod, a remote release, and be prepared to spend an inordinate amount of time standing in the dark. I find music on headphones enhances the whole experience greatly. A timer remote is a great investment if you really don’t want to drive yourself crazy. You can get a cheap but totally functional one on ebay from China for under $50.

ParticipantI’m pretty fond of my Sigma 20mm f/1.8. I’ve only used it for night shots, though.

ParticipantI had this great idea for setting foreign coins up on their edge and setting them afire with gelled acetone, but sadly, I forgot to bring all my interesting coins home from work.

Participantstupido, do you have any samples?

Participantthe one he has is the A410. it gets good enough reviews. I’m probably being over-critical of the image quality.

ParticipantI’ve had my DSLR since June and after I found a good Linux tool for decoding RAW images I switched. Also, memory cards seem to drop in price every month, so the size is becoming less and less of a concern. When I got my camera, they were selling good 8G cards for $44.
When I got mine, 2GB cards were $200.
Costco often has really good deals on 4GB cards, which are generally what I use now.
It’s really not that much of a problem for my night shots, as I’m lucky to get three shots an hour or so on some nights. Sometimes as many as six or ten an hour, if the moon is fairly bright..

ParticipantI bought my son a powershot a few years ago, and I was never all that impressed with the lens on it. I’ve had a bias against the whole powershot line because of it.

ParticipantI never think about white balance until post-processing. I shoot RAW and use Canon’s DPP software most of the time to convert. Under White Balance, there is a color temperature slider there that is just awesome to use.

Participantdoes a mountain count if it’s not exposed rock? that could be confusing in the headline.

ParticipantI’ve got about 250GB of photos. I always shoot in RAW, and that includes the post-processing which generally includes saving as a full-sized psd file and then a reduced jpg for the web.

ParticipantI’ve done that too, but that won’t tell you if fark is going to reject a link or a file for being too big.

ParticipantDoes everybody know about the Fark Scratchpad that lets you preview your posts? I’m always screwing something up when I prepare my posts to cut and paste into the contest, and I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before.

ParticipantI’ve got mine picked. Turns out I had rather a lot to chose from, what with the Abandoned Things, Abandon All Hope, Middle of the Night, and A Second Of Your Time

Participantthose are kinda cool.
hey, I’m looking at buying a new p&s for my older son, and from what I can see, some of the panasonic lumix models can be had on amazon for around $150. Not as cheap as what you had, but not half-bad, either.

ParticipantI pay $10 a month for my hosting, but it’s a huge amount of bandwidth and space and hosted domains.
