The first rule of Farktography should be “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

Votes are a poor measure of quality, because I’ve seen hundreds of beautiful photos go by the wayside in favor of a funny or clever entry here. It’s going to happen.

The best way to get better is to just keep shooting. You will eventually develop and eye and learn things as if by osmosis. It’s quite literally a practice-makes-perfect hobby. When someone says something nice to me, I try to keep my head screwed on straight by remembering that for all the nice shots they praise, I shot a few thousand crappy ones to get there.

What I’m saying, long-windedly, I’m afraid, is that you can’t rush this. By the same token, if you love shooting, don’t get discouraged by not instantly living up to your expectations of yourself. I’ve been shooting crappy photographs for 40 years, and loved every minute of it.

    Just enjoy yourself.

    What he said….

It took me a long time just to break the top 20 in any contest and well over a year of entering 3 shots every week to get my one and only “win”. The voters on Fark don’t follow any set criteria, so I just shoot and enter what I like and take the votes as they come.

Your 1st shot is pretty good. I maybe would have focused on the “Penthouse” name more and applied some noise reduction along with sharpening to clean up the shot.

2nd Shot is ok. maybe a different arrangement of the discs?

3rd shot is meh..kind of dark and uninteresting. I don’t know what you could do to make it better.

This is a game of practice. Keep shooting. It doesn’t cost anything when you shoot digital.

Read up on photography and composition. There are some pretty good websites out there that can be very informative.

We have done a few abandoned themes already (and they are always awesome!)

So maybe we need to twist it up a bit?

i’m leaning real hard toward the pun aspect for one entry. anyone have a problem with that?

I expect to see puns, and will be disappointed if there are none 🙂

Hmm..I think clouddancer has a point. We may need to clarify this a bit. It was never really discussed in the original thread as to what the the limitations are.

My initial impressions were to show factories, manufacturing, heavy equipment etc. Though after thinking about it, someone performing a task may fit also.

The real way is with a Neutral Density Filter. With a P&S this don’t work for the most part. You could get one and rig up some way to hold it in front of the lens or get a good pair of sunglasses 🙂

58mm? Sounds like Canon. Junk the lot of ’em.

// don’t actually have anything worthwhile to add….

Watch out Nikon Boy…We have Canons and are not afraid to shoot them!

/I’ve never heard of a “digital protection filter”

//I have UV filters or for the most part no filter.

A while back, I had to get a wisdom tooth pulled. I was less than excited about it and my kids felt my discomfort. I found this on my desk on the day of the procedure. Pretty neat.

    Aww thats so cool.

My kids always just laughed evilly at my suffering and wanted to see the bloody hole in my mouth. 🙄

I’m having trouble cropping my pictures- when I click the crop button and try to select part of the image, there’s just a little grabby hand which doesn’t do anything instead of the pointer and crop symbol that usually shows up. Anyone know what might be the problem?

Forgive my ignorance, but what does that have to do with aperture help?

Also, what program are you using to try to crop your pictures?

Aperture is a photo editing software for Macs.

(Don’t use Mac so sorry can’t help)

Canon Rebel XS or Nikon D40 are the best place to start in the DSLR market. Both are cheap (under $600.00)and come with decent lenses in the kit. You can build your lens collection from that starting point.

A good P&S is ok but to get a really decent one you are going to spend almost as much. So why not start out with the real thing?

Thinking outside the box is what makes farktography so great. Just when I think I have figured out all the variations of a theme someone comes with with something totally off the wall.

Woohoo, my own portfolio. How cool is that? I redid some shots of the firepit. I also found a troll doll I forgot I had, so I took some pictures of that. It’s ugly as hell, but it’s cute too. Apparently the thread isn’t live yet, so I’ll wait until it is to post. Gives me a bit more time to be okay with my choices anyway.

    So. Here’s the firepit:

    And the troll:

I cropped ring 1 and will put that one in too. I’ll also have Photobucket scale them down and make sure a link is available to the larger version. You guys (and girls) are awesome. Another round for everyone! Hell, make it 2!

The contest goes live at 8pm EST for Total Farkers only and at midnight for the whole of Farkland.
Remember to keep your shots under 200 kb or Fark will reject them as too large. Also Fark will resize them to 640 x 1100 pixels if they are bigger. This may or may not screw up the quality of your shot so keep that in mind when resizing your shots to upload for the contest.

(just in case you didn’t know)

    Thanks!
The G10 is a very very nice camera. I was torn between it and the Fuji f100 or a Panasonic LX3. Nobody had the Pano Or Fuji in stock so I grabbed the Canon at best buy. I am the worst impulse buyer you have ever met, I cannot order stuff and wait for it. When I decide I want something i have to just go get it. I am happy with the Canon, it is like a little dSLR.

I am still lusting after the Sigma DP2 though, but that’s like $300 more than I paid for the Canon.

    Maybe next year.
