ParticipantYeah, definitely don’t bow out. I put up stuff regularly that I know isn’t exactly within the theme but works for whatever reason to my way of thinking. I’ve had some pretty good results with that, and some not so great.
That raindrop photo bugs the hell out of me for reasons I can’t quite express.

ParticipantU-Man, try diffusing your flash more. some low-budget diffusers that I have used include circles of 1-gallon milk jugs (you can stack them for more and more diffusing) or even just kleenex/white tissue paper over the flash.
What do y’all think of this for the minimalism theme? It was taken on a damned cold day, directly into the winter sun, which was filtered by fog. The ocean surface is frozen, somewhat, which is why it seems like there is a hill leading to the two small boats, which had guys breaking ice away from salmon hatchery stuff. This is a color photo.

I like this one, too, but not sure if it’s minimalist enough.

ParticipantI’m not all for a kids theme, either. I love photographing my own, but looking through a whole page of other people’s kids, eh. call me anti-social, you won’t be the first.
same holds true for the cat and (to a lesser extent) dog threads.

Participantsome of my favorites of my kids
Dude. They are growing up. I like the football field one a bunch. Actually, I like the second one alot, too.
Thanks.
yeah, they are growing up. the younger one started middle school this week and his older brother is in 8th grade and nearly as tall as me.

Participantlove that second one. love all of them.

Participantthose are awesome.
have you tried playing with your aperture to see what kind of effect that might have on your lightning shots? for shooting star trails and night skies, if I drop the aperture down to f/8 or so, I can effectively erase half of the stars in the sky — they just don’t show up, no matter how long the exposure is. opening up to f/2.8 or f/1.8, and the sky suddenly is filled with more stars than are imaginable. for instance:
this is f/5:

this is f/8

this is f/11

compare that to wide open:
f/1.8

I wonder if you’d get any similar effect with lightning.

ParticipantI can think of a lot of features I’d put above projector to have in a camera. It’s like they are just picking scraps of paper out of a hat.

Participantmy entries are going to be late, because the last photo of one depends on an event that doesn’t happen for another hour or so.
also, I got two hours of sleep last night, directly related to that event and this contest.

Participantthat last one is really great.
I didn’t get mine done last night and probably won’t have anything for this week.

ParticipantI’m doing long exposure.

ParticipantI did not know that.
My 100-400 has an element made out of flourite, which I think is ungodly cool.

ParticipantI’m wondering about the quality of the various lenses being discussed. Is it possible that some of the lenses are not glass but plastic. I’m told that if you purchase a lens from some of the extremely low costing sites, the quality of the lens can be affected, even on the name brand lens. Has anyone experienced this? I’m fairly new to all this, my previous experience was with a point and shoot, but Farkers probably already know about the possible compromise in the quality of name brand lenses.
Plastic is getting down into Holga quality. I wouldn’t buy from any company besides Amazon, KEH.com, B&H photo, or Adorama. There are a ton of scam cammera shops out there. The above are as honest as you’re going to find, and at the best prices. B&H is who I trust the most and they are exceptional to deal with. They, seriously, are one of the most rock-stable companies I’ve ever run across.
This page can be rather enlightening:

Participantthe 70-200 f/4L is one of Canon’s sharpest lenses and goes for a lot less than you might expect.

Participantthere is always the 100-400L IS option, which is what I have. Yes, it’s expensive as hell, but it’s a very very versatile lens.
I do want a 70-200L, though. And a 300 f/4. And a 400 f/2.8….
