i had b-side attempts, but not considerations. i should have left myself a lot more time for this one. the combination of ‘ugly’ and yet still photogenic was a hard one to find on the fly. 😛 that stuff is everywhere, but i just wasn’t keeping my eyes out soon enough. my bad.

i know we just had lunacy, but is there anything about this contest that rules out moon shots? now that i have a DSLR i can take pix of the actual moon (as opposed to my toy moon entries in lunacy lol) and it’s in the daytime sky just just now to make things a little easier for me … and also different from many other submissions, most likely.

that’s been the bane of my week, i tell you whut. i keep finding ugly things — even things that have made me say ‘that’s disgusting, i’ve got to take a picture of that!’ — but when i get the pix home they just aren’t particularly interesting. d’oh!

It really just depends on what subjects are important to you. It sounds like for most of your subjects, 50mm will be fine. And some bugs won’t have issues. It’s the more skittish ones like dragon flies and some butterflies that you’d want some distance on.

what kinds of subjects would a 100mm be better for?

i’m really used to getting in super close with my point and shoot and while i know i have to make a lot of adjustments going to the DSLR i feel like the distance i’d have to get for the longer lenses would throw me for a loop.

soosh, orionid, elsinor any thoughts on should i man up and just learn to be further back for a higher quality lens or go for something i’m going to be a bit more comfortable with right off the bat?

as olavf and i have chatted offline here we guess we want to know what, then, does constitute a true macro lens and how do we prioritize features?

I have one that I really did and do think should have done better. It was in the “Tricky” theme. I plan to give a description of how I took the photo. Maybe that was the problem before, as I just put a title under the pic. That difference should be okay……right?

I think for the contest you could try, but it seems like voters don’t like to read. It seems like it isn’t that they hate text, but if the text is essential to understanding the picture, then it fails.

Unless you have a really good story that drastically changes the meaning of the picture for everyone.

i quite disagree – i feel like voters respond well to a little context, and i know i personally do.

but maybe my pictures are just weak. 😛

wow! my third best contest. it’s wonderful to get some agreement for how much i love my entries. i often feel like i have at least a half-way decent entry but the photograph isn’t one that will end up on my favorites page, but here i have candidates for both and at least one is rocking the vote. 😉 this was a fun contest and so pleasant to look at the entries.

there are a lot of beautiful pictures posted. and i’ll tell y’all… i really love the pictures i entered. even if they tank in the contest, they are going up on my page of favorites when we get our gallery repaired. so neener neener to anyone who doesn’t vote for them, cuz *I* love them! heeheehee
