How about the barrel rolls the hummingbird does when the bee comes around? This is a farking awesome video, thanks!

I caught that on the first pass. That’s the definition of agility, right there. Watch the stability of that bird’s head while the body spins and the wings compensate. Amazing.

It’s not THAT impressive. When I see bees, I react the same way. Only I’m usually screaming a high-pitched “GET IT OFF OF ME!” and it’s more of a rolling on the ground than “barrel-roll,” but still.

I wish they had these charts for my area. Then again, I haven’t seen a star in the sky since I got here – plenty of light pollution in this city. All I’ve gotten a look at are the moon and the periodic planets.

100% CGI. I’ve learned to be cynical, and that was just TOO freaking amazing!

I’m not sure what you want close to what, but there are lenses that can focus on the dirt on their own front element.

Yeah, my lens was pressed up against the glass with that hair taped to it, so it’s *maybe* a millimeter away, but I could get closer with my tubes. As far as magnifying it, I’m just wondering if there’s a way to get it larger other than cropping.

Not planning on using this shot, but seeing if this is something that people would consider Noir-esque. My girlfriend felt it was scary with the lighting, but it doesn’t strike me as especially “noir.”

Pretty interesting idea, MUCH more effective than the banging on the glass.

From the article, “At the end of the day, the photograph is what should matter and how it was captured shouldn?t.” I agree with this – the problem I see (at least from my facebook friends’ postings using their camera phones) are that their pictures suck, but they try to make them ultra-trendy and hipster by using all sorts of filters and processing on their phone. “Hmmm…this picture of a chair is boring. I know, I’ll use a retro filter and then put a fake film frame on it so it looks cool!” I dislike those photos as much as any heavily-processed image out there using tons of photoshop.

Even then, I can say that I like some images that are heavily shopped or have their iphone filters, but at that point I no longer consider it a “photo.” It’s art, sure, but it’s not a real photograph anymore.

Also going to chime in on the ultra-wides. I picked up a 10-20 mm Sigma just a few weeks ago; haven’t had a chance to give it much testing, but just uploaded some SOOC shots to share so you can check out quality and whatnot. If there are blurry spots on the lens, keep in mind it was snowing and my cloth was doing nothing to wick away moisture from off the lens 😉

I feel you can see a little stretching when you get to the corners of the wide open shots, but I’m not sure that can be prevented without going much higher in price range; from what I was reading with reviews and whatnot, this seemed the best deal I could find (got it used off Amazon). Same with the chromatic aberration – it’s seen in the very edge of the corners, and even then it’s pretty slight (look at the original size), but the center of the image is nice and sharp.

Man, I knew I wouldn’t do well this week–life got in the way of my getting new shots–but I hadn’t a clue how well I’d not do well!

Such is life. Some of the work this week is absolutely stunning; I’ll just be a fly on the wall, over there –>

It’s okay, I’m not feeling the love on this one, either. What I thought was my best photo is dragging its feet the most of my entries.

I hate to be the complainer but SageC 2012-02-16 01:00:53 AM thinks Dodger Stadium – April 13th, 2010 is a place of worship. I wish people would read the first post before posting.

This post is funnier when combined with your avatar.

LOL it’s pretty much how I felt when I saw that entry too.

lol yeah I pulled that one right before I went to bed. Probably about the time you posted in-thread. Also, given he stated “sports venues do count”, I’m pretty sure he did read the Boobies, but was being contrary about it.

People are really interpreting this one broadly. One quick view at 6 new entries: one was a toilet, one was the great outdoors.

    /facepalm

What-the-dill-i-o? One of the pics I wanted to upload was initially 180k, and I got the Fark warning about maximum size being 256k. Argh, I increased compression to get it down to 160k. 🙁 Is it Fark lying to me or is Flickr increasing file sizes?

So many good choices for me to pick from, and lots of good shots from everybody. I think I may have a lock on “funniest” this week w/ the Precious Moments Chapel. Here’s hoping.

Yes and no; flickr will increase image size, but I’ve never heard of it tacking on an extra 70MB. The way to avoid image size increase is to get one of their paid accounts, and then upload the “original” size image (so you’re decreasing it to the exact dimensions you want before you upload).

/edit to add: CISS, your photos aren’t showing up for me right now. Might want to double-check your site.

One more B. Just glanced at my London photos and realised I forgot to include a photo I originally wanted to submit to this theme; oh well, too late now.

Orionid – regarding your 3rd B, you never mentioned your vacation to Minas Tirith.

Lots of fantastic photos from all over the world. I’ve got the camera, now I need to get about that “travel” bit of the equation.

2 of mine we taken within 10 miles of my house, one is less than 1 mile.

    For me, Texas is exotic….

Yeah, but you got some awesome shots near your house, so it’s fine. The first one with super-saturated blue sky and low-perspective of the church is amazing. If I tried that at my hometown…well, it’d be pretty damn boring.

Heh, decided to do it. I’m feeling a distinct lack of sleep, so I’m just going to throw it up on the boards and pass out. Els – if it’s going too far, feel free to remove my science post 😛
