…Which got me thinking – has anyone ever pulled a 3-way first?

The answer is no. As a matter of fact, there’s only ever been one two-way first, and that was U-Man for The Song Remains The Same.

Ties at first are pretty rare things altogether it turns out – only 15 contests have had more than one entry in first place, including U-Man’s solo.

Thanks everyone. I’m pretty surprised by this one; as I mentioned, I wasn’t even sure I’d have time to enter so my picks were pretty hurried. That’s also my first P&S win, off my first digital camera, a 4MP Canon Powershot G2.

You’ll notice that I left plenty of room for others between my win and my other entries, as, you know, it’s the gentlemanly thing to do.
/ Unlike some others around here – looking at you, U-Man, rav, and Silverstag, recent offenders anyway. 😛
// j/k of course. I’d pull a 3-way tie for first if I knew how and had really any inkling of what the voters were looking for. 😕

Scarlet R: cbtroy’s entry was previously used in the Black contest.

What’s that from, rav? The photojournalist played by Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now (my favorite movie) quotes the first few lines of that and I’ve always wondered. A lot of T.S. Eliot is used elsewhere in the movie, so I’d always assumed it was from him.

Ah, things I didn’t think of at 2 in the morning. 😳 Sorry about that.

Since the scraper was already setup to post my entries to fark, it was easy to modify it to post the report to another fark thread, but it’s not as simple to change it to email or post here instead. That may be something I can look at in the future, but I’d rather put my efforts toward the stats site for now.

So I’ve disabled the auto post report and it’ll just notify me and then I can notify you here.

So, uh, Els, while manually putting together the previous Scarlet R’s, I had an idea, and I think you might like it… 😉

My thought was that since what I was doing manually could easily be integrated into my stats scraper while it’s making thumbnails of all the entries, and as I previously mentioned I’ve already modified the stats scraper to be able to auto-post, why not combine the two features? And so I did.

The stats scraper now automatically checks for reposts and will autopost a Scarlet R Report to the Fark Farktography forum (link #7). All you’ve got to do now is watch that forum. The post will be under the username “StatsScraper” and will look something like this:

    Scarlet R Report

Momzilla59 previously posted this entry in the Dark And Forbidding contest.

There may be multiple entries in one report. The scraper scans every 15 minutes, so however many R’s there are during that time period will get reported together.

Enjoy! (And you can make my MM a double. :))

I’ll look for Four Roses the next time I’m restocking, orionid. I also like Knob Creek when I’m in a sippin’ mood.

Els, I can identify, except my incident was on a senior band trip in high school. I played baritone sax, so there’s plenty of space for contraband in the bell. After that trip, I couldn’t do bourbon or whisky for several years.

Thanks everyone, really glad you all like it. I should have a more-or-less “official” contest results page up within the next day or two, certainly by the end of this contest.

rav, thanks much for the paypal offer, but save your cash for your new camera body (I’ve gotta have content for the site, right?). When it’s all done and publically launched, I may put a paypal donate button on the front page and if you still feel the same way, you can donate then. I’m on GoDaddy’s “all you can eat” plan with multi-year prepayment and I use the same plan to host my other sites, too, so it works out to only about $10-11 a month, no big deal really.

Els, I won’t have a page for it yet, but I should be able to manually check for Scarlet R’s (using the same filename matching mechanism). I’ll post anything I find here.

I shot one new one for this week and plan to archive dive for the other two. However, I can’t tell if I used my other possibles in prior contests ’cause schnee spilled beer on the FSM.

I’m not complaining about schnee having a life. Really and truly. 🙂 But if we don’t have an FSM by go-time can we get some leniency for scarlet R’s?

OK, guys & gals, since FSM went down I’ve been spending all of my free time, a lot of my sleep time, and the time I’d normally put into the next contest (which may result in me having to skip this one) working on the new stats site.

It’s not ready yet (but watch for an announcement within the next day or so), but I’m far enough along that I was able to whip up something quick and dirty that may help here. It’s a page showing thumbnails of every entry for a given user with the contest date and theme. The thumbnails themselves are links to the entry in the Fark contest in case you need to view larger.

You can access it with this URL:

    http://www.bibliostats.com/farktography/user/myusername

where myusername is, of course, your Fark username.

For example, to see all of U-Man‘s entries, the link is http://www.bibliostats.com/farktography/user/u-man

It’s not ready for prime time nor optimized for volume and is subject to change at any time, so please don’t share it publically or otherwise link to it, but it should suffice for now.

I like to rib you Nikonites, but I’m a Canon user more through opportunity than choice. My oldest worked at Circuit City before they took the big dirt nap and Canon offered a pretty sweet deal on a lot of their catalogue to all of the employees in the camera dept to encourage them to buy Canon stuff and then recommend it, I’d presume. As I was wanting a dSLR about then, I took advantage of the offer and now I’ve got waaay too much invested in Canon product to ever think about switching. So, successful ploy on Canon’s part, I reckon.

That sucks, rav. I don’t have a Rebel, but if you can remember the conversation on here about replacement focusing grids, someone linked to a couple of sites that sell those and those sites have instructions with pictures for specific camera models. You may be able to find a suitable comparison shot there. I think it might have been sleeping that provided one of the links, so maybe start by looking at his posting history.

I find the smug pretentiousness of some jackass with a 5D and a $4k lens tell me how much better my shots would be if a just bought some good equipment. (Keep in mind this on the street and this person has never SEEN a photo of mine…actual event, at the dance parade this year!)

I’ve never run across anything like that. I think I’d probably be too stunned to be able to react immediately. What an asshole. What’d you say?

The only time a photo is universally bad, is when it is taken on a Nikon

    😈

    Amen, brother, preach it! 😆
