ParticipantDoh, completely forget about virtual machines and the like, goes to show how far behind the curve I am these days.

Participantzoom + crop = bug eyes.

Hoping to get a few more weeks of decent wild flowers for my hiking/biking trip on the 14th-16th.

ParticipantCanon Extender EF 2x III and a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, which together are my astrophoto line-up.
My coworker just bought that lens. A beautiful piece of glass. He apparently ended up with a chunk of change left over after he totaled his car and bought a new truck, so he decided to ‘one up’ both of the other photo guys at the office (me and my other coworker who got me into the DSLR). Went from a mid-range P&S to the Canon 7D, 50mm 1.4 and the 70-200 2.8L. Think I’ll wait a year and see if he’s in the mood to sell for a song. Not exactly my idea of a hiking lens though!

ParticipantThat’s a pretty good price point to aim for for secondary-machine laptop. The last one I bought (which I’m typing on now) I bought shortly after finishing college, so it still got a lot of use then. Since then, I usually use it to browse online and such while traveling on vacation or more often than not, watching TV in the family room. The main beef I have with this machine right now is how sluggish it is coming out of hibernation or a start up. 3gig of Ram on a dual core 1.6ghz should be more than enough.
New box is going to be the new i5 3570k, ASUS MB with the new Z77 chipset, 16gigs of DDR3, SSD boot drive, nVidia 550Ti video, and a 1TB data drive, running Win7. I keep thinking of trying another dual boot setup to play with some Linux setups, maybe the old hardware that’s getting moved to the ‘Bike Cave’.

ParticipantNew machine (parts) ordered from Newegg today. The laptop, like Yoyo, is also showing it’s age as well. But I think instead of a new machine, think I’ll finally chunk Vista like I should have long ago and go back to XP on this thing. Hopefully that’ll give me a bit more use out of it after I disassembled it a few weeks ago to replace to power port. That or I’ll just buy a cheap netbook or something for the times I need mobile computing.

ParticipantGrats on the win farktographer, a worthy shot indeed.

ParticipantSomewhere I have a photo of the Enterprise (fairly sure it was the Enterprise) landing after a non-orbital test flight. Had it hung in my bedroom at home for years before I moved out. I don’t think this is the exact frame, but looks very similar:

ParticipantCan I mix RAID? ie a standard boot drive with redundancy or acceleration on the storage?
Depends on the motherboard, but usually yes.
I work at a Microsoft shop, thus most everything is Microsoft based, but I use chrome for web browsing and IE only for development. IE7 wasn’t bad, IE8 was bad for older computers but has improved, and I’ve heard decent things about IE9 being ‘close’ to as fast as Chrome. Used FFox for a while, but got tired of the semi-weekly updates.
As far as OS goes, I’m still on XP Pro both here at home and at work, but I’m about to build a new box with Win7 on it, and also going to a Win7 box at work. I previewed 7 back before release, thought it was a vast improvement on Vista, but wasn’t a reason to change from XP at the time and my current box has been humming along decently well since then. But it’s time for an upgrade, Lightroom and a few other programs I use frequently as starting to show how long in the tooth this machine is. Most of the parts are getting moved into the ‘Bike Cave’ computer.

ParticipantThose are amazing. I really must visit Alaska some time soon.

ParticipantI’ve had no end of grief with uploaders in general. Part of that’s my fault for being a Linux weenie, I guess. Work uses IE, and I’m one of the few upgraded to IE7 (newest available behind the firewall); most are still on IE6.
I’ve always thought it was pretty poor planning to base a large portion of your employee/database interface on a web browser that breaks standards. Every time we upgrade we have to re-tool all of our websites enterprise-wide, and we’ve got a farking huge intranet; all tied into one database or another… old UNIX stuff, mainly, but if you can name a database package from the past 30 years, you can bet we’re using it for something. 😆
Wow. I work in Corporate Real Estate software, all web based, and we’ve pretty much said “IE7 is dead, IE8/9 compatibility only”. //thread-jack.

ParticipantSilverStag, maybe a bit late, but certainly on target. Love all three entries.

ParticipantGood points on the laptop. I’ll probably just get a room in Mineral Wells at a hotel or something so I can have A/C. Never know what the hell the texas spring has in store for you by mid-may. May have a companion on the mineral wells trailway trip, another photographer/cyclist I know from bikeforums.net, either way, should be a good trip. 2 nights is the plan, wake up monday drive out that way, spend all of Mon/Tues/most of wed out there, drive home wed night. And then continue my computer free week as much as possible when I get home thurs/fri somehow. Ride my bike/hike around these parts, take a drive in the truck, etc. That’s the plan anyways.
any misspellings the result of rum… lots of rum this evening.
