olavf, looks good, I wouldn’t mind seeing a full-res crop.

Clouds didn’t turn out to be quite as bad as initially forecast, mostly just low-lying haze, but the humidity was off the charts. Extremely dense fog and condensation, so not exactly ideal shooting conditions. rav, hope you got a little less atmospheric moisture out there. The haze really shows up in the totality shots.

Thanks! I barely started poking through the rest of them last night before I crashed – that one just caught my eye. I plan to spend the evening going through then – after I get my contest subs together 😛

That was our problem too – It was clear for a while, up until about 50%. Then the clouds started coming in, and I had to shoot through holes. Then they went away and the haze totally kicked in in time for the full eclipse. Oh well.

Looks like you got some great ones though, all things considered!

Caveat: I’m not an astrophotographer by any means, And had to do my shooting with a non-IS 100-300mm lens and a tripod that didn’t want to be stable on the roof. Plus, we’ve got tons of light pollution, and had scattered clouds – before the midnight haze settled in and I had to give up.

    I like this one though.

I’ll look through the rest tomorrow and see if there’s anything else post-worthy.

We’ve got overcast here, but it’s actually turning into spotty clouds. I’m gonna watch it until midnight and see how things go. I’ll have the 300mm at the ready though…

    congratulations Harpo.

On a side note: BEST FINISH EVER!
as you can tell I’m kind of proud of that. When I started doing this about a year ago, my goal was to participate every week, then I aimed for 1 photo in the top 25%, then top 20, then top 5. Next step is a win. I suspect it’s still a ways off yet, but I’ll keep on tryin’.

You’ve got to do it right, though. It took me two+ years to get my first win, but other than (IIRC) 16th place, I have every slot in the top 20 now 😉
    /way to go!

A “vertical take-three” contest could be an interesting challenge though…

With the make this as fanciful as you want…IF I get a camera for Christmas that has this capability…

Tilt shift is appropriate here? Even if I do get the camera that has diorama mode…the trick is actually GETTING the shot I want.

That is going to require a lot of things going right…

Asa general rule, anything you can do in-camera is appropriate. I try to think “if I had a film camera, and processed my own negs, could I do this?” as a guide.

maybe i’ll start using that. far better than admitting i take crappy photos 🙂

I’d NEVER admit to that 😉

Thanks EdenLiesObscured. I’ll admit I’ve used one other shot from that session, but it’s not often you get a relatively empty bar and free reign with the camera (and willing participants to boot).

It was a deliberate ‘off-focus’ shot, and I’m glad folks got the ‘feeling’ though. I don’t often do well with these sort of contests, due to the subtle and astract nature of my brain, apparently 😛

I don’t think you’d want to use an angle grinder on a screen. A steel plate would be much better.

Then you should move the extraneous stuff from your field of view 😛

I think youre underestimating the power of cats.

I’ve been shooting with my 50 mm yesterday and today. I really don’t like being restricted with my lens choices. I understand the purpose of the theme – I just don’t like it. 🙁

I took my 50mm to.a.parade. Yesterday. I kind of enjoyed the challenge, but it was certainly that.
/I don’t know that I’ll use three from there, but I may. I’ve gone out with just the 50mm on before, but I’m not sure I want that degree of difficulty to my archive-diving 😛

In other news, I don’t have a problem with light cropping. Getting rid of that spurious elbow or wire doesn’t detract from the contest at all IMO. I will say that a 25+% or whatever crop is outside the spirit of the contest though, and anything that was obviously cropped to a high degree probably wouldn’t get my vote.

olavf: Nice beer selection, one of my favs. And forty’s not that bad, really. Now FIFTY, them dude’s is old! 🙂 (which I can only say in jest for a short coupla more years)

Newcastle’s definitely one of my go-to beers. At least until I figure out how to get draught ale at the house. If I could figure out how to make an analog of Fuller’s London Pride….

And, yeah, I was looking in the mirror the other day, though, and pondering the amount of grey, and thinking about all the stuff I’ve wanted to do, etc. I know there’s time for some of it, but time is slipping away 😕

/gotta say, though, I’m proud of that self-portrait. In a lot of ways, one of the best I’ve done.

Cool beans, Orionid. No reason why we couldn’t have both used the same song though. I’m sure it’s not going to be the only time.

I’ve got two ready to go. My original third shot looked more like something from ABBA than Simply Red. Went to shoot another one on Monday night and decided I wasn’t “feeling” it. I may do that one some other time though. We’ll see. My other third wasn’t working last night, so I’m going to give it another go tonight. If not, I’ll try it again for ‘Blur’. /bah
