ParticipantI thought I forgot to enable voting on my second post and then noticed the “Best” “Funny” buttons above everybody’s pics. What’s up wit dat?
EVERY comment is voting enable, every thread is voting enable, you have to turn it off when you post.
I believe it is a bug not a feature.

ParticipantWe need a Headline Edit, the thread is still Season’s Greetings

ParticipantIf we don’t combine the vote totals, it’s possible that we’ll go the other way, and skew against current participants because the general populace votes with the Funny button.
In pro sports they acknowledge previous records came with 14, 15, 90, 125 game seasons, but breaking a record is still breaking a record. The previous record holder aren’t around to complain about losing their spot and if they were, they could start participating again and reclaim it.
This.
I doubt those who no longer participate are much concerned with their standings. Truth be told, I only count my standings for the calendar year, because, you know, why you bringing up old stuff?

ParticipantWouldn’t they still have to old code around that they could put back in place? I personally liked just having one thing to vote on and this whole system just seems silly for the contests.
I don’t claim to speak for Drew in any way, but as I understand it from various conversations held in the PSAEF changes in the coding have to be universal for cost and simplicity. So all Voting Enabled threads have the multiple vote options because it takes more time and money to set up different variables for different threads. (As I mentioned, I couldn’t code my way out of a paper bag so my understanding could be flawed) I suppose the simplest way to answer this would be to email Mike and ask, but we don’t have time for rational solutions! 😀
As to how to count the votes, I voted to count all best and weigh the funny as a best compromise. We could ask people to just vote best in the Boobies, but honestly people don’t read the Boobies now so adding more information to the Wall of Text probably won’t make a difference.

ParticipantThe way Fark handles voting is universal, for simplicities sake. I know next to nothing about coding but I can’t imagine having a seperate voting template for one small section of the site is viable.

ParticipantThe voting change has been bouncing around for about 2 years, ever since a Farker told Drew at a Fark party people wanted it. (Although I don’t recall taking a vote) The operating idea was that technical brilliance was being trounced by cheaply done cliches. The second voting button is supposed to allow the voter to recognized hard work and effort and still vote for the beer looter slapped on every god damn shop.
None of that, thankfully, applies in Farktography. In our threads the funny needs to be combined with the good to bring the votes. Could the scraper just tally all votes cast for an image and combine them into one number? So if you receive 9 votes for Funny and 11 for Best you receive 20 votes. It may inflate our voting totals but I suspect it will not much change the overall placement of an image in a theme.
I’m spitballing for ideas at the moment.

ParticipantI went a step further and eliminated any archive dive theme, the only entrants are shots I actually took specifically for this theme and did not use. I had a surprising number this year and looking back over the year’s voting stats, I probably should’ve used the B’s.

ParticipantI would love to work with period attire! And vintage cameras.
Imagine recreating a 40’s crime scene photo trench coats, Graflex cameras all done in grainy black and white! That would be a cool Farktography meet up shot!

ParticipantOh good… this one I’ve got ideas and stuff for… now I’ve just got longer to procrastinate on the sleeves.
I’m gonna shoot this one on film and then past the film canister to my monitor!
I am that hard core! 😛

ParticipantI am (tentatively) working with exploring the noir idea I submitted as a theme early this week, riffing off this post on my blog
http://freeversephotography.com/freeversephotoblog/?p=3168
shooting locations and environments that look as though they are right out of Film Noir set, maybe expanding to cover some of the darker aspects of the psyche. (I know, it sounds pretentious, but it isn’t really). I’ve been bouncing the idea round in my head for a year or so. I know several grimy alleys and run down buildings in very posh areas. I really want to photograph a model standing in the pool of light in the middle of alley, in period attire. It may be reaching higher than my grasp but I am working on it.

ParticipantRather than honing technical skills (though this will include some of that) I envision this a lesson in creating a vision for cohesive project, shooting thematically for a gallery show. Not that it is intended to for a gallery show, but it COULD be. I want to follow a plan rather than shooting randomly. And models, I definitely want models! 😛

ParticipantI must admit, this one is going to be a poser for me. I sold off ALL of my albums, tapes and CD years ago, everything is digital now. Somehow, the album cover art on my ipod just won’t do for this theme. I suppose I will hit the second hand album store here in the City, but then what to do with the album once I’ve shot? I’ve too much crap piled around my apartment as it is.
I will definitely have to keep an eye on the trash bins, you would be surprised what turns up on the curb in Manhattan.

Sorry for the delay. I had some issues today that distracted me from the contest.
Not a worry, real life tends to do that.
