ParticipantThough I’m not in this one, I thought y’all might like to see how it’s trending:

Looking good. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it surpass 3000 votes by contest end.

ParticipantWe’re all bedded down in the basement just in case…
Pshaw. 😉 That’s how you can tell a native Oklahoman – when the sirens go off, they’re on the back porch looking for the thing. Like I have been several times over the past couple of weeks.
Been a really active season here so far. Looked really hairy last night, but nothing came of it in the end (same can’t be said for the poor folks in El Reno, though).
Got some decent cloudscape shots at sunset last Sunday. Kinda takes the fun out of it, though, knowing that’s the same storm that went on to devastate Joplin. 🙁
Seriously, though, do whatever you’ve gotta do to feel and be safe.

ParticipantFarktographer, as a fellow liter, I’d be glad to do either or both for you.

Participantennui, if no TFer steps forward, I’d be glad to do it.
I think I’m going to sit this one out, personally. I don’t really have any cute or funny kitteh pix, at least none to compete with what I anticipate this crowd coming up with. I’ve got a cat, but he’s pretty asocial and not subject to cuteness.

ParticipantThanks, guys. I’m really just exercising the years of experience in my career, though. What y’all do everyday seems just as esoteric to me. 😉

ParticipantNo, not my voting stats! 😯 Youse guys really do have ways of making me talk, eh? I’m more than happy to share, I just didn’t want to bore anyone with technical talk if they weren’t interested.
It’s basically emulating a web browser. The way my stats scraper works is that at the contest start time, it polls the main page to look for a new contest so that it knows the link to the contest comments page. It does that by parsing the HTML sent from the web server and looking for specific attributes that indicate a farktography contest.
Once it knows the comments page link, it polls the comments and the voting results pages every 15 minutes. If you pull up the main page, the contest page, or the voting results page and choose View Source on your browser, you’ll see exactly what I’m parsing to figure out the links, who posted what, and how many votes were cast.
Embedded in the comments page HTML is the form that contains the comment posting section. So when I found out last week that I’d be inflight during this week’s contest, and faced with having to request a back-to-back OBO, I decided to add code to the parser so that I could provide it with the comments that I’d normally post myself and then when it finds that the contest has gone live, it pulls the comments page, fills in the appropriate fields, and then posts it back, just as if I’d done it myself from within a browser. It waits a minute and then repeats for the next entry until done.
I plan to eventually make this a feature on my stats site so that any registered user can setup an OBO on his/her own behalf. And I swear the site is still in development, I just severely underestimated my free time over the past few months. I’ve even got a domain for it: BiblioStats.com (meant to imply “statistics library”, from the Spanish biblioteca or French biblioth?que).

ParticipantYay! My first theme suggestion went live on my 1-year farktography anniversary.
I was actually 30,000 feet over somewhere likely in Iowa when the contest went live. How then did I post my entries? I modified my stats scraper to auto-post. No more OBOs for me! 🙂
I really was looking for more dramatic flames in my fire shot, but I set off the smoke alarm twice and was then instructed that that would have to be good enough.
My bees (one for each element) are here.

ParticipantI knew I had one other question. Would this be considered too much of a mix of water and air – http://www.flickr.com/photos/guine/5594214280/
Sorry for the delay, I’m out of town again and have limited internet access.
I’d say that’s too much water for air, but I’d be OK with it as water. I’m thinking we should apply the same logic for cloudscapes here: Is the photo substantially different if the element in question is removed? And add to that a second test: Is there more than one element where the first question holds true? If the answer to the first question is Yes and the second is No, then I think it’s probably OK.
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantI’d be inclined to say no on both of those, linguine, but I don’t feel strongly enough about it to not be overridden.
However, this one, cropped to eliminate most/all of the water, might pass for fire.

ParticipantFor those not on Facebook, last week we found out orionid is no longer needed in the Navy, essentially is getting laid off in June and our wedding is Saturday so we have that, then finding a job and figuring where we want to move to on the Navy’s dime.
Yeah it’s going to be IA, VA, or PA depending on jobs. CA is right out…
Don’t forget that Oklahoma is OK! (It says so right on our license plates. Except we don’t have any nuke plants – tried to build one in the 80’s but it was abandoned due to protests and rising costs).
There’s a plant in Russellville, AR. Don’t know if they’re hiring, but based on your & orionid‘s love of outdoors, that’d be a decent place. Beautiful country there.
And my condolences on the whole affair. Getting “phased out” and having to move sucks.

ParticipantSorry, I was learning how to start forest fires this weekend and not kill girl scouts in the process.
Did ya at least get some shots of the fire? 🙂
I’ve done the Scout leader thing, too, so I know how those weekends go. Generally fun but exhausting.

ParticipantThanks, Elsinore.
When you have a moment, would you mind working your OBO magic on the FSM? TIA.

Participantrav, pretty much what sleeping and chup said. To get the figures I used, I started with 200mm max zoom of the lens, multipled by 1.4 for the TE to get 280, and multipled by 1.6 to get 448, which I rounded up to 450mm. Crop factor doesn’t affect the speed of the lens (although the TE does). Think of it this way: If you take a picture of an object that fills the frame on your Rebel or my 30D and it takes 200mm of zoom to do so, to duplicate that photo on a full-frame sensor would require a zoom length of 320mm (200×1.6).
As to affecting distortion or CA, I don’t think it changes anything, but I really don’t know for sure.

ParticipantI think it depends on what kind of shots you want to take with the new lens that you can’t now. For example, you mentioned wildlife and sports. If those are more important than sweeping landscapes, the 70-300 might be your better option.
I’ve got a 10-22 f/3.5-4.5, a 24-70 f/2.8 (my primary walking around lens), and a 70-200 f/2.8. I use the 70-200 with a 1.4x tele-extender to shoot my son’s football games. With the extender that’s 280mm and with the crop factor it’s equivalent to about 450mm full-frame. And I find that more reach would be handy a lot of times.
Another consideration if sports is important – a lot of sports need really fast glass due to low lighting conditions and the faster shutter speed you want to use to capture the action. I don’t know Nikon’s lens catalogue, but if there’s a faster lens in that zoom range then maybe it’s better to hold off and either save up for that or just satisfy your lens craving for now with the wide angle.

ParticipantKestrana, I love that light pollution shot. All Night Long was only my 5th contest and I remember being awed by it then. It may be my favorite shot of yours.
