ParticipantNow go back and photgraph the parking lot for the hoppered parking lot contest…

ParticipantI appreciate the offers. If I have something cool enough to ask for the effort, I’ll let you know.
Otherwise, I’ll just come back and be in awe of what y’all did.
Thanx for the offers!

ParticipantShoot.
I’ve been adding a focus on doorways and stuff the last few weeks, and it only today occurs to me that I won’t be able to post any of ’em as I’ll be high over the Atlantic when the contest goes live, and we’re leaving the ‘puters at home for safety, security and mental health’s sake so even posting late isn’t an option…
Oh well… I’ll just have to save ’em for Portal 2 in 2014, I guess…

ParticipantTo find old cameras for cheap, all you really need is time and enough communities near you to have a variety of garage sales every weekend.
Even though I’m in Kodak-land, the antique shops generally charge sphincter-clenching amounts for old cameras, but garage sales can be as low as $1 each, so just stay alert.
Despite having almost more than we can decorate with, we never paid more than $5 for a camera (I don’t think). Hell, my first one I found while I was in HS (decades ago) and was on top of somebody’s trash pile. Free is good.

ParticipantJust… wow.
That had to take far more time than you’re letting on.We’ve got like 20 old cameras here (they’re very decorative and go well with the B&W photos on the wall -all mine, btw) and I don’t know that I’d honestly even think to take the time to do what you’re doing.
Query: how many people do you think are doing what you’re doing with old cameras?
I ask, because even though I live in the same town, yesterday was my very first visit to the George Eastman House. They’ve got a display of a history of commercially available cameras, from the early box brownies to a few modern dSLRs, to some toys (most dramatically a Voltron camera). If what you’re doing is unique and innovative enough, they probably would LOVE to hear from you. I’m thinking it is, and they would.

Participantahhh… nevermind…
Maybe ennuipoet might need some help with his new venture into photography as small business.. just a thought

ParticipantWhat is it?
I’m always in the mood for freebies… but not for something pointless…

ParticipantJust a plug for some (somewhat) old school technology, as well as a local company that’s been struggling lately.
All those external HDs and domains and stuff sounds neat and all, but Kodak makes archive quality CD-ROMs (and I’m assuming DVD-ROMS as well, but I don’t know about those). They’re more stable and reliable than regular CDs and have a shelf life of like 75 years or so (unlike regular CDs which are only designed for 5-7, despite how good your Nine Inch Nails CD you bought senior year sounds).
They cost more, but they’re worth it, if you’re saving precious memories. Also, they fit in the safe deposit box easier, if you really wanna keep ’em safe.

ParticipantQuestion for the experts (and maybe the answers will help zincprincess:
My Slik tripod has a hook at the bottom of the center post, presumably to hang heavy stuff from or to bungee it to the ground. Does this provide enough stability in most circumstances?
I mean, no tripod’s going to help in a hurricane or earthquake, but in moderate winds, or on a sandy beach would that be a reasonable solution for most people? My tripod’s a nice lightweight aluminum, has a handle and is not a tremendous problem to transport.

ParticipantNicely done, Farktographer. I like how the trees ground the photo–I find you really need something interesting in the foreground in wide field astrophotography to really make a good image. Even just a few trees can improve it greatly.
If/when I find the right place, I’m hoping I can use my Jeep with its top down for this.

ParticipantFWIW the two links I supplied were for free programs also, but I’m very glad Pandora worked for you.
While I haven’t deleted anything accidentally, given the fragility of Photoshop, I’ve experienced traumatic digital loss… I feel your pain and I’m very glad you haven’t lost everything.

ParticipantYou can try these in the meantime:

We used these in an effort to get some pics off my wife’s SD card. They did find a whole bunch of deleted files, just not the ones we were looking for (it had been many months since the accidental deletion, so they could have been over-ridden).
Worth a shot anyway…

ParticipantOne of my shots is pointed away from water, but it’s pretty obvious that I’m very close to an ocean.

ParticipantWhatever you can! 😉
Was it a nice house? (I’m curious what those here with more experience selling images have to say…I was gonna start at double whatever the cost of printing was…)
It’s a very nice house. Directly to the right of the image above. They’ve got riverfront property and the Cadillac SUV in the driveway… and an automated sprinkler system I had to work around (but that actually made some of the stars more vibrant as the water passed in front of a light source during the shot.)
The last time I sold an image I was in high school. I shot a salon owner’s car at a car show. Double printing’s what I charged. That was like 25 years ago or so, so I’m not sure about now.
