ParticipantI honestly don’t know what the numbers are for Fark in general, but looking at the past usually helps illuminate the present.
When do we see the most (numerically) creative people come out of the woodwork and produce? When people are confident and the future looks bright – Italian Renaissance, Jazz Age, Housing Bubble of the 2000s. Creative people don’t shut down when times are tough, but it seems like people are forced to spend a bunch of that creative reserve making ends meet, or their souls get worn out observing misery. I don’t give a shit what the stock market does… the economy’s still in the dump for many Americans (and other global citizens). Until somebody besides the bankers begins to feel optimistic and hopeful for the future, I honestly believe that peoples’ creativity will continue to take a hit. Most of our great Depression art was commissioned by the government. As much as I have a problem with the long-term results of the New Deal, the Federal Artists’ Project and Federal Writers’ Project within the WPA allowed creative people to create with some measure of security. I’m not suggesting America (or any other nation) needs to be providing financial assistance, but the point is that I think things will turn around, but only after somebody besides Wall Street begins to feel the “recovery.”
In short, we’re in a national creativity deficit, and only when things look financially brighter will we see an uptick in participation in amateur art (that takes more than a quick pass through Instagram and that requires more effort than Facebook).

ParticipantI’m with fluffybunny on a lot of points. I’ve tried to get local RL friends/acquaintances to check us out, and I can’t seem to get much response.
I also get the whole “Fark is dying” argument, because the photoshoppers have been feeling that way for a while now. Frankly, I think Drew needs to write another book 😉As for making this a more going concern, I also like the idea of staplermofo‘s that we host some open-ended photo threads here and try to get some traffic to them. I may not have his appreciation for obtuse themes, but I like the idea. We already have a Gallery section, but that’s for individuals to do one-offs (usually) or continuing things (caradoc‘s kid thread for one). A second forum of open-ended themes would be easy to set up (I think… I don’t actually know) and would allow us to contribute whenever we found something particularly awesome that isn’t won’t be on Fark for a while/ever.
Anybody here got more DeviantArt experience than I? I have a profile, but that’s mainly to be able to see stuff anonymous users can’t. If there were some way to get a Farktography presence we might get some traffic from there as well.
Just a few ideas. As with Fark, and Misfit Squirrels, I’ll be around like foot fungus until they turn out the lights. The atmosphere around here agrees with me.

ParticipantemiliogtzBy “on-camera flash”, do you mean the built in one, or any attached to the camera?
As mentioned elsewhere, I got a camera mounting bracket, and so I at l east look a little more professional when I use that.

ParticipantIf I don’t think of something before you see something at goodwill or a flea market that makes you say “orionid might like that” and is less than $10, then your choice is obvious.
So… anything old and camera-related?
Anything else I should be keeping my eye out for?
(We garage sale/flea market/rummage sale pretty regularly, so we always have a list for more than a few people of things to keep an eye out for.)Yugoboy
ParticipantGoddamit so much…
Looks like I’m going to be working at 1024×768 for a while… the bulb in my laptop monitor just took a major poop tonight, and I had to pull out an old CRT monitor to attach to it.
I guess I know what I want for my birthday now… an LCD monitor… I’m hoping to keep this thing going for another year or two so I can get a nice nice tablet. Might not be possible, however…

ParticipantNo problem rav.
I figured there’d be competition and the shots would be broken up. When I saw what I had done, I went ahead and posted the two I already had ready. My original intent was to post yours early and then post mine in the 9:00 hour so I’d have them all posted together. It’s one of the few things I like about being a ‘liter.
It’s the being forced to wait until midnight every week that sucks (but only sometimes, because usually I’m up at midnight anyway).Yugoboy
ParticipantI may be out shooting astrophotography later; conditions are looking good. Can I get an OBO?

ParticipantI’m in!
Diet Mountain Dew can with Nikon mount.
Oh yeah… my birthday’s in under 2 weeks 😉
I haz me an Earth Day Birthday!
(True fact, but please please please don’t rush it. It’s a freebie, so take your time. You’re being very gracious here, and I certainly don’t want to abuse that.)(Let me know what I can do for you… I’m first in line, and yet I know I haven’t done something nearly as nice for you… You definitely get some free beverage if you ever get up my way, or I get down there.)

ParticipantThere is always Honey Brown Lager in the fridge.
But it keeps company with whatever dark, sweet, brew I have gotten recently. If I’ve been to Canada in the recent past, there’s going to be Upper Canada Dark Ale hanging around.
I’m a beer snob, and although Guiness is good, as far as I’m concerned it’s a starter brew 😉
When I stopped at F.X. Matt brewery a few weeks ago, where they make Saranac and Lake Placid brands, I got some Lake Placid Nippletop (named after one of the 46 High Peaks) milk stout. I love milk stouts. I don’t find them around often enough at prices I’m willing to pay.
I could go on about various beers I love for a long goddam time. I guess my go-to answer is Honey Brown. Price is right and it goes down smooth in all weather.

ParticipantIf you could PM me some details (like company info, or anything I might be able to present to someone) I’d be all about it for events here. We’ve got no “real” major leagues, and now Class A NCAA schools, but we’ve got a TON of minor league stuff going on in this town. Pretty much every sport but auto racing has some sort of team here.
The parking people somehow skipped me this year, and I didn’t call them soon enough, so as of opening day (today) I am not getting in for free to the Red Wings. Hopefully I’ll get a call soon, but I would totally be about doing what you’re doing for the same reasons you’re doing them.

ParticipantSorry… just got through the busiest few days I’ve had in a long while where being at school wasn’t a part of my day. Today I was in Albany (200+ miles away) for a thing. But now I’m home and school re-starts Monday, so all will go back to its usual level of chaos.
FWIW – I’m hoping to put together a “What I Did On Spring Break” mini collection in the Gallery forum, as I have done a metric-butt-load of shooting this week, because a significant part of being to busy to hop on-line has been a lot of being many miles from home, with me and my camera and my wife (she’s gotten to calling my camera my “girlfriend” and I’m ok with that.)
Ohhh… right… Elsinore PM’d me. I’m assuming she’s right. I can’t believe I did that, but if the pictures are that close, then they’re the same. I didn’t do a lot of shooting for HDR in Italy, so even though I took over 100 Pompeii shots (would have been more, but the tour was only a couple/few hours long), no two are that similar.

ParticipantSomebody supposedly named Eeek! sponsored me for a month of T-Fark. I tried to say thank you, but when I went to look at the profile for an email address, there apparently was no such user (tastes like chicken).
If you’re reading this Eeek!, thank you!
If you know who Eeek! is, please say thank you to them for me.

ParticipantI love this question. I’ve been sharing my photos with my school, and I format them as desktop size. (Hence the watermark.) I’ve been getting great responses.

ParticipantA couple B’s:
Coin wrappers, does anyone still use these let alone change any more?
Hell yeah! We save all our change in a big old glass jug. Every couple years we dump it out, wrap it up, and take the cash with us on vacation or just a major road trip. A couple hundred bucks of basically found money.
I would be totally into doing the Canada thing and ditching paper $1s and going to dollar and 2 dollar coins. It’s a more fiscally prudent method, but Americans aren’t known for making common sense decisions (metric system, anyone?)

ParticipantUnless it gets pushed to July, I’m unlikely to get anything more than I have now. So… whatever.
