Oh, you thought the VLT was funny? There’s a few proposals out there for really big telescopes going by the names of ELT (Extremely Large Telescope), and the OWL (OverWhelmingly Large telescope). Sounds like a joke, I know, but they’re serious. I wonder if we could call a telescope FARK. Farking Awesome Reflector, better than Keck.

Ravnostic – Olav and I routinely dismiss entry candidates because they might be too subtle for voters. From our experience, voters don’t look closely at pictures. A few well chosen words can sometimes encourage the voters to take a longer/closer look*, but it’s a risk. Of course, sometimes we will submit something on the subtle side because we just really love the picture… which makes it slightly more painful — if not surprising — when they tank.

*For instance, I think my sunset clouds from last week’s contest wouldn’t have done nearly so well** if I hadn’t pointed out the resemblance to Falcor.

Since I only needed to wear the white make-up for the duration of a photo-shoot — which took place in a freezing garage, so no worries about sweat lol — I was able to use water-based paint, which came off pretty easily. The dude at the costume shop was VERY helpful. I think overall, the paint was easier than the flour. 😉
