ParticipantMy wife and I would have the best possibilty of going if it is the first (Oct. 6-7) or the third (Oct. 20-21) weekend. She has to work the other weekends. She isn’t a big fan of Vegas, but I think I could talk her into it.

ParticipantThanks Elsinore and monkeybort. Now that I am thawed out, I am kind of disappointed in myself. I went there to shoot the event, but I ended up trying to get a good photo of Obama. I got there 3 hours early and walked around shooting the media mostly. I noticed the line only had about 50 people in it. I got in line thinking I would be right up front. Before I went, I checked online, and while there I asked people if tickets were needed. The answer was always no. Turns out you didn?t need tickets to get in, but if you wanted you get close, you had to have a ticket. I saw basically 3 ?corrals?. Non ticket holders got put in the back corral. Friends, union reps and probably people who donated money, got red tickets and were put in the corral in front of us. Close friends and family had yellow tickets and went in the corral in front of the red section. I also saw gates for blue ticket holders and white ticket holders, but I?m not sure where they ended up. Looking at the news coverage later, there were probably 5000 people in front of me and about 10000 people behind me. I wish I would have stayed on the fringes, there was a lot of interesting things going on, like the motorcade showing up and an abortion protest. Also after about 3 ? hours in below freezing weather, my camera seemed to get a bit of a shutter lag, I think.

ParticipantWell, I made it. I hope this post makes sense, I am going on about 3 hours sleep. Taking photos was alot harder than I thought it was going to be. After waiting an hour and a half in line to get in, we had to wait anougher hour and a half for the speech. I was 10 degrees out. I was one of the first one to get in, so I tried to get a good position. By time the speech started we were crammed in there shoulder to shoulder and I got moved over to where there was a small tree between me and the stage. It seemed every time I would try and get a shot some one in front of me would hold a camera or sign over their head. Also, if you see in the crowd a guy waving a large American flag, I happened to be standing right next to him. So I got a few blurry close ups of the flag.
Here is a link to a flicker folder of some of the better ones.

ParticipantI have the 18-55mm kit lens for the Rebel. I am also bringing a 75-300mm Zoom. I know shaitty glass, I spent way more than we can afford. Thank the FSM I have an understanding wife. I work accross the street from the Old State Capitol where the event is being held. It is going to be outside. I walked around and checked out where the stage is at, different vantage points, stuff like that. I think getting good pictures is going to depend on how early I can get up, and how many people show up. I saw about 30 sat. trucks lined up on the street. I watched some of the Chicago news crews do the live feeds for the 10 o clock news. It should be interesting.

ParticipantWe got hit the last day of November with an ice storm. After 2 days of no heat we went to a hotel. I found a 3000 Watt generator online for $299 delivered. That should be enough to keep the fridge, furnace and a few other things like TV or computer going. We were supposed to get hit with 3 waves of ice this time, but only one made it and it melted right away. It does make for some great photo ops.

ParticipantWe had a bad ice storm on Dec. 1 so the hard part this week is picking 3. Everything was covered in about half-inch of ice. I took about 180 photos. Can’t post until after work tonight, about 11:00CT.

ParticipantI would of posted sooner, but the power went out Thursday night because of the ice storm. It has been in the mid 20s during the day and about 6 at night. My wife and I lasted until Sat. afternoon at the house (It was in the mid 40s inside) when we headed to the hotel. Power came back on last night.
Now about the camera. When I got it it wasnt wound. I took the shot but didnt wind it. It seemed to be just a basic point and shoot. Try not to over think it, just have fun.
