Scarlet R: foxiejo’s entry was previously used in Waterscapes

Oh, and would you rather I PM these or is this OK?

No volcanoes in my A’s, but a couple in my bees.

I’m fairly certain I read about this a few years back, perhaps when this guy’s thesis came out. IIRC, at that time they used an array of cameras to capture the image data that the software then used to manipulate the focus.

Pretty cool indeed, assuming it makes it to the dSLR market and has no other drawbacks (aside from image size – I’m guessing its raw image data is significantly larger than a normal camera).

I’m with you, olavf. I had a bunch to choose from and have no idea if I made the right choices. I feel pretty good about them, but I know this theme is gonna bring out a lot of stiff competition.

But besides that, welcome to the forum! I enjoyed your glass creations during the Scanner as Camera theme.

Oh yes, this. I thought your glass bead/shard scans were quite creative and well done.

If it’s the same frame but cropped differently, that’s not OK, but as long as it’s a different shot, even if it’s of the exact same subject from the exact same angle, it’s kosher.

… ’cause if they were Canons, she would’ve worn herself out before being able to do functional damage, at which point her photographer boyfriend would’ve seen what she tried to do, clubbed her silly for it with the 70-200mm, and then went on to his next photoshoot uninterrupted. 😛

Great work although I do want to note, and Elsinore or linguine or curious can correct me if I’m wrong, but they did allow more than 3 entries in the early contests, prior to the current rules being instituted. I don’t know when the change actually happened though.

It happened at contest #7. The first 6 contests (of which I have 4-6) are considered “reference only” and while they’re still assigned places & votes and the contests have stats, those entries and contests don’t figure into cumulative user or contest stats.

At some point I’ll put an asterisk next to those contests with a note to explain that.

NBD makes a good point about the potential applicability of scanner images to most of our themes, so I might not be as decided as I first seemed. As long as they’re the exception, a scanner image here and there might be OK (as long as we stick to the 3D rule and it’s not just scanned magazine images and the like).

    … and something I think I’m gonna enjoy even if I don’t manage to use it for it’s intended purpose (wide-field astrophotography)… a 70-200mm L ISII USM.

Congrats! As an owner of one of those myself, I know the pain you’re talking about. Did you get the ouch! f/4 or the ouch! this-thing-costs-more-than-my-first-car f/2.8?

Wow, that really is an awesome shot. Congrats… and condolences on your job situation. That part sucks. Best wishes on the new job search.

While I think we proved that scanned images can be considered art, it’s just not the same process as taking a photo. I don’t think I’d care to see scanner submissions showing up regularly as normal entries, so my vote is no.

Yes, up to 4 are allowed for that one. Also, reposts are allowed in anniversary and a couple of other contests (although they’re supposed to be within the past year and I didn’t try to enforce that… yet). Hence the “meticulous” part – it was done on a contest-by-contest basis.
