I want to do Lighting shots so badly, but I lack the location. Sure, I could stand in the middle of a field with a big metal tripod, but somehow I am not willing to give that much to my art. (I live in a basement apartment, the only way I could shoot a bolt from the house is if it hit my courtyard. See Above.)

While I like most of the changes do we know if it would be possible to make the boobies post show up for everyone automatically?

Envotinate the Boobies, sure jackasses will vote for it, but it won’t matter.

Unfortunately, it would take a decent bit of effort, ennui. The biggest hurdles are that the scraper doesn’t actively look for new contests (I manually start it up every Wed night and hand-feed it the theme and description) and it’s only coded to support a single active contest at a time.

I thought I was going to have more free time for a while, but it turned out that the light at the end of the tunnel was the train carrying the next project. There are still features I want to add to the Farktography side of it (individual charts, contestant search, contest theme tags, for examples); I could delay those to try to get something up for the PS’ers, but it would still likely be fall before I can get to anything.

Keep me informed on your needs in that regard; if no one else steps up to the plate for PS contests, I’ll see what I can get started as I get some time.

Thank you Sir, will do! I was asking more out of interest than need, if you know what I mean.

FB right now Bibliostats tracks the participants for Farktography contests only, ennuipoet is interested to know when the database for Fark photoshop contests might be online.

Yup, that is what I was asking. It’s not a huge deal, just curious, (but not curious)

I like a couple of them, overall I wasn’t hugely impressed. The cropping was abysmal. All in all, I am going to run with the consensus and say they suck.

I checked out his web portfolio,
    http://www.czechphotogallery.cz/en/klamar2011.html
and Klamar isn’t a portrait photographer. He shoots documentary/photojournalism. There is a world of difference between the two. So, rather than just lump the hate on (which I have no problem doing) and I am going to say “Well, what did you expect?” take a studio photographer and put them in the field theirs shots will likely suck balls as well.

To do “serious” birding, one needs at least a 300mm on a APS-C, 400mm on FF, an extender doesn’t hurt either. Naturally, the five thousand plus dollars for such lenses tend make that a little…ah, daunting.

That seems to be true from what I have seen. Remember, teleconverters don’t work with many of Nikon’s lenses and you lose 1-2 stops when using one which causes you to lose auto focus on cheaper lenses. I’ve been looking at upgrading but it would be about $3k for a 70-200 f2.8 + teleconverter, which wouldn’t gain much as far as range goes. The Nikon 300 f4 isn’t insanely expensive but it lacks VR. Another option would be the Bigma, but that’s not cheap either. It would really get some range on my crop sensor though.

Alternatively I could just work on being more stealthy and getting closer, but in many cases that’s not possible.

For Fellow Canonites, the 2X EF is only five hundred, full autofocus and metering. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/732111-USA/Canon_4410B002_Extender_EF_2X_III.html

Not bad considering at all compared the 400mm

Yeah that makes sense. I just cant seem to get much closer than that around here and cropping enough to make the bird the main thing made the picture tiny. Basically I need a better zoom lens than the EFS 55-250 1:4 5.6 I currently have.

    Edited for punctuation.

All of my entries were shot on my 70-200 f4L, but I cheated: I went to shows and zoos where I could get up close and personal with the birds. I enjoy photographing birds, it’s challenging and the results can be stellar, but the whole endeavor is far out of my price range I couldn’t see it with the Hubble.

//getting my own printer is not an option, especially during cat shedding season, which seems to last from early January to around Christmas in these parts.

One question for the more experienced; I had one shot that was tack-sharp at full res, but appears somewhat blurred in the print. It’s a snowy egret shot. Any idea why that might be?

My Printer is encased in plastic sleeve like a grandmother’s couch for exactly that reason, the cats love it for a napping spot.

What was the megapixel vs enlargement ratio? If it was an 8×10 there shouldn’t be any image loss. Sometimes camera shake and unsharp areas show up in a print you never notice on a monitor, it is technology’s way of giving you the High Hard One when you didn’t ask for it.

The titles of this theme should be “Egrets, I Have A Few…” 🙂

Am I doing this right, or should I see if I can find a class on image processing?

    Thanks!!

So much depends on what program you are using to Post. (Personally, I cannot recommend Adobe Lightroom enough, it is powerful, non-destructive and not hideously expensive.) The Sat bump in the second image, IMHO was a bit much, a subtle increase in contrast would serve better to make the colors pop, the pink tones of the lighting take away from the overall effect. (Also you can play with your White Balance if you shot in RAW.

What you do in post is largely as process of personal preference and experimentation. Sink the money into Lightroom or a comparable program and just play with the settings until you see what you like, the original image is unchanged.

People with darkrooms are kind of like people who rebuild classic cars, but much, much, much cheaper.

Not really. And I do speak from experience.

Wait until I build my darkroom in the backseat of my Studebaker, then I’ll show you all! 😀

I wish I could, but it is the one way I can keep in touch with a whole slew of people I would never speak to otherwise.

    It’s almost like a phone was pre-2000.

I don’t know ennuipoet, if I knew people who would stay in touch with me via Facebook exclusively, probably I would not want/need to say in touch with them at all. But that’s just me. =)

No, honestly, that is exactly where I want them to contact me. We are talking about extended family members, old military buddies and other people I would like to have limited contact with but not engage in long talks via email and the phone. Also, these are people who barely know what Twitter is, never heard of G+ and would only email me FWD’s talking about Sekert Muslins.

I am not a Facebook cheerleader, but it serves a useful purpose for me. I wouldn’t PAY for it, I am damn careful about what info I provide and adblock FB viciously, but so long as it provides a useful service.

I don’t mind BEING the commodity. I do mind when I’m treated like a commodity.

Their latest “We don’t care about your e-mail preferences” debacle was the last straw.

They can go fuck themselves. Sideways. With a chainsaw.
