ParticipantThanks. I tried to balance it out with some temples in TW, some kerks in Amsterdam, churches in UK (lord knows I see enough of those things), but Amsterdam was just way too photogenic. Really loved my visit to that city.

ParticipantLooking at the shots, I’m pretty stunned. However, it’s feeling too religious in that thread. Part of me wants to take a picture of a science book in front of an athiest center (do they make those?) just to balance things out a bit.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilpadrino03/6545837051/I particularly wanted to share the first one, because it has so much history in it, but I don’t think the fark voters are going to be voting for history, and the place just doesn’t look that pretty, so…dumped it into a B. The third one was going to be an entry for a while, but then I decided the church didn’t seem to be the main subject, so i scrapped that one too.

ParticipantObligatory H!P example.
Watching the whole thing, they actually make some tips on reflection and angle and whatnot that I guess the inexperienced users wouldn’t notice. It also made me really want to watch Naruto again, for some reason. I forgot all my college Japanese lessons >.<
I’m sure there are lots of tips they could teach people, but I hate that it’s specifically for iphone. If you want to teach basic photography, it should be the same tips for iphone as for point-and-shoots; difference is the iphone comes with all those apps that make things look “retro” or “omg look i shot on 120 film on my iphone you can totally tell by this black outline with lining” That sort of fake crap just pisses me off.
…that rant made me feel like an old man. Get off my [camera] lawn.

ParticipantSeems like from discussion this would be kosher, but I’m double-checking. I’m not planning on submitting this one in particular, but clearing it up for other ideas:

Line of Lanterns by Farktographer1, on FlickrJust not sure because it’s not absolutely blatant that this is a temple.

ParticipantWoohoo! After scouring Manchester for a place that does proper film development, I finally came across a camera store that, while like the others here ship out film for development with high price tags and no customisation available, had some friendlier staff. One guy pulled me aside, said that there’s a guy not too far from me that does his own in-store developing and is game for x-processing, 120, slide, whatever. He’s on vacation right now, but I’m hoping this means I *finally* can get some shots developed and scanned in time for this contest 😀

ParticipantThe whole purpose of “Best/Funny” really comes down to the Farktography and Photoshop contests (sure, there’s the once-in-a-blue-moon Caption or Audio, but for all intents and purposes it seems these are the 2 main camps). If these two camps are really unhappy with the way the voting is, why wouldn’t they change it back? We already know that they have different types of commenting available (Smart/Funny vs. Best/Funny) so what is the harm in granting us our original and keeping the other threads the same (retaining Smart/Funny and giving us back Vote/No Vote)?
My 2 cents. Just doesn’t seem that hard, and it’d make the people who actually participate happier.

ParticipantI’m Presbyterian but I really don’t get out of bed on Sunday anymore so can I photo the bed and tell people that’s where I pray from?
Don’t tell a dirty joke…don’t tell a dirty joke….

Participant*Note to self to post a new (relatively cheap) lighting setup I bought
I’ll come back here when I get home and get some photos uploaded. Basically I bought a manfrotto umbrella adapter so I could use my tripod as a light stand and a cheap umbrella – it is the lighting I used for my AvO submissions this week (the backdrop/ground was just my bed).

ParticipantAm I the only one that feels like this theme should have garnered more votes than it did? The top contenders seem to be doing about the same as you would expect, but there’s a drastic fall-off after that – or moreso than what I’m used to. Am I just imagining that?
Example: right now, U-man’s “coexist” is at 45 votes; at 10 votes, I have an entry that’s still running in the top 20. Last week’s 1st place (U-man) grabbed 36 votes, but to make it into the top 20 you still needed 20 votes. Seems like a much more gentle slope….
Given, there are fewer entries this week (which also surprised me), but it still seems like a steeper drop than usual. Any thoughts on this? Could be because I’m only looking at “Best” instead of “Funny” votes. This could be one of those that really mucked the waters with the new voting system.

ParticipantI think I’d allow it just for the sheer, “you did WHAT?!” I think the rules are more there to prevent people going extreme with photoshop or digital editing; manual editing like this are so out-there that I can’t think they’d fall under the same rules.

ParticipantMy split tone B&W’s thank you all for your help. Been meaning to inquire if such things were kosher in Farktopgrahy, as long as they aren’t neon green and vivid fuchsia? – this one also has a fairly significant vignette added which I’m under the assumption isn’t really kosher.
My personal opinion is that it’s bending the rules too far (both the vignette and splitting tones); makes for a pretty cool image, though.
