That’s cool. Her sister’s staying home, so it’s just gonna be us, a chicken, the dogs and cats, football, and something from Redbox. Gonna try to avoid stress, and possibly sobriety.

Given my dislike of most traditional Thanksgiving foods, I don’t mind at all.

Good shots guys. I’m waaaay too stung out over a very farked up Thanksgiving (which is getting worse by the day) to get out and shoot. I hope I can get something done for next week as I’m leaving on Tuesday and won’t be back till Sunday (If I don’t throw myself off a cliff)

    In all seriousness:
Tell the family that’s got you all wound up to do it themselves this Turkey Day and come to our place. My parents are going on a cruise with my mom’s (mostly retired and can afford it) siblings, so it’s just my wife and I. Her sister *may* be joining us.
If you are in any way interested in my offer (and I am totally serious) PM me, and we’ll talk.

My wife and I understand family driving you to the edge. (It’s why I haven’t mentioned her family until this moment.)

    FWIW – I didn’t take offense to anyone’s comments.

I figured it was pretty late in the game to change anything officially, so leaving it alone was OK, too. Somebody (it’s not even 7am, I’m not scrolling back up to see who) mentioned that it had been hashed out in the original Themes forum thread, so when these questions popped up at the last minute I was a bit surprised but tried to respond as best I could.

I haven’t yet checked on the thread since I posted at midnight, so I do hope everyone who was worried is less so, and their pics get a plethora of votes. What I saw last night was pretty nice – up to our usual standards of awesome, I thinks.

Take this post for what you will. After this, I’ll let mods and voters sort it out.

Thing is, though: most farktography participants don’t visit these forums much if at all. So the final word on what goes or not has to be the actual theme description, not a post in this forum. And as worded that’s a lot broader than what you’re suggesting here.

I know. If we delete the phrase “as long as it’s owned by government” and take out the Sewer Department example, the rest should sort itself out, I think. Leave “has some government purpose” and the other examples.

    Sound about right?

I don’t exactly want to stifle creativity, but also… the government owns a goddam lotta stuff. Where to draw the line?

I kinda thought this theme would be an interesting way to look at those buildings where the people who make, execute, and judge the laws do their thing.

The three basic branches of government trickle all the way down to Tinytown, America, although in some places they’re smushed into the same building (which is in itself telling and interesting). I got a traffic ticket in a small town in NY one time and when I went to “court” it was the meeting hall in the DPW building. (Worked out OK… got it dismissed).

I’m open to liberal interpretations of the theme, but (as the songwriter once wrote) you can’t be “so open-minded your brains fall out.”

I may be “lucky” in that I live in a reasonably large community where I’ve got not just my town, but a number of towns, villages as well as a city, and that city’s large enough to have a federal building and a federal court house. People in a state or federal capitol will have even more options. People in Tinytown, America may have to archive dive or be creative in the way they shoot town hall, police station or the court building. It might be interesting to go inside the building, I know interiors can have merit as well. An empty court room, city council chambers or clerk’s office may have artistic value.
One of mine is City Hall from the large city I live next to and work in, one’s the Court House from a much smaller city a half hour away where Susan B. Anthony was tried for illegal voting, and the last is Rome’s (modern and current) City Hall.

Take this post for what you will. After this, I’ll let mods and voters sort it out.

plus there’s not really anywhere to stop and shoot except for physically pulling onto the narrow shoulder with questionable legality.

Get yourself a couple orange cones, keep them in your trunk, and when you need to, park and deploy them. Pop the hood and do your shooting. I actually swiped a lone cone from road-side for this purpose, but haven’t yet done it. The purpose for which I want to use it hasn’t re-curred (there’s some picturesque declining factory towns along the NYS Thruway… haven’t been back to Albany in too long).

I disagree. The transitions not linear enough. It’s much more likely to be from a tilt-shift lens angled to narrow the DoF vice expanding it.

I’ll take your word for it.
A good photoshopper with an eye to detail won’t make his transitions linear either. Compensation will be made for objects standing upright in the focal range, but your answer makes more sense from a pure photography perspective. (Especially seeing’s how after another inspection there don’t seem to be any artifacts leftover from cutting layers out. Although a really good ‘shopper takes care of those as well.)

That #2 picture just can’t be a real photograph. No freaking way.

Could be; imagine 30 seconds, with the lightning flash at the last.

I figure the NG guys have some sort of vetting process to figure these things. And it’s not farktography–tonemapping and such area-specific corrections aren’t disallowed.

    But yeah–pretty friggin’ incredible shot.

#9’s definitely Photoshopped. The shot is real, but the DOF’s been intentionally monkeyed with to produce that effect. Most anybody over at Misfit Squirrels can do that kind of pixel mangling… gotta have the right image, first, however.

I’ve only been with this community a short while, but I gotta say the amount of kowtowing in here’s astounding.

These are awesome shots, but a number of us can and have done stuff as good as many of them. One advantage some of these people had was opportunity: the Dubai shot was definitely in part right time tight place, and a number of the exotic locations are just that. If we were there, many of y’all would take similarly excellent images. When I saw the 2 monkey shots, I noticed that they were both black and white, and that ennuipoet‘s gorilla image was just as good. I don’t know how many of you have underwater rigs/gear, but if you did, I’d certainly expect shots as good as the ones they’ve got here.

Give yourselves more credit. These are great pics, but you guys do great work, too. Similarly great work.

    Okay, more grey-area hairsplitting.

    *clip*

My thinking is places where governing happens. City Hall, Statehouse, Court House, Capitol Buildings, Governors’ Mansions, White House, etc. Buildings may be retired (i.e. Old State Capitol in Springfield IL which would have been demolished if Lincoln hadn’t served there).

It should be obviously a government building for the purpose of governing. Fire Halls, Police Stations/Precincts also qualify.

Given how freakin’ much the government actually owns, it’s gotta be limited or it’d be open to just about anything.

Trust me, this ain’t due to me having some sort of winning photo. My entries are ok, but not great. Looking forward to seeing how y’all accomplish this.

i’m thinking of visiting some small towns nearby in southern MS tomorrow. you know, with the courthouse on the square. i really really hate it that i’m a bit concerned.

Having spent significant vacation time in the south 4 of the last 5 years, I don’t know why you would be. Those guys have never been anything other than “meh” when they notice me at all. And I’m a long-haired dude with NY plates on my wife’s truck. It’s not like I fit in real well, but I’ve never been hassled, and I shoot just about everything.

I got more grief at a local museum (not much) than I have anywhere in the south.

K Street lobbying firms probably don’t count as government buildings do they?

Why not, they own the government.

    No… they own the lawmakers…

Serious question (because my creative side is squeezing out):

Tritych format must be same size pics side by side?
Or can I be more creative (like having an inset image or something)?

I’m guessing the former, but if the latter is cool, I got some ideas I really want to play with.

Man, now I really wish I had some pics of an aztec pyramid that I could work up into a triptych for this contest. It would be the ultimate farktography in-joke.

Ummm… not Aztec, but I got some Mayan pyramids I got to climb a few years ago. If allowable I’d dig ’em up and use ’em… unfortunately, not alive… 🙁

(BTW – if you want to be able to climb and enter and generally interact with Mayan architecture, you gotta get off the beach and away from Tikal and Chichen Itza. Sure it’s a couple hours inland, but oh so worth it.)

And on the note of not finding b/w film, mods,–is it okay to take pictures with b/w in mind, then scan them as such, or is that going too far from ‘film’. I just shot a roll that I’d envisioned in b/w until I found nobody carries it (except one shop too far away to drive to). I shot it anyway.

    B/W conversions are always fine.

My opinion differs from orionid’s. I think the spirit of the theme is pretty strict.

But, honestly and truly, it’s just an opinion. And it’s not even a strong one, at that.

When I took photography as a vocational course, we learned how to convert color to B&W in the darkroom. Requires a stack of contrast filters. It can and has been done for nearly as long as film’s been around.
