ParticipantThis IS the Jamesons talking now, but I needed today to remind me what the hell I am doing here! I worked too long and too hard to give up now! I scrimped, saved, worked extra jobs to buy my gear! Not a single bit of it bought on credit (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) but by patience and bargain hunting on the ebay! I will sell my collection of poetry, I will sell my guitars (anyone want a Yamaha six string and Twelve string, immaculately cared for, only played by a fumble fingered folkie?) but I am not going to let go the one thing I love! (after the cats, but let’s face it, no one is going to pay me for them 🙂 )

ParticipantAnd, maybe this is my post photo shoot high, or maybe the Jamesons and Murphy Stout (no Guinness in the deli), but when I moved up here I was a HELL of a lot worse off. Just fired from my job, no money, dropped of Georgetown, broke up with the woman I was sure I would marry, dead broke and living off the charity of my friends…and I fucking made it for seven years in this town with it trying to eat me alive! I may be beaten and bloody, but I was damn dead when I washed up in NYC! I can beat this!

ParticipantJust back from shooting a big Improv Everywhere event, in the middle of six thousand people with no pants on and I am one of the official photographers…seriously, how can I give that up? You know, housing court in NYC takes at LEAST six months to evict you, if I keep paying SOME of the rent…

ParticipantNBD: Moving is not really an option as it would take twice the money to do, that or abandon everything I own besides the cats and some clothes. Plus, I would have to move in with my parents, at a certain age that just isn’t an option.
The lawsuit probably won’t be worked out for another six months at the minimum and only then if there were a settlement. I couldn’t count on it for any kind of income.
No, in the end, I am most likely going to be forced to sell the gear and then go on some sort of short term govt assistance…I’ve been working for twenty five years so I figure I can get a little something in return, food stamps if nothing else.
Yugo, I landed a few jobs but nothing even close to making enough money, then went back to vet work which eats up all the time I could be doing photo work but still doesn’t make enough…a real Catch 22.
Thanks all, I appreciate the kind words and support!

ParticipantI wrote a piece yesterday about the death of Kodak, and why it is a symptom of a greater disease in the country.

ParticipantWell, can we at least all agree that the SEC sucks? 😆
What are you guys a buncha stock brokers, why all the hate on the Securities and Exchange Commission…sure they’re ineffectual but look at what they are up against!

ParticipantQuestion: What about photographs of police? Are those sufficient for bacon?
I think we should stick to actual pork, or Mr Bacon himself.
OK, but I should get extra special Internets for a pic of a cop eating bacon! 😛

ParticipantI’m ok with letting the voters sort out Mopsy and ennuipoet‘s entries.
Always appreciated, and to Elsinore as well for keeping me honest! 😀

ParticipantEnnuipoet: I’m not sure your 2012-01-04 08:02:26 PM is really a “landscape” per se, since it’s composed pretty much of a singular subject vs an expanse.
Technically true, I suppose, but I would argue it fits the intent of the theme. If I had taken a photo of just the handle of the door, or the door was part of a smaller model I would be inclined to say it doesn’t meet the theme. In this case the door against the flat white of the wall implies the emptiness, the lack of adornments, contextual surroudings placing it in a larger enviroment imply the emptiness goes on and on…thus desolation. It is in that grey area between landscape and, still life I guess. I will bow to the will of the crowd on this one, if you good people don’t think it meets the theme I won’t dispute it’s deletion.

ParticipantMight be because the military uses Nikon, and always has because they’ve already got the lenses (there was an article in a recent Pop Pho regarding their use.) Just a thought. NTTAWWT.
Yup, from what I understand, the gear was purchased by NASA and the astronaut learned on the gear. Though, I bet he was an enthusiast before he started on the project, if he isn’t he will be now.
Nikon can have the military, Canon has professional sports 😛

ParticipantI see many of you are saying we don’t like, but, we’ll get over it. Well done Farkers! 🙂

ParticipantYou will be shocked how much you can recover from a RAW file, shots you were forced to toss in jpeg because you shot fast and didn’t adjust exposure enough now become completely recoverable. When I am shooting street work I just Sunny 16 and shoot in RAW, so even if I stepped into the shade and shot from the hip without checking exposure, I still have a usable shot.
I highly encourage you to pick up Adobe Lightroom, which is both a catalog and a power editor. It runs around 200 for purchase and or…err…less if you don’t mind sacrificing your ethics.
You can shoot me an email/PM if your ethics are feeling flexible.

ParticipantWhat are we ruling on Hipstashitinstagrams? Are we considering them acceptable post processing or are we calling a spade and spade and saying they are photoshopped.
I mention this because there is an Hipstashitinstacrapogram in the thread.
