It seems to me some shots in the thread must be larger on one side than 600 pixels. If that’s permitted in these contests, I’d take advantage as it would make things easier.

My understanding is that a pic can be 640 px wide and up to 1100 px tall.

As always, there is a fuzzy 150-200-ish kb limit. (I keep mine below 140 kb)

OK. Got no problem with that. Other than the fuzziness. 🙂

I have a question about the ‘Not Posed’ bit in the description. I understand why it’s there. But it might be one of those impossible-to-police issues.

To me, ennuipoet‘s example pic looks posed. But it also totally fits this theme. I have no problem if he uses it. But if that one is OK, then others like it would be OK too. Right?

/btw – none of my three run into this issue. I’m just trying to get ahead of any hurt feelings.

//am I beating a dead horse? Was this already talked about?

I have no idea what all this means, but it does show that for me these contest are enlightening. So thanks to all you fine people for pushing themes I don’t find comfortable. I would never have taken some of the photos I have today if I hadn’t been trying to meet the contest criteria.

That’s why I like farktography. Despite the interaction with some really quircky folks. <3

    😉

Nice work, Escher. So, what did you figure out about the extreme dof? Manual focus with tight aperture?

Thanks. I didn’t figure anything out. Life got in the way. I have the broken mirror set aside though. I’ll try it sometime.

I have a few photo ideas I really, really want to try. I have all the parts and pieces – now I just need to carve the time out….

AAAAACK! I had a little chest pain trying to decide which ones to use tonight.

    What do I like best?
What do I think you will like best?
Which of the above carries more weight?

It actually stands to reason that you’d have better luck with a p&s because the sensor is so small that it has a much deeper inherent DOF. This is why I tend to do my bug porn with the macro mode on my p&s. f/5.6 or f/8 has a loooooot more DOF than f/5.6 or f/8 on my 30D with any lens.

    Ahhhh. You so sneaky.

One thing that Olavf’s example has that my attempts didn’t is distance from the camera. Here is a version of my daughter that I don’t think that I will use.

That broken mirror is 5 inches on a side. I used my 100 mm macro, f/2.8. I might try it with a different lens and tighter aperture.

I have a similar self portrait that I might use.

Yep. Like that one moon shot we discussed.

    Stacked images perhaps?

Yeah. That would probably work. It reminds me of my experience with taking pics of the moon. You can’t get the near foreground and moon in focus at the same time.

How much DoF would I gain by cranking the aperture smaller? I might play with that tonight.

Y’know those pics you have seen of the image in a broken mirror? I have a feeling that the ones where both the mirror and the subject are in focus contain a bit of Photoshoppery.

    Example – http://www.pollsb.com/photos/o/89606-broken_mirror.jpg

Congrats pal, and welcome to the Ultraness! As a guy who has been there for a little over a year, well… I pretty much consider myself the Mayor of Ultra Farktographers. I’m sure that most others do too. So I’m hereby presenting you with the Key to the Farktography Universe! Maybe it will help you to win one of these contests. Maybe.

🙂 I had heard you were the king or the emperor or something.

    I’ll just keep trying until I do. I think I can, I think I can…
