ParticipantRav:
Sorry about your Dad, I dread the day that shoe drops for me.
The funny thing about our creative passions is we think they will be there for us when we are down, or need a diversion. So we pick up our cameras and head out, and our heads are still in our problems. We wind up frustrated and now have the worry we’ve “lost it” on top of the real problems we went out with. Trust me, I KNOW how it feels. I’ve spent the last year battling those metaphorical demons. The one piece of advice I can give, because I sure can’t help with the big one, is to only shoot when you feel like shooting. Don’t try to make this thing you love distract you from the problems, because it can’t do that. Read a book, watch a movie, play a video game, take a long walk without the camera, (or a long drive since you live in the vehicular world) do anything but try to force the photography to work. You might break it trying to squeeze that square peg in the round hole.
I am still battling work issues, have been for over a year now. I was desperate thinking “Photography will be great! It will fill the gaps” but it only made me hate photography. Once I stopped thinking about it like that, I didn’t hate it anymore.
I don’t know if this helps, but I assure you the passion that makes you a great photog isn’t dead, you haven’t lost the vision, it is only clouded by the big problems. When you feel it, it will be back and most likely better than before.

ParticipantSo what do you all think? would it be smarter to get the old beasty fixed or just spring for a new camera and get the old one fixed at some later date when I can take it to a camera shop instead of shipping it to a camera shop I have never dealt with before?
Were I in your spot, I would buy the new one. Sadly, we live in a throwaway world, where it cost more to get something fixed than buy it new. Though, I like the idea of keeping it aside for a rainy day.
I think about my Camera Closet where my Film Gear stays and how most of them are 30 years old, but the things we build today don’t last five.

ParticipantI am going to make you Astrophotographers weep:
All you need is to get to the ISS.

ParticipantAlso, isn’t it annoying when you come up with an idea for a theme, then discard it and then come up with a way to make it work after the theme has gone live? On Monday I was watching some Spy show, actually it was Alias, and they were defusing a bomb, complete with the “OMG which wire do I cut?!” scenes. I thought: “Ahah! That would be awesome.” Some modeling clay, a kitchen timer, some wires, cheap, easy and would probably do well in the voting. Shoot it with a pair of wire snippers, long exposure and shaking to convey the stress. Cool, right?
//Yeah, let me know how that works out for you;

…didn’t quite work out for me, though I thought at the time it would be awesome, too. 😕
//did better with the phuqin’ picture of the lazy cat.
OK, now I feel better about not doing it. 🙂

ParticipantI was just doing my Saturday morning voting in this weeks theme and I wanted to say that I think I should half credit…OK, 1/4 credit for Kestrana’s win (if it holds which I think it will) 😀 (Please note: in no way is that serious gripe, complaint or whine!)

I didn’t do it because I was actually worried that someone would see it and think it was real, then the cops are called because the world is farked up and some morons are out there making REAL ones putting them on the Internet.
This morning, the thought: “You could use Play Doh in the cans, it would give people the idea you wanted to convey without the worry and would be actually funny.”
Damnit so much. That would have worked. 🙄

ParticipantWatch your step, I got a little drool on the floor…Yup, the CA you are seeing is normal for a fish-eye, though well controlled in this case.
Now if you will excuse me, I am going to go back to drooling over the 5D.

ParticipantDo they have to be permanent buildings? Just before this posts, I’m making my annual trek to Black Rock City, NV, which has a beautiful skyline and many large buildings, but we’ll be burning them all down before Labor Day. Legal?
Permanence is not required, all they need to be is man made.
Welcome aboard!

ParticipantI still have a photograph to make, will post it tomorrow, if at all. Had to move to a new house last weekend and it’s been hell.
No landline, and no internet access in the short term.
/I’m dying here.
The shots you posted are farking powerful shots. I am profoundly jealous of them. Indeed, I am pretty much gnashing my teeth at most of the shots you post. Are you a Ringer? 🙂

ParticipantGreat fisheye shot. Usually I don’t, but here I like the people in the frame, for scale. Nice angle on the double-arch.
That’s funny, if I have the choice I will almost always include people in my landscapes. To me, it communicates a sharing of the moment, of the place, connecting the photographer with the viewer…or at least I hope it does.

ParticipantWell I did the firmware update.( was kinda afraid to mess with it before but I followed instructions and it went well despite my nervousness.) I have taken three pictures with it since and long exposures even and no error99. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Flashing the Firmware is a lot like reinstalling Windows, you do it as a last resort, it’s is painful and risky and when it works you don’t WHY it worked. That being said, hope that does it for you, or at least guys you a nice long time before it starts up again.

ParticipantMy Canon Rebel xs is giving me ERROR 99 codes. Which is apparently the catch all error message for any interaction between the camera body and lens’s. I am pretty sure it is not lens related because I am getting this with my 18-55 and with the 55-250. The camera is at least a year past any warranty I might have once enjoyed. Does any one know how expensive It would be to have it shipped to a camera service center and checked out / fixed?
Before you freak out, clean the gold contacts on the lens and the camera body with a little Isopropyl alcohol and a Q Tip. They can get gunged up fairly easily. If that doesn’t work and the camera is still powering up, you can try to flash the firmware with updated code, the instructions are on the Canon website. If all of that fails, then start looking at sending it in for repair. You are looking at least $100 for service, usually a clean lube and adjust, to $500 for major repairs. If it is major repairs it may be more economical to buy a new camera. 😥

ParticipantCISS said he was going to be out of town this week, but the site should have been setup to start scraping the new contest, but as with technology there’s always the possibility of something going wrong with the best of plans.
I had a chuckle when I noticed it wasn’t scraping and thought “Well of course, CISS is out of town,”

ParticipantHey, I was just over at G+ and read the novel of a post by ravnostic. (thanks for the shout-out btw) He mentioned the new sizes that are OK by fark standards. I knew that the max file size went up but I didn’t know the max px increased too.
I can’t find this info on fark. It’s hiding. Can anybody point it out?
I can’t find the original thread but the new pxl limits are 850×1500 (I think that is the long end someone will correct me if I am wrong.)
