ParticipantThe too blue one is a direct result of not paying attention to the camera settings. It would be been a great photo if not for that. I also tend to no play around in photoshop with the pics, mostly due to ignorance of the process.
I happen to know you’ve got a wife who’s darn good at that sort of thing and would (probably) be more than happy to help you at least do some minor recoloring.
If it wasn’t for Photoshop, I’d have even worse stats than I do. (I made the mistake the other day of looking at my Bibliostats profile… bleah!) I know better than to do heavy post-processing, but I like to bump the saturation and play a smidge with the levels prior to posting. Occasionally the contrast needs a bit of play. I haven’t had to do much in the way of adjusting the hue, but if I had a shot like you’ve got, I’d do it.
At least you’ve still got that first one to go with. I spent 2 days at Bills training camp. Shot over 500 pics, and wound up with a grand total of 10 to choose from, and even then the choice was pretty easy… I need a longer telephoto lens… (don’t tell my wife I said that… it’s gonna be a very long time before that happens).

ParticipantI think your first one’s best.
The third one’s nice, but you should ask Yzzie to adjust the hue so it’s less blue.
The equestrian shots in your stream are nice, and that ice boat one’s going to do really well.

ParticipantWell, I managed to pare it down to 17 choices. I’m likely suffering from proud dad bias on several, so independent opinions would be appreciated if you’ve got the time. Candidates are here. TIA.
…and this is why I’m totally out-classed.
Yeah… what he said…

ParticipantWhen I was a pizza driver in the mid-90s the store owner had a Nintendo system set up for slow days/nights. Our favorite game was Uniracers. I was out on a delivery when they set up my username, and due to the fact that I was driving a Yugo at the time, they gave me the name Yugoboy. I really liked the way it rolled off the tongue, and it’s been my name ever since.
It’s so much a part of my on-line identity, that I’d probably respond if someone called me Yugoboy off-line in the real world. On those occasions when “Yugoboy” is taken (like on Last.fm) I go with Yugoboy99. I guarantee there’s not 99 of us, and that way it’s either one or the other, and I don’t have to remember a ton of different ones.
Somewhere I’ve got a photo of that old car. I gotta find it and scan it. It seriously had the best radio of any car I ever owned. I could turn it way up and hear it 50 feet away with the windows shut. If it hadn’t nickle and dimed me to pieces, I’d probably still have it.

ParticipantBackpack’s somewhat stealthy, but pretty much anyone who cares to know, knows that Targus backpacks generally hold something important/expensive. My other Targus backpack holds my laptop, for instance.
Also, I just looked, and the zipper pulls on the camera bag don’t have holes to facilitate lock usage.Yugoboy
ParticipantVery aware of the pickpockets. I never use my back pockets for anything anyway. I’m mostly afeared for my camera bag (it’s backpack style) but as I type this I realize I can just use my TSA lock for my luggage to keep the bag “sealed”.
Fortunately, I come into this with a background in photography, just never had enough of a budget to really stretch myself. (When we went through my camera bag to prepare it for my new toy, we found like 4-6 rolls of shot but undeveloped film.) I got Photoshop at the same time I got my darkroom equipment. Guess which one got used for the last 5 years.
Now, I’ve got a digital camera that I can really play with. My old one was decent, but it just wasn’t adjustable enough. All the features were there for manual control, but they were so clunky that I never used ’em. It was a decent point and shoot. With my birthday gift (due to the Italy trip) I can take as many shots as I want and it costs me nothing. And everything’s adjustable! So I’m playing playing playing. I’ll HAVE to slow down once September comes and I have to go back to work, but until then…. the sky’s the limit.
As for post-processing… I mentioned I play with photoshop, right? I have to keep myself from too much post-processing… rules is rules.
The one thing I should probably ask, though: what’s the best book to tell me all about my new Nikon? The manual is way inadequate, and I KNOW there’s stuff I can do with it that I am unaware of.

ParticipantYeah… I’m still at the “I wonder what THIS does?” stage. Trying to get as much experimentation out of the way before going to Italy. Those won’t be re-do-able shots. Gotta get as many right the first time as possible.
I still find at times I’m skewing “hot” on my manual settings. I’ve also been trying out different things to see what impact they have, and how to do some in-camera fixing of the situation. I’m not a big flash guy (I prefer natural light) but it’s obvious that there are times when a flash is the only way to get what you want/need. Still learning…
I guess once I get to Ansel Adams stature I might be willing to ease up.
Honestly, after doing photoshop for lo these many years and getting some pretty decent voting results, it’s a little discomfiting to be doing so badly at Farktography. So… I’m trying to make up for lost time.

ParticipantI’ll have to bear all of this in mind. I still think I’ll get to 10k before September.
20k may take longer, depending. Some of the shoots are like that Blue Angel shoot… the action’s so fast, I’m tossing 5 or 8 shots every time they passed over head. Same with training camp. I don’t want to miss a good catch, so I’ll shoot like 4 on each route. When shooting macros or more stationary targets (i.e. buildings or cars) there’s fewer shots due to more time to get the shot.

ParticipantVacation time as well as a theme that doesn’t sound like it will turn up what we cranked out.
I’m assuming something similar for the Bokeh contest as that’s such an “inside” term (I’d never heard of it before the contest, and I majored in photography in high school).
Yugoboy
ParticipantInspired by your count, I decided to count my shots.
I’m at 6520 that I’ve kept on my Nikon. Since late April. I can’t decide if I’m profligate, or insane. I should come close if not go over next month in Italy. I’ll probably get another 3-400 in before this week’s over. I’m headed back to the Bills’ training camp tomorrow for the Sports Photography contest (I took 230 there yesterday, with nothing I’m so thrilled with… I’m not even a Bills fan, there just isn’t another team in town). I’m also gonna do some more night photography Tuesday.
Oh… yeah… that burger looks real nice. Good job on both the cooking and the photography.
Yugoboy
ParticipantSo… to clarify…
to actually be “bokeh” and not just shallow depth of field, the out of focus part needs to be somewhat identifiable as not just blurry shapes?
Yugoboy
ParticipantNFL training camps opened just in time for this contest…

ParticipantI’m trying to see if I’ve got anything worth asking ennuipoet to OBO for me.
I wonder… due to their lack of being “portals” but they are windows… are stained glass windows in or out?
I’m not sure if I’d use one anyway, but I’ve been going into every open church I come across… got a few pics so far.

ParticipantI’m not sure my class even HAD a 20th…
I know the 10th was a miserable clusterfuck, mainly because it was held at a drinking establishment, and the organizers failed to reserve the place, so there were the regulars, along with the kind of person who goes to a 10-year reunion (i.e. not me… I sent a 2 word message with somebody I knew who did go).
My wife and I (both from the same class, but we hooked up later) have no intention of going back… 25th is in 2 years… god am I old…
Yugoboy
ParticipantFunny… I just did the same thing for a workshop I attended all last week. I realized early on that there wasn’t a photographer (at these things there’s always somebody, and I hate being in front of the camera) so I just jumped in and started shooting. I didn’t ask, and no one cared. I posted the shots on a SkyDrive account and put the link on the group’s Yahoo Group. I’ve gotten nothing but positive feedback.
Go in shooting. Don’t ask. You will be stunned by how many people will pose without you even asking. Also, realize almost everybody will have their cell phones and P&S shooting their own shots. They’ll be grateful to you for introducing quality photography to the event.
While I may or may not be as outgoing as you, being behind the camera instead of in front of it really helps mitigate the stress.
Seriously, just act as if you should be doing it, and no one will care. There may be a few shy people… don’t shoot ’em directly.
Make sure you have a way of sharing these with the participants, whether it’s collecting email addresses on a napkin, or whatever… people will be less pleased if they can’t access them if they want them.
(Also, think of this as an opportunity to get some entries for the Portraits of Strangers hoppered contest)
