ParticipantCrap! Elsinore, can you delete my OBO entry for Yugoboy, which is clearly NOT for this weeks contest! That is what happens when you drink!

ParticipantI just wanted to say that I am not the picky sort of person who quibbles over fine points of a definition. I based my reply on some particularly snarky Flickr comments sparking a bokeh debate. I didn’t follow them to the end to see the official call. I’d always more or less assumed that bokeh is, as sleeping said, a technical property of the lens not the photograph. I know my EFL 70-200mm has kick ass bokeh, which is enough for me.
That being said, for those who need such thing, long teles are a great way to achieve the rich, smooth background blur if you don’t have any primes. The long focal length gives you smooth back grounds at higher f-stops than the shorter lenses.

Participantgeom: The truly picky would say that bokeh is the out of focus points of light in the photo, not just the soft background blur of shallow depth of field.
So this photo:http://www.flickr.com/photos/blmiers2/5066164844/ with it’s convenient note describing the bokeh is a good example of the purists definition.
This photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ennuipoet/5596139152/ has a nice soft background blur due to the shallow depth of field I used, but no strong distinct points of light. The purist would not use this to demonstrate bokeh.
This is, however, Farktography, not a Flickr forum 😀 I would think the pic you posted is fine for this contest. Anything with a strong in focus object and soft out of focus background should be fine for this contest.
Of course, I did not submit this one, so my word is not final.

ParticipantI hope so. There are two professional leagues as well as NCAA Sanctioning.
I did not know that! Excellent, my options just exponentially multiplied!

ParticipantI’m trying to see if I’ve got anything worth asking ennuipoet to OBO for me.
I wonder… due to their lack of being “portals” but they are windows… are stained glass windows in or out?
I’m not sure if I’d use one anyway, but I’ve been going into every open church I come across… got a few pics so far.
The descriptions specifically mentions windows, I would think you are good to go.

ParticipantPaintballing could be considered a “sport” could it not? Not kids playing paintball, but teams of adults competing against one another.

ParticipantShoot.
I’ve been adding a focus on doorways and stuff the last few weeks, and it only today occurs to me that I won’t be able to post any of ’em as I’ll be high over the Atlantic when the contest goes live, and we’re leaving the ‘puters at home for safety, security and mental health’s sake so even posting late isn’t an option…
Oh well… I’ll just have to save ’em for Portal 2 in 2014, I guess…
If you want I am sure we could work up an On Behalf Of post for you, I’d be happy to do it if you send me the links to the photos.

ParticipantI agree the Photoshop frame WAY to much, but also agree not to nix it on this instance. I use outer borders but limit their size to under 5% of the pixels, which I think it a pretty good guideline. It gives a photo the impression of a print without detracting from the content or, as in this case, adding to the content.

ParticipantSee Canon users aren’t just the debbil, they’re also hipsters.
Hey, I don’t deface my chucks by drawing on them in pen.
/wtf, they’re carrying Holgas at Urban Outfitters now? SRSLY?!?!
//shoot me now.Oh yes, have been for a couple of years. I was in UO with an ex-girlfriend (OK, -1 for going in a UO +11ty for dating a girl young enough to shop at UO) a few year ago and they had Holga’s for sale. At the time, I wasn’t shooting but even then I realized they were a lot of money of P.O.S. camera.

ParticipantQuestion for the experts (and maybe the answers will help zincprincess:
My Slik tripod has a hook at the bottom of the center post, presumably to hang heavy stuff from or to bungee it to the ground. Does this provide enough stability in most circumstances?
I mean, no tripod’s going to help in a hurricane or earthquake, but in moderate winds, or on a sandy beach would that be a reasonable solution for most people? My tripod’s a nice lightweight aluminum, has a handle and is not a tremendous problem to transport.
That depends on your terrain and what you’re shooting and shooting with. For most camera a light weight tripod given the extra weight on the hook improves your stability. If you are shooting on rough ground, high wind or long lens there is no substitute for a heavy duty pod. Everything about tripods are a trade off and weight is a huge issue for most people. Me, I’m a big dude and a can lug a lot of weight for a long march, so I am willing to make that trade off. If I were going deep country I would probably make a choice for a lighter pod but for most work I am willing to bear the weight.

The Set on FlickrI, too, forget to include the people I am with when shooting! Strangers, oh, I take their pics, my friends…I know what they look like! 😀

ParticipantAlso, and especially if you are shooting in camera jpeg on long exposures, there is a setting called “long exposure noise reduction” in the menu. You should turn that on prior to doing any shot over 1-2 seconds. If you are shooting RAW it doesn’t matter so much, but the in camera processing of a jpeg gets noisy without LENR turned on.

ParticipantWhile I’ve only worn skirts for Halloween parties…the less said the better…I’ve worn many a kilt. They are terribly comfortable, particularly on hot, muggy days! The gentle breeze on the down below is very comforting!
