Participantorionid, I agree that the topaz’d version looks more “natural.” Because of that and the fact that you could likely get close to the same result in PS if you tweaked it until you found the just the right combination, I’d be OK with you using it.
clouddancer, I think I have my monitor brightness turned down (because I’ve had trouble seeing really low-lit things in photos that others have posted here), but almost all that I see is the light itself, a quite small bit of tree & post, and the rest is almost all black. Given that there are likely other voters out there with the same issue, it may not do well. As for whether it conforms to the rules or not, I can’t answer that one as I’m still a bit unsure myself, despite all of the explanations that have been given. Assuming I make this one, I’m counting on ennuipoet‘s promise of leniency. 😉

ParticipantYou don’t happen to have a link to that list, do you?
I didn’t… but I do now, just for you. 😉
The whole list is almost 4MB, so I’ve shortened it to the top 1000. You can download it here. And the number I think you’re looking for is #10 with 13.4% for Money Shots. In comparison, my best is #495 for “Me Love You Long Time.” 🙁 Which is kinda surprising at first glance, since I had 3 entries in the top ten for “Sparks, Arcs, & Other Flashy Things” and that one only came in at #743.
The trick for making the top of this list appears to be two-part: 1) Have 3 entries that do well; and 2) make that happen in a low-voter-turnout contest. The first contest in the list to have 1900 or better total votes is at #48 (Self Portraits, yeimi).
CauseISaidSo , thanks for the stats. I’ve been meaning to say that I can’t get the javascript vote ranking to work ever since my IE updated to “Version 9.0” . Am I the only one having this issue?
I use IE9 but I’ve got the script bookmarked, so I don’t have that problem. I just tried it by copying and pasting and found that the problem is that IE9 strips the leading “javascript:” from the pasted text. So, after pasting the string into the address bar, go back to the front of the string and enter “javascript:” before pressing Enter and it’ll work.
Alternatively, you can create a bookmark so you don’t have to copy & paste every time. Download this file, save it to your C:UsersyournameFavorites folder, and then rename it to “Voting Results Script.url”. It should then show up in your IE9 Favorites menu as “Voting Results Script”. Load the contest voting results page on Fark like normal and then choose this from your Favorites menu and tada – no more copying & pasting.
Anyone else who needs the shortcut is welcome to try this, but I don’t know if other browsers (non-IE) use the same file format. Worst case is that it won’t work and you can just go back and delete the file.
Edited to add: Something else I just thought of that non-IE users who want the bookmark may be able to do – If your browser has an “import bookmarks” function, you could follow the steps above and then ask it to import the IE bookmarks.

ParticipantI’ve edited my post here to show final contest results.
And congrats, rav! I’m guessing you’re of the firm belief now that that was 60 bucks well spent, eh? 🙂
And here’s another feather in your cap – your vote total represents 9.05% of the total votes cast in this contest, which places you at #72 on that list. You might be saying, “72, big deal,” but that’s #72 out of almost 24,000.
And if anyone’s curious about who’s #1 on that list, it probably wouldn’t take long to guess – it’s millera9 in the Barbie (and Ken) contest. Dude took almost 25% of the votes in that one.
Oh, and for those who’ve forgotten about it or any newcomers who missed it, you can see the place rankings on the voting page by using my voting results script as described in this post.

ParticipantDon’t have it in my dSLR, but I do in my P&S and that was one of the deciding factors for me. I’d like to have it in my dSLR and my next one definitely will.
If you’re like me and photography is a hobby and not a profession, then you’ll eventually find yourself in a situation that would be best captured on video instead of stills and having that option without carrying around a camcorder too is nice. I don’t consider its primary usage as a video camera, but it is convenient and they do take decent video (consider the lenses you’re shooting through).

ParticipantWow, what an awesome opportunity. Enjoy the experience, take lots of photos (like orionid said), and as you enter your xxth straight day of 100+ and start to wonder why you decided this would be a good idea, always remember – at least it’s a dry heat. 😉

ParticipantHey, how was the trip? Did you make it back with more or less the same count? Ya know, 10% is the maximum acceptable shrinkage in the camp guide industry. 😉

Participantrav, I agree with U-Man; personally, I like the memorabilia better, but I think the beer spill will get more votes.
U-Man, I think the bus will do well because as you imply, it’s unusual. Although having tried scanning my face a couple of times, I can certainly appreciate the effort and timing it took to get that other shot. 🙂

ParticipantDear my scanner…
Good grief, man, don’t leave us hanging! Does it work or not???
BTW, love the cave shots from that flickr stream. Always been a big fan of caves.

ParticipantThe decision process is going to wrack me hard.
Welcome to the club, rav. And I’ve still got one idea that I want to try tonight…

ParticipantI’d suspect the sudden interest is due to this: 2,500 firefighters struggle to contain Arizona blaze on CNN’s front page. Can’t explain why you’re at the top of the search list for the term, but that’s pretty cool.

ParticipantNow that I’ve spoiled everyone’s surprise entry, can I get an opinion on a couple of possibles for my 3rd entry?
Here’s my original selection. It’s a souvenir statuette from Chichen Itza that I just thought looked cool. It’s 2″ deep, so you can see my scanner has a decent DOF, which is surprising given that it’s several years old.
And here’s the alternate that I’m wavering on. It’s a 4800 dpi scan of the date stamp on a 151-year-old penny. I think it’s quite interesting to see the wear and tear at that detail level, but I don’t know if it has the visual appeal of the statue. Or are they both just meh?
BTW, I’m going with all static entries this week. I tried the moving thing and while it was fun and produced some interesting images, I wasn’t particularly thrilled with any of them.

ParticipantWell, well, well. I did this shot about two weeks ago. It was intended to be my sleeper. Now it’ll look like a copier. :[
Well now, aren’t we an original bunch?! 😆 “There are no new ideas. There are only new ways of making them felt.” – Audre Lorde
Looking forward to seeing your interpretation of it (with your “something else”) as well!

Participant*** Shakes fist in the air *** Zeeero! Are you my less lazy doppleganger? Weren’t you also the one who did the Fark bacon for vote whoring that I’d also considered but decided was too much effort?
That’s too funny. Great minds and all that, eh? Oh, and I’m looking forward to seeing it actually executed!
loki, I couldn’t tell from your response if you were actually looking for ideas, but I did have another one that would fit the capabilities of your scanner. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll PM it to you.
