I had the thought of a wind farm as well. I like it. It’s something different. But I have hundreds or regular farms around and would have to take a bit of a drive to get to the windmills. Plus, I find them kinda hard to photograph well.

IMHO, I like #1. Consider cropping out the far left one that is motionless.

btw – soosh, thanks for the light pollution inspiration from ‘Middle of the Night’. I went out Friday night because the sliver moon was cool when I was driving home for dinner with the family. By the time the kids were in bed and I was out in the corn fields, clouds had covered the moon. However, the nearby city provided nice hazy light on the sky. I have one I’ll enter Wed. that has stars up high but light pollution down low. It looks a bit like a sunrise but the stars tell you it’s not.

I’ve had a lot of fun lately working with light pollution as a light source. It’s actually quite versatile once you learn its characteristics.

Here’s one I took a week or so ago, nearly 1am, fully dark with just a few light sources in the fog to the naked eye. there was fog and a snowstorm moving in, but still on the other side of the lake. We get this fog/high overcast here that works like a giant diffuser.

the Canon Digital Photographer Pro software does a good job with RAW conversion, and even better, you can register a particular setting or set of settings (called a “recipe” in Canon’s lingo) and apply it to other photos. Try using the Color Temperature slider on white balance, which is pretty much infinitely adjustable for color.

If you don’t have the original discs that came with your camera and don’t have DPP installed, you can download the “update” from canon’s website, which is really a full install that looks for a few registry settings. Just do the following before installing and you can install from the update:

    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste in the following:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonEOS Utility]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonDPP]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonZoomBrowser EX]

    3. Save the file as Canon.reg
    4. Double-Click the file and answer Yes when asked if you want to add the information to the registry.

A friend of mine does some work for the city of Peoria and asked if she could use this pic for a banner at a trade show. I’d get my name on it and that’s cool. No cash – but that’s OK. I just do this stuff for fun.

I did this pano before I learned about the auto-white balance on my Canon. I don’t think it jumps off of the pic, but my eye is immediately drawn to the color shifts in the sky. I smudged them in PS with some success but they’re still there. It bugs me. And if a bunch of people are going to see it (with my name on it) I’d like to make it perfect. How hard is it to color match them and then re-stitch into a pano? What is the easiest way to do it? Uuuuuh, I’m red-green color deficient. I may need to get my wife’s help.

    Did you shoot in RAW?

Use MS Paint or something and circle where you see the worst shifts. I think you’ll probably have to try to isolate the sky and use either the channel mixer to adjust the color or maybe use an adjustment layer to add some color where you think it’s deficient. I honestly don’t think it needs adjusting. I see one spot where you could maybe use the healing brush to cover up what looks like a light seam right over the furthest two bridge trestles.

And if you’re not getting paid, I would specify that they only use it for the one time use. Otherwise they may think they have the rights to it for whenever they want.

soosh are there any hatcheries or “fish farms” near Juneau?

There’s a hatchery, that’s an idea. The cool photos from it are in the summer, though, when the pens are full of wild fish returning from the sea. No fish farms, though, as they are outlawed in Alaska.

Yeah, but three weeks of funny in a row is something I’m not particularly feeling, either. Not a lot of available farmland around here. I’ll think of something.

    the aftermath of my shooting:

and you can’t tell, but the singed orange thing there in the leaves is one of the circus peanut guys from last week. the apartment building backdrop in this week’s contest was last week’s balloon toss game, and the circus peanut guy was still stuck to the cardboard.

I’d like to solicit feedback on a photo that made my finalists list this week. Is this,

“middle of the night” enough for this contest? It was dark outt, but not too long after sunset.

I’m fine not using it, but I do like it so I thought I’d get a ruling before the contest goes live.

I could go either way with that. On the one hand, the photo does look like dusk, with the color in the sky. And the idea of the contest is to get a feeling of the middle of the night, not just evening.

On the other hand, shots like corsec’s, and plenty of mine taken in Alaska during full moon or the summer, look like daylight. I’m all for inclusiveness. My vote would be that it’s fine.

    Great shots!

I am going to suck out this week…no time to get out and shoot. Although I did snap a few shots the other day at 2am. My wife thinks I have completely lost it.

Heh. I’ll never forget the look on the taxi driver’s face at 3am when he pulled up at an empty parking lot next to our glacier lake in the middle of winter to pick me up. I had a full-leg cast, two tripods, a backpack of gear, a ton of down clothing and a frozen beard.

The only thing he said to me was “what in the fuck are you doing out in this?” (it was about 0?F)

I’ve got an epson perfection 4180, but it doesn’t have anything automated. And yeah, that white background thing, god help you if you misplace that and want to scan a document.
