Well, I mean jeez, if I have to work for it, I may or I may not, but if you’re going to give it away for free…

    This chub’s for you?

I’m going with make it obvious.

That’s more or less my plan. Song title and artist.

Also, Olavf, I hope your Jimmy Buffet song isn’t my Jimmy Buffet bong.

D’oh I just saw your facebook post. I was going to say probably not, but it appears we’re sharing the same bong. *puff* *puff* *pass*

That’s the thing. I’ve got a John Denver so far (which I don’t know how many will get), and a Jimmy Buffet (which I’m pretty sure most of us older farts have contemplated at least once) and am hoping to get something from Merle Haggard, and (with a lot of luck) a Paul McCartney piece. The latter two, I think would stand without any more than a pointer to the artist, the former, song titles may be enough, but I’m not sure.

I suspect that linking to the songs or cover art will help some folks, but at the same time, I doubt most people will bother. Look at how many folks click through to larger versions of the photos – realistically, not that many. The more I think about it, I personally wouldn’t have a problem with links, but I wouldn’t count on them helping explain the piece.

-edit: I’ll be adding artist and song titles, but I’m on the fence on links. I’d like to know what other folks think.

I, personally, would appreciate song titles/albums at least. I was wondering about youtube links earlier today, myself. I doubt that they’d be widely clicked, but one of mine is just enough off the beaten path that our younger viewers aren’t likely to get it. It’s a beautiful picture, and I’m going to use it either way, but encouraging links is a question I had in my head.

    1812?

/Not using it. I’ve got…other ideas. Something with ‘splosions might work well though.

Bizet would be tough. Dancers in a wedding come to mind. http://www.sfsymphony.org/music/ProgramNotes.aspx?id=38424

‘Summon the Heroes’ almost screams football players coming on to the pitch to me.

I’ve shied away from the classical, personally, just because most of the pieces I could think of are a bit too esoteric for really capturing in a single image. I had some ideas, but they all needed at least a month’s planning =/

Thanks! It took two and a half years, but I’ve finally rounded out my top tens 😀

I wouldn’t have complained if I’d shared this one with Silverstag and his most excellent shot though.

    Here’s my take:

I use DPP as my RAW editor…
Initially I set the WB to ‘daylight’ but it didn’t quite work after I started tweaking settings, and ended up with a custom WB of 4400K. I used the ‘Landscape’ picture style preset which tends to make the blues pop a bit more, particularly, but it also brings out some of the lowlights. On the RAW tab, contrast +1, shadow +2, sharpness @6. On the RGB tab, dropped the red curve a hair, and bumped the blue by a hair less. Used the stamp tool to get rid of those two dust spots in the sky that were bugging me.

Didn’t do nuttin’ in Gimp except resize.

i’m drinking my sambuca in anticipation of the anxiety of waiting for days to see how the masses vote, to see if the populace shares any similar opinions of my photos that i do.

i really should do better in convincing myself that votes/comments/views are irrelevant.

    good luck, all.

I do this every week. Well, not the Sambuca, but….

They are relevant, but try and remember that they don’t necessarily have any reflection on the quality of your shots. I try (and often fail, but hey)

I agree with him to some extent, anyway. The digital (web) medium is cool, but there’s still a lot to be said about seeing a photo with your own eyes. Much like a painting loses most of its luster when viewed on the screen (or as a print for that matter). The medium doesn’t do well for subtlety. It’s an intrinsic part of my personal difficulty with these contests as well – I’m not terribly good at the ‘wow’ factor.

Silly question (sort of). do cadences count? I posed this to hubby and both he and his friend piped up with a particular one (that I need one item for, actually) but it’s a cadence they both did (Hubby was Army, Friend was ROTC and something about Marines and a screw up with medical records). Anyway, the lyrics/cadence in question has been around so long it’s a traditional now, but it was modified and put into song. So, do cadences count?

It’s a song, right? Go for it. I didn’t limit by genre anyway. Classical, rock, blues, whatever.

    That’s pretty goddamned cool though.

They deserved it…though I prefered “Spotlight” over “Back.” I’m a huge fan of negative space, moodiness. Personally, I’d go for a different composition, but that’s just me.

Thanks! I think I agree with you. ‘Back’ was the original idea that I had going into the studio, but as I was playing around with the lighting I decided to cut the hair light all together and grab the flashlight. I know what I want to fix – center her in the frame a bit more, and probably bring grab the 4-cell to get a bit more light. Now, to figure out how to cut the picture oval and do a cameo framing. That’s going to be tricky 😉

I’m generally not in favor of dropping contests that have hit the vote level, but we’ve got a lot of stuff in the hopper as it is, and no one seems to have been clamoring to get this one scheduled. I’d be okay dropping it too.

When exactly is the voting cut-off time?

Sometime Saturday night. I don’t know if anyone knows exactly.

    And, congrats Harpo!
