ParticipantSweet.

ParticipantYeah, I think it’s going to be a relatively light post-processing theme since there’s no RAW images to work with. I’m honestly not expecting much, and I feel having poor-quality images will actually add some integrity to the scans. A little grainy, a little contrasty? I’ll just work with it…see what i come up with.
/Sorry to hear the news, Orionid. That sucks.

ParticipantWait, orionid…are you trying to say that someone like Michelangelo doesn’t have enough street cred for you? 😆
I know MOCA in Los Angeles is having a street art exhibit right now, and I was thinking about driving up there to get some shots. Then I told myself…eh, it just doesn’t feel right if I don’t find the art on the real, actual street. I’m still going to make a trip to the museum, but the photos I use in the contest will probably be from me wandering around locally.
Oh, and Yugoboy – you could always make your *own* street art, then take a photo of it

ParticipantYou can also think out of the box. Any sort of representation of mountain, volcanos, waterfalls would work too from neon signs to public art.
This. Very much this. San Diego is far from any mountains, waterfalls, or volcanoes.

ParticipantI would say plants *in* earth yes. But there’s got to be some kind of soil, rock, etc involved IMO.
Feeling this. It’ll probably end up being decided by the voters, but I feel dirt/sand/rocks are earth, but trees just don’t cut it unless you’re showing earth incorporated with them.
Personal preference is that photos like these are good “earth” shots:

ParticipantMy first idea was to go with classical shots that would fit as a 4-piece collage. I still might do that eventually, but I decided I wanted to have a little fun with a couple of the ideas, so that got thrown out the window.

ParticipantI thought duct tape was always applicable in situations like this 😆

ParticipantI’m having trouble with the water one. I have one idea that I know will probably get a lot of votes, but another idea that I personally think I’d prefer because it’s more artsy. I don’t think I have time for both. Oh, what to do…what to do…
olavf you’re not going to be able to see that unless you’ve got some open flames nearby – and then you’re just mixing elements 🙄

ParticipantSounds about the same as where my kit collection is going. With the D7000 i have the 18-105mm kit lens (great lens, btw), the manual 50mm f/1.4, and the next one I have my eye set on is the tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro – great minds thing alike 😆
I’m not as experienced when it comes to lenses as some of these other people, but your kit 18-105 is going to be able to go down to f/3.5, so the Tokina is only going to really be novel for very wide-angle shots from 12-17mm. The 70-300mm, on the other hand, would bring the 106-300mm focal range into your grasp. Personally, I’d go for that one. I’m seeing myself in a zoo or something, and with a 300mm you’d be able to get up-close with the animals without actually being up close. Seems to me (again, the more inexperienced person) that with the 12mm, all you’d have to do to accomplish the same picture is set your kit to 18mm and take a couple steps back.

ParticipantDitto, I’m interested in seeing where this goes. Do you have any sample shots you’ve taken with it yet? I’m wondering if you can get the halo effect out of a couple pie tins.
Farktographer
ParticipantEh…if it was me, personally, I wouldn’t care. If you’d rather he not use your photo though, shoot him an e-mail and ask him to take it down.

ParticipantWow, I’m browsing some of the photos right now and I must say I’m really impressed with this contest. I knew it’d be full of great shots, but this is really the cream of the crop. I have a feeling I’ll end up voting for pretty much all of them! Great job, everyone.

ParticipantPlus, I got to use some shots that I really like that haven’t been usable in a theme.
^^This for me. Three new shots I like, but I figure I won’t be able to use for a while, at least looking at the current hopper.

ParticipantWow, I don’t know if I could ever do what Bruce Gilden is doing – just because I’d probably be initially pissed if someone did the same to me (the video of him working was linked on the article, but here it is again http://erickimphotography.com/blog/2011/01/bruce-gildens-in-your-face-street-photography/ ). I do love this article though – so many great tips. I actually think having some drinks and realizing you won’t die are key. Then again, I always shoot my best after having some drinks 😆
Great article. I’ll probably need that confidence if the stranger portrait or triptych themes get hoppered.

ParticipantMy take on it is any photo either captured or submitted in the previous year is fair-game. So if you took a shot 7 months ago, submitted it 4 months ago, and want to re-edit it before submitting it to this contest, that’d be fine. On the other hand, if you took a shot 13 months ago, submitted it 4 months ago as an archive-dive, then the re-submittal of the *edited* version (the one from 4 months ago) is acceptable, but re-editing the 13-month old version would not be.
I might have just confused myself…. Anyways, from the wording of your question, millera, since you shot it within the last year, I’d assume you’d be allowed to re-edit before submitting.
