ParticipantWe’ve always been open to worldy influence with patriotic/flag stuff. I say this theme should do the same and include letters from all languages.
Does anybody see a problem with that?
U-Man
ParticipantNo “U” yet. But I’m looking.
‘guine – I don’t know exactly what you mean but it sounds like it would be OK. If you have and doubts, you could post here.
U-Man
ParticipantI have four so far. Oddly enough, all are natural (not man-made) objects.

ParticipantHey all you pyros, this mom is “listening.” Stay safe!
For some reason, I think that comment is directed at me.
By the way fellow pyros, mopsy is one of us. While she doesn’t get into burning chemicals or explosions, she’ll definitely go old school with a giant pile of brush.

ParticipantU-Man, explain your steel wool on a wire burning thing. That looks way cool on photo.

Steel wool burns. Who knew?! It doesn’t burst into flame, but it certainly gets hot and glows and falls apart – especially when you whirl it around. I bought some fine (grade 0000) steel wool, bent a 4 foot length of copper wire around the middle, lit it with a lighter and swung it around. That’s it.
For the photographing part, I used two cameras. Since I have two dSLR’s, it makes it a bit more idiot proof to set up both for these long exposure shots. I used slightly different f-stops and ISO’s and one camera was set for 10 sec and the other for 15 sec. After framing and focusing on the site where I would be, I used shutter release cables and clicked them so that each camera would continue taking pics until I shut them off. Click on cameras…walk to the subject area…light steel wool…whirl around head until it goes out…shut off cameras and get gone.
I forgot to put my hood up during one shot and burned the top of my head. 🙁 Also, wear long sleeves. Burning pieces of metal fly all over the place.

ParticipantOverall, I like your wording. But I’d like to be more specific than ‘printed’. Neon or the “H” from the Hollywood sign are out.
What about this –>
Take photos of everyday or naturally occurring items that look like letters of the alphabet. One letter per photo, and no arranging rocks, twigs, etc to make letters. Difficulty: The subject should be something that is not intended to be a letter.
I’m not married to this wording so any input, tweaks, changes are welcome.
U-Man
ParticipantAlso, we should probably put your clarifications into the theme description, U-Man.
K. Do you have a wording in mind?
U-Man
ParticipantNope. No sign letters. Gotta find letters that aren’t intended to be letters.
If you can move some sticks around so that I don’t notice and make a natural looking letter, that would probably sneak through customs. But making a letter is not really in the spirit of the theme. Slight tweaking of what is already there is OK. (I know, that’s fuzzy. That’s OK.) No arranging pebbles to look like an “S” or taping sticks together for a “K”.
Yes. One letter per picture.
I have exactly one entry so far. I need to switch on my brain for the next few weeks – without getting in an accident. 🙂

ParticipantHeh, I keed because I love the U-man. FWIW I would’ve voted for the bus pic. Cemetery is my 2 cents BTW.
For all the teasing I dish out to those around me, I deserve a bit too. 🙂 And I think you’re just pulling my leg about the voting.
I asked my youngest which pic to use. She said the lightbulb one was “blackest”. I went with it.
I really wanted to use to use the Gary’ pic but it didn’t really fit. He might be ‘black’ but he’s really brown. I had to B&W it make it black.
U-Man
ParticipantI didn’t take it that way. I interpreted it as you wanted to stay away from something that might be taken the wrong way.
Oh yeah, thanks for the input folks – I’m still torn though. I should just decide and get on with my life. 🙂
U-Man
ParticipantWhich of these says “black”, is a good (enough) photo for #3, and follows the spirit of the theme?

ParticipantAt dentist (again) and just read my last post. I was trying to be funny. I hope y’all read it that way.
U-Man
ParticipantWait, B+W is allowed? Great, now I can use that schoolbus pic!
😆 LOL!! You realize why that’s funny right?
Ha Ha. Verra funny mutha fucka. 🙂 I still say it was a clever idea.
/but i’ve put that behind me…grumble grumble
U-Man
ParticipantCool. I’m fighting drooping eyes while looking through the files. I might have to finish this tomorrow.
