Participantbesides, it’s a Canon. We would have had to sacrifice it to the Nikon gods for your sins…

ParticipantRandom question – have you tried recharging outright replacing the battery? On my trip to Taiwan, I couldn’t get my mirror to lock up and I had a minor freakout until I found out I just needed to swap batteries to get it working again; not sure if it’d be similar since you aren’t even able to shoot right now, but a change of batteries and a lot of sacrificial offerings might give you something?

ParticipantI like to rib you Nikonites, but I’m a Canon user more through opportunity than choice. My oldest worked at Circuit City before they took the big dirt nap and Canon offered a pretty sweet deal on a lot of their catalogue to all of the employees in the camera dept to encourage them to buy Canon stuff and then recommend it, I’d presume. As I was wanting a dSLR about then, I took advantage of the offer and now I’ve got waaay too much invested in Canon product to ever think about switching. So, successful ploy on Canon’s part, I reckon.
This happens a lot on all sides, from the people I’ve talked to. They might want to switch brands, but once you have so much invested in glass, it’s not worth it.

ParticipantThe only time a photo is universally bad, is when it is taken on a Nikon
😈
Amen, brother, preach it! 😆

ParticipantI haven’t touched a film camera in over a decade, when I was in high school. I’m scared of the quality of photos I’ll be able to take now that I’m so digital, hah. As far as lomo stuff goes, I actually like the look of a lot of their images. They can tend to be too hipster-smug about cheap cameras, but put the camera in the right hands and you have some pretty spectacular images.

ParticipantI’d also love to have a go at this one, once you’re done with it SilverStag. My gf just got a couple film cameras and a lot of film to play with, but she’s hoarding it all for herself for now, so I’d love to give a Holga a try 😆

ParticipantThanks, CauseISaidSo! I’ll PM you the html in a bit.

ParticipantCan I get an OBO for this contest? And also for the Scanner as Camera contest, if possible? I’ll be in Taiwan for 2 and a half weeks, and I didn’t have internet last time, so I’d expect the same this time 😮

Participanturban is the code word for ghetto. you will have to travel into the most ghetto area you can reach in a 4 hour drive. anything else doesn’t count. and please be safe.
🙂
Please, PLEASE don’t make me go back to Compton. I’ve driven through there before after taking a wrong turn.
/A very, very wrong turn…
i used to run parts in the LA area. compton was never a problem. of course that was ’64. and before the watts riots of ’65.
csb time
in early ’66 i met a guy who lived in compton. arranged to come see him one night. he lived above a neighborhood bar and when i walked in there and ask for him there was a long awkward silence before someone offered to check and see if he were home. he was of course and happy to see me. he, my girlfriend and i went to a nearby nightclub to see his wife. she worked there. white people present = three. me, my girlfriend and the club owner, who had every stereotypical characteristic of the Jew owner. until that night i had never been disliked for nothing more than my skin color. nor had i heard disparaging comments based on nothing more than that. it was an interesting evening.
/csbYeah…a lot of underlying hate there. I got lots of stares, and a beer can thrown at my car just for driving through. And this was just off the highway exit – I didn’t even go a full block down the street 😯

ParticipantDoes your troop have the 10% loss rule ours did? The rule was, if you lose fewer than 10% of the kids on an outing, it was okay to pack up and go home.
/Yes, we were rambunctious little devils that loved running off into the woods on our own to camp under a self-made fort instead of a tent. I’m actually surprised none of us ever got diseased or killed out there

ParticipantThanks for the tips, everyone. Very much appreciated. I’m waiting for the guy to get back to be, but should other questions arise I’m sure I’ll be here with more questions 😆 I’m also looking at being a secondary photographer for a wedding in September – that’ll be my first, so it’d be interesting, too.

ParticipantHaha. Don’t be too hard on yourself – I can’t keep geographic memory right from a month ago. I’m hoping for some good potential shots when I go to Taiwan in a couple weeks, but if not I could always take a drive up to the Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear area – it’s close to my hometown.

ParticipantThanks for the tips, olavf – I don’t know why, but the first price that even popped in my head was $75. Random. I hadn’t thought of it before, but it is a good idea to have the prints go through me – I was just going to do something like upload to mpix and let them print as they felt.
As far as cheapening the profession, the very first thing I suggested to him was to go to a photographer my brother uses for my niece’s portraits – her photographs are fantastic, and I really admire her work. It’s the sort of portraiture I’d like to take eventually. Anyways, he didn’t seem too interested. I think he’s looking for a cheaper price tag. You get what you pay for, though.

ParticipantNowheresville. *Shudder.* I avoid that area if I can, haha – but for me, they just look more like hills than mountains. When I think of mountains, I think Everest or Mammoth, something along the Sierra Nevadas. I don’t count much of what’s in SoCal as mountains.
