On the other hand, none of these birds are airborne…
Great picture–but IMO, while I wouldn’t exclude backgrounds, I’d want the subject that draws the interest to be airborne. Damn the Engrish langoo-edge.

ParticipantHow about just “Difficulty: no natural phenomena, i.e. clouds, stars, etc.”
Yeah, this, but the wording might be too limiting; my shot in the recent b/w contest, as an example, with the plane pulling away from the clouds**, someone might not submit given the verbiage.
I’m still hoping for the shot of the plane as it passes in front of the moon (only been looking for it for a few years now)–the moon is a compositional element in such an image; a reference, a backdrop, but really, it’s only a picture of the moon (not theme-worthy) until you put a helicopter or plane or bird right in front of it (IMO, theme-worthy). I’d not want to exclude someone from posting that kind of shot because of the difficulty++.
**yeah, I have other frames of the same that I could use–but I really loathe that kind of recycling, and try to avoid it where possible, esp. so recently as 2 contests ago.
++and I’d be a jealous bastard if they did.

ParticipantWoohoo, I have internet again! In time to answer a question it seems, too. When I was thinking “airborne” I was thinking particular objects – not cloudscapes. I don’t think it really fits in with the theme here (though, technically, it could). Let’s try to stick to no clouds, no stars, no sun, no moon, etc.
I was thinking along the lines of ‘off-ground objects within the earth’s atmosphere, but also excluding those things a part of earth’s atmosphere.’
Eliminates astrophoto-centric stuff, plus the clouds/lightning/rays-of-sunshine-etc. that people might be compelled to enter.
The hardest part of many themes is that the idea behind them is clear, to us frequent viewers, but how to word it concisely for the non-forum venued poster, not-so-much.

to the idea, I think this is a GREAT suggestion. Bonus for Bibliosaurus Rex–Kes probably knows more about the individual contest themes from her book research AND is willing to do the work!!

ParticipantProbably a glitch in the Matrix. Did a black cat cross your path, twice?

ParticipantPut the 2nd best first, the best last, and throw everything else in the middle. Someone said that once, and that’s usually how I post. Except when I don’t. And the voters sort it out in the end, anyway.

ParticipantTechnically, also, the rescuees are holding down the chopper. But I think the chopper probably won. 😀

ParticipantI got that sporadically last week; I noticed it in Firefox, but not Chrome or IE.

ParticipantWow–here’s to a speedy recover. You write a very good story, btw.

ParticipantThis was an interesting theme. It snuck up on me. I hadn’t shot specifically for it, but fortunately had some decent shots that say “Summer”, even though I took a few thousand this summer, most don’t.
*Fingers crossed* – I rarely do “people” shots, and all three are, 2 have nieces.
All of ^this^.
1/3 for me. The other two are cop-outs, really. We do what we must.
[edit] **ooh hai!** all of my entries for this could also be used for “Airborne”.
//damn. That makes things…difficult.

ParticipantCorrect me if I’m wrong; but it’s okay to blur out a license plate number in a photo I want to use? It’s a private vehicle, at a residential location (dads).

ParticipantHaboobs. I just love the word. Two links to a couple panos:
This one is about 432kb, comprised of some 11 shots, taken first, and spans some 190 degrees:

This one is about 3.8Mb (full-res), 5 images, 180 degrees, taken when it was nearly upon me:

(smaller, 300Kb version here: http://fossilspringsaz.com/pics/2011/sep/11/haboobpano4a.jpg
Tiny version of the last for those who don’t like to look at big pictures:

ParticipantYay!! 😀
Funny thing about the winning picture–it was the ‘last minute, last ditch’ entry, a throw-away from my ‘Sports Photography’ photo shoot. I posted it to G+ and quite a few in the ‘photo critique’ circle gave it raves (ravs?) My personal opinion was it was just ‘meah’. But I figured if they all liked it, maybe the fark voters would, too.
Now if someone can just explain to me just what everyone sees in it that I don’t, maybe I could improve my averages on a more consistent basis… 🙂
Not-funny thing about the spoon with a fork shadow: except for converting to b/w and resizing, there was –zero– post processing done. I took pictures till I got it ‘right’, straight out of the camera. Took a little more time, but I think it was a good learning process/subject.

ParticipantNow I can see it. I can see why they picked it–the focus is on the presenter, but there’s enough clarity of the slide presentation to see the subject he’s discussing. Nice work!

ParticipantI get an error whether I click or copy/paste the text. Retry? But elsewise and meanwhile–congrats!!
