ParticipantRe: ‘Nothing’, I really wanted to do this one (I had one in the hopper, even), but I can see the point about drawing interest, and we’re certainly not having any shortage in the theme suggestion department that active farktographers are ‘liking’.
That being said, here’s the hopper’d one, just so I don’t feel I wasted the shot:

Maybe I’ll find another contest with which to use it…

ParticipantNope, just what you all do. I’d love to see a Gallery of Farktography; y’all are an unknown wellspring of talent. One or more of you folks are going to be famous someday, so look around and make sure you say hello to each other.
Well, there is the upcoming coffee table book. Of course, that will lead to the talk show circuit tours, the mini series, the movie, then of course the Broadway musical. At some point in there, someone is sure to put together a gallery showing, perhaps in conjunction with the musical, you know, for the after-premiere party.
So just bide your time. 😉

ParticipantBy far, this contest proved to take more of my time in idea crafting than any other. Very challenging to figure out what might work, then to see what actually does (at least to me). I wish I had more resources to put into this one. But along the way, I created a couple economical directional lighting/shadow setups that will work nicely in other themes as I think they will in this one, so there’s a bonus for me. A most fun challenge, though. Just hope my commonish-selections aren’t done to death.
I certainly plan on adding the artists’ names and album/song title, and I don’t feel it’s necessary in my case to link further, but if pictures are to be reproductions of existing album artwork, I’d certainly like a link to see the original to better appreciate what the farktographer has done.

ParticipantSome of my favorite songs are that of Classical Music.
Summon the Heroes, The Olympic Spirit, The 1812 Overture, Farandole.
The only one of these I even REMOTELY have a picture for is the 1812. I have gone to the DC 4th of the July concert for the past three years.
If you fellow farktographers were going to do these songs…any suggestions??
I’m trying to stick to stuff the common farker might know. My search involved finding lists of the top 100-300 songs of the 20th century (which included such songs as ‘Give My Regards to Broadway’ and ‘Tumbling Tumbleweeds’), then trying to determine what 1) people would know, despite their age 2) I could actually photograph.
And I had three good ideas, except when I went to the Phoenix Zoo Lights, the ‘lion’ exhibit was not part of the show (was gonna go for the Token’s “Lion Sleeps Tonight”.) *fail*
I have two. One might even get votes. I’m stuck on #3 (unless I settle for the house cat as a ‘lion’).
The difficult part of ‘classical’ music is so many people wouldn’t know it by title and picture alone. Holst’s ‘The Planets’ came to my mind, but my shots of the planets are not exactly Hubble-worthy (which people now take for granted) and not many people would know who Holst was to begin with.
I’m still searching for #3.

ParticipantHa! I’d loved to have seen the face on the kid at that moment! Ta funnay…

ParticipantWould blur caused by a longish exposure upon the surface of water at night count?

ParticipantI also cropped it slightly and killed a dust speck or two….
You missed the pigeon poo in the position 1 o’clock window piece, and I think that’s a couple making out up there in the tiers.
//Wow. Nice work.
ravnostic
Participantoh, and I didn’t bother with dust delete. And wow, but didn’t that come out posting much more poorly than I’d anticipated?
ravnostic
ParticipantSure, I’ll bite.

I don’t know all the lingo, so here goes: I used my Canon Digital Photo Professional (whew–that part was easy!). Brightness is at 32, contrast at 12, saturation at 98 and sharpness at 210. I changed the color temp to 64K. Other than that, there’s the RGB channels (?), which I don’t know how to describe, so here’s a pic:

My goal was to 1) reproduce the very much golden/reddish lighting of early sunrise–the shadows tell me the sun’s within ~/<15 degrees of the horizon 2) stay true to the natural colors, in that shadowed areas are lit by reflected sky-blue lighting (which I worked with the curves to bring out), and thus become more 'purple' as a result, and yet [see larger image] detail is still preserved and even a bit enhanced in the darker areas at the fuller resolution.
Can’t say whether or not I achieved any of that, but that was the effort. Should all fall within current f’graphy parameters. No?

Participant*raises a bourbon from the table in the corner*
It’s the one’s at the corner tables you have to worry about… 😯
Cheers!
*takes a sip of my sweet and sour on the rocks, with pinky extended cuz I’m classy that way*Hey, are you eying that guy at the corner table? O no you ditn’t! 😮
a tip of my sambuca toward you
Oh, good, someone to provide the music…
um, you meant the other sambuca, didn’t ya? We drinks ya know. My bad.I haven’t looked at your earlier stuff, so I had to assume you must’ve posted quite a bit of low-vote-getting stuff earlier that was dragging you down. If so, you’ve certainly come a long way as that’s not the case any longer.
So, congrats on your well-earned entry to the lists!
Don’t look at the earlier stuff. 😥 It’s not pretty. You know, I used to just point and click, like the p/s’ers do. Fancy camera and everything. Now I sit there and ‘compose’. Or my favorite, when the camera is on and life composes for me and I happen to get the shot. I’ve got a lot of good shots that way.
I’ll lift my Coke Zero to you. Under normal circumstances it would be a glass of wine but that is frowned upon for pregnant ladies – sigh. . .
It’s cool (not to mention rewarding) that you can see improvement over the weeks. I keep an eye on the FSM myself and am making incremental improvements.
Don’it suck that you can’t just have a few highballs and a Lucky Strike like women did in the 1960’s? And maybe a pill or two, too boot. But then again, the result might be useful in a theme for ‘carnival attractions’. And not in a good way. 😯 or rather, 💡 –you know, the mutant factor.

/me checks fridge for beer, finds none. Vodka and coke will have to do….I sure wish I had time to spend on the contests. You folks are great inspiration. I feel like a patron wandering a museum in here.
Wait. Did you just call us all museum pieces? 😕
mIRC FTW!

What did I tell ya about the ones in the corners?
You’ve come a long way, baby. Every week you’re in or knocking around the top 10. I look forward to your stuff each week (as I do with a number of the ‘regulars’).
I have had a similar experience with this community and express my thanks right along with you.
Good people in these parts, to be sure. Honestly, I am flattered and amazed at how well I’ve been doing each week. And it seems it takes fewer compositions to get there. If I can get to Mopsy‘s level, I’ll be happy (I might outrank her in the ‘recent’ stats according to ‘voters’, but your mom has consistently posted what I consider to be noteworthy and enviable photographs.) And yours aren’t too bad, either. Apples and trees.

ParticipantI was wondering about cropping on this one; it seems to me that cropping (esp at fark resolution/filesizes) is a form of ‘zoom’ in this case, and with the point being a prime lens (or equiv.) contest, that might want to be discouraged. But then I figured who would know for sure and who’d wanna enforce it and it all became a clusterfark in my head and it’s had been a long night at work and now I’m home and tired and all I want to do is have a couple of beers and scour the forums for a few run-on sentences to write, so nevermind.
//but I’m planning on ‘no cropping’ as a personal rule.
ravnostic
ParticipantJust a note to say this is an educational thread. I’m 1/2 lost in it, but am grasping the larger concepts. I should take a photography class. There seems to be much to learn.
ravnostic
ParticipantDo I macro with the Darlot, or go prime-focus with the telescope ( I’m thinking terrestrial perhaps)? Decisions, decisions…And it’s not a theme from which you can readily draw from the archives (I suppose you could look at the exif data).
ravnostic
ParticipantI’m liking the entries so far, in particular Mopsy, Eden… (the blurry one), and Because I Said So had ones I particularly enjoyed.
Thanks, rav! If you liked those, all of my bees are from that same trip.
And while I echo the sentiments on your fencepost shot, your Golden Toasted Sunset was the one that grabbed my eye first. The leaves are almost like little flames licking up from the bed of stones, aren’t they?
Love the B’s, Cause! GTS was named for the fact it looked like little back-lit toasted corn flakes. Taken just outside my apt about 6 weeks ago, it was a serendipity shot. Glad you liked!
[edit–thanks Plamadude, as well. :-)]
ravnostic
ParticipantRav, your shot with the fence is really really fantastic. Sometimes I wish you posted with Flickr so I could fave them.
Thanks. I do post them in my FB acct, which you can PM me to find if you’d like. That particular one was also one of my entries in the Az Highways photo contest; don’t know that it will win as it’s not a full landscape view (and it’s in that category), but I do think they’ll at least think it’s a nice picture. I love it. Sadly, I accidently erased the RAW version, and had to work with the jpeg (unless it’s hiding somewhere in my drives, which sometimes happens.)

//going to be a tight contest!!
