I’m glad this got moved over here because I didn’t want to stir up more controversy but I’m in agreement with the designer of the photograph is the photographer, even if for some reason they didn’t push the button. I was going to make an analogy that the writer of the play is still credited with the play even years after dozens of production houses have taken the material and run with it but ennuipoet’s analogy to make the same point was much more eloquent.

In “The Song Remains the Same” I used a picture of myself holding a hand of cards with the ace exposed. Orionid actually pressed the button on that (we can’t actually remember why but there was some technical reason that was making it difficult for me to do it and we couldn’t find the remote trigger) but it was my idea and I set up and executed everything. At the same time, we try very hard not to break Farktography rules and I don’t think something like that should become commonplace.

I think the litmus test for yourself is “Could someone else take credit for making this photograph?” Whatever the reason, if the answer is yes, don’t use it. Sometimes another human is just another piece of equipment but they shouldn’t cross the line into the development/creative/directive process.

Rav – I use photomatix pro to composite the images. Unfortunately it’s more complicated than just making them in Photoshop. You can also use qtfspui (hopefully I spelled that right), I think that’s how chupathingie does his HDR. There’s also a less complicated version, Photomatix Lite you can download a free trial of. It works the same as the program, just adds a watermark to the image. It’s inexpensive, I had purchased it on my own before I met orionid.

There should be a bracketing option in your main menu to turn on bracketing at every stop between 0.3 and 2.0. I just turn that on, click click click, turn it off. (just dont forget the off part or the rest of your pictures will require a lot of extra processing…)

No idea how many total photos I’ve taken in just over a year of having this camera but I too am finding as time passes I take less and less; partly because I can now get the shot I want the first or second time when I’m out and about. As to how often we go shooting, we take cameras whenever we “go anywhere”, which is a lot and a lot of the places we go because we want to shoot. The most I shot was about 1800 pictures in the trip from Washington to Connecticut. Las Vegas was about 950, Boston was about 600, day trip in Washington D.C. was about 250 and last trip to the local state park was less than 100.

You have to love the juxtaposition of Chippendale’s Bunny Dancer vs. innocent childling

Thanks. Obviously in summer last year I didn’t know what I was doing with HDR so this year I should be able to make new ones more in line with the others plus I didn’t take HDR exposures for the Stone Bridge last year.

I wasn’t expecting we would be getting rich off of selling farktography shots, and I don’t see why Drew would be involved in proceeds from things that are not his creative property. He is not taking money from the Farktography book, except whatever is needed to host the Fark party if we ever get it released. But why would we limit it? If someone wants to take the time to make their photos available for someone to buy, that’s their option. I don’t know why anything would change and there’s certainly been some photos people have posted that I would pay money to have – I’m actually going to order a print of one of ennuipoet‘s after the wedding when we have disposable income again. I would like to see Farktography become more integrated into the Fark world which would hopefully grow our community, and offering Farktographs through the fark.com store (for example) would be another way to do that, and reward participants in a way that doesn’t involve actual prizes as was being discussed in the other thread.

olavf I’m not talking about making every photo in every contest available to anyone who wants a copy. What I would want to do is make a separate store where you as a Farktographer could choose to host work you posted in a contest available for sale. You would have to upload the file, it wouldn’t just take it from the contest threads. Of course there would be a TOS agreement stating it had to have been used in a contest or we have the right to remove it. We could also take requests and try to contact a farktographer if someone wanted a copy of their photo. But then the proceeds would go something like 90 or 95% to the photographer, keeping 5-10% for the cost of keeping the site maintained less of course the actual cost of manufacture.

You’re right in that it’s probably too complicated or hairy. But it would be cool and another way to get people interested in playing and in our art if we did have it.

If you’re planning on doing studio/portraiture then an external flash + softbox would also be a good choice but I second the 24mm or 50mm lens. We use the 24 constantly.

This discussion actually makes me wonder if we should set up a Farktography photo shop where we could choose what photos we want to make available and figure out how to partner with something like Shutterfly (having tried Shutterfly and Snapfish, Shutterfly is better quality by a lot) and see if we could sell prints of our work. Which would be great if we do work out the “Fark Photo of the Week” thing on the main page mentioned in the other thread.

Thanks 🙂 I’m glad to be here and I’m learning a lot – (and the more I know, the more I know I don’t know, so that learning’s going to be increasing a LOT hah)

    Tell me about it!

Yeah we were actually having a problem with Fark saying that the img urls weren’t actually images and his hosting hiccuped yesterday in prime voting time while neither of us could get anywhere we could do anything about it.
