    Some b-sides: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42385982@N06/sets/72157626007121333/

Judging by how poorly my statue entry is doing, I wish I’d picked one of the murals or graffiti.

    The plaza dragon, esp.

ennui, I kind of went with the combination of both. Did I like what was depicted? Then further, did I like how it was captured by the farktographer? If a ‘yes’ to both, then it got my vote. And a few select ones got it meeting only one of the criteria, exceptionally.

I think the ‘liters’ really brought it this week.

thanks for the advice this far; sleeping; Genuine Fractals is the one I was trying to name that wouldn’t work for my graphics card. The one I’m trying has a slew of ways to do it; including bicubic and Lanczos, as well as splines of 3 shorts and a few others.

Well, if it’s just modems and not laptops, the phone line would make sense. But even if turned off, if stuff’s plugged in during an elec. surge, it could be damaged (or so the interweb sez). And yeah–I totally hear ya on the cable company and modem models they support. Shesh.

I’da ziploc’d the camera and taken the shots anyway. Not that the FSM shows it, but I kinda like taking weather pictures, and can do pretty well sometimes. This summer, my goal is to figure out how to master lightning so I can finally compete with caradoc. Difficulty factor: I gotta get me built one of them fandangled irfanred thingamabobbies to trigger the sensor.

rav, what images are you trying to enlarge and how big of a print are you trying to get? If these are images from your Rebel, you shouldn’t need any special software. I’ve had a 4 megapixel image (from a Powershot G2) enlarged to 20″x30″ and it looked fine (although that’s about the upper limit for that small resolution).

Well, see, that’s only part of the point. My latest picture is frame 6929, so I’m closing in on 40K pictures with the camera. I’d say well over 1/2 have been taken since I joined farktography, but moreso early on; I’ve been getting by on fewer and fewer shots (as a ratio of overall attempts before getting it close to right, and knowing when that camera setting is telling me); I’ve learned metering and recently have taken on histograms.

Of all these shots, IIRC, the only one I have printed is http://fossilspringsaz.com/pics/2011/may/11/weather1lg.jpg; I had one done at 20×30 and I have one at 16×24. They came out well, but I’d have liked a bit more clarity on the larger one. With what I’ve done thus-far in the program, it could be achieved.

Surprisingly, I have 9 other framed photos ranging in size from 16×20 to 3×4, all from before I had my digital camera; they were shot on an old Minolta I had, ala film. Some of them I wish I could get a raw file so I could do curves and really make them pop. Oh, well.

What else interests me is the idea of a full-frame shot lacking any specific honed interest, but in some wee-corner something interesting is occurring. The better resampling could lead to a better usable shot. Alas, this doesn’t seem to be the case, or that I’ve figured out how to do at least.

The program I’m looking at is $30, so it’s not a huge deal, really. But I’m hoping someone here has experienced and tried some of this, and might offer some insight.

CD DO at your earliest opportunity to do so, invest in a decent surge protector (or two). Sorry to hear this.

But I have to say, I’m laughing at myself because I kept reading ‘lighting’ and not ‘lightning’ for some three times, trying to figure out what you were trying to convey. I iz stoopid.

Schnee’s stat manager gets the numbers data, but doesn’t display the pictures and their respective votes. 🙁

Alas no. But we now have our very own Fark Forum.

Nice to be recognized as a ‘real’ sub-culture group! And I like the little tag comments that appear under the fark logo–that’s new too?

I noticed this, too, Mopsy; I knew they’d recently changed some things in there recently but it does look graphically different today overall.

Very nice! Soosh will be proud. And I’m ever the more envious of same! Never seen anything like it in ‘videoish’ format before.

olavf that’s very cool. Being optically challenged, this is worth looking into (I have my prescription around here somewhere, so all the better).

//another way to get the soft focus is to mate an 1879 lens to a 2005 camera. Worked for me, at least. 😉

For backdrop, you might also look into fabric. Yes, it can wrinkle, but not as bad as paper can, particularly when the kids are shuffling around on it. I’ve actually had pretty good success with using regular flat sheets – particularly for non-white backgrounds.

I use this idea often. Wal*Mart has cheap 200 thread count pillow cases that fit snuggly over a canvas board I got at Michael’s, in a slew of colors. Yes, I have to iron, and yes, I have to use those tape-like things to get rid of the ever-present Blerticus fur, but they work great. With a low f/setting, you don’t even notice the threads. I’ve got black and white, red, and taupe. I also have a mottled green (see my entries for “Just Desserts”) and mottled ochre (same as in my 4th place finish for this contest). Great for the budget-minded farktographer.

I’ve just returned from downtown Phoenix, looking for shots. WOW–we have a graffiti alley (called Roosevelt Row). EVERYTHING is painted.

Don’t know that I’ll use any of it, but I also came across this mural, which I’m considering, though I may go with a more detailed, up close view. Not a panoramic, but rather a crop, which due to my f/settings, came out a little blurrier on the right than I’d like it to be. (But tomorrow is another day).

Posting not for the contest, but just for the cool urban art factor (at least to me.)

Full size image, but downgraded quality so it’s only 343kb.
