So these are obviously, my very first attempts. I went out to the pier near my apartment which is on the flight path for Newark and shot these.#1 is technically the best, but there aren’t many planes in it. #2, I must have picked up some movement though I was on a tripod, next time I will make sure I have the mirror locked up which I did not in this case. #3 Is actually a helicopter flying low over the river which made for an interesting idea but not so much of a result.
I definitely learned to way more underexpose than what I was doing. I was about two stops under, I think I should go for three. Also, should I include multiple dark frames or will one suffice?
#2 is the result I want but with a better skyline view and, of course, the lack of movement. Does the stacking software ghost like an HDR merge?
I love having a new project! Learning is fun!damental.
ETA: DOH! Of course, shoot a base without planes and then overlay the trails in Photoshop! That would clear up ground movement!

ParticipantThanks Chupa, I don’t plan on doing star trails because, well, you can barely see them in NYC, what I do have are hundreds of flights leaving three major airports all crossing over my skyline. Something like this

but over Manhattan and not as close to the airport.

ParticipantShe was just on FB not 1/2 hour ago, so maybe she’s got an “I Live In the Sticks” Interwebs outtage. They are just like my “I live in damn NYC what is my Interwebs out?” but without the crickets.

ParticipantGood, I am glad it’s not just me. And Kes, you are most likely right, “Hot Girl!” and, I hate to say this, but if the people in the photo were, er, darker complected, I imagine the reaction would be different.

ParticipantI suppose Nissan Skylines are out. I know of a guy who had one imported straight from Japan, with the steering wheel on the wrong side and everything.
He was unable to register it though.
It’s definitely man made, but I think it loses on the “building” side of the equation. BUT, if think you can make it work, I say go for it. I would’ve kiboshed staplermofo‘s staple city until I saw the end result.

ParticipantEvery time I say that phrase (and I say it with some regularity), the xylophone plays in my head too 😆
You know what’s weird? That song has been playing in my head since this theme was hoppered, but I could not remember whether it was a real song (which it obviously is) or just some strange melody in my head.
Admittedly, the 80’s is something of a alcohol fumed haze to me, but one would think I would remember if something is the real life or is it just fantasy…caught in a landslide, no escape from reality…

ParticipantOh rav, you got something against straight things?
I mean, I won’t be whipping out my ruler to check–but I would think straightish lines are needed to establish the vanishing point(s)?Must not giggle.

ParticipantBeen fretting over this one for a while and decided I had nothing and no time to shoot anything. Then I realized the gig I have booked to shoot tomorrow is perfect for this theme. I like it when that happens.

ParticipantI have zero interest in mirrorless cameras, I’ve been using a viewfind for 25 years and not looking into a square hole on back (or on top) of a camera is not something I can train myself to do. Using the screen on the back means moving the camera forward from my eye and changing how I frame a shot, I will stick with my DSLRs.
