They’re basically the same thing in different stages of life, fluffy. schnee created FSM about 5 years ago I think and it was running great until the last Fark page redesign when it broke. schnee now understandably has other priorities that demand his attention so FSM is now more of a historic reference, at least for the time being.

FSM was one of the things that drew me to Farktography and made it fun for me. Being a programmer myself, I liked the challenge of “rolling my own” version of it and also wanted to play with some of the data myself, so I wrote a scraper that watches the contests and gathers various statistics. Later, I created Bibliostats to publish some of the results of that. Bibliostats is in its infancy in that there are a lot of reports and charts and other features that I’ve got planned for it, but my work schedule has been quite demanding this year, so I haven’t had as much time as I’d like.

As far as more technical differences, I’d refer you to the Bibliostats FAQ thread, or if there’s anything in particular you’d like to know, I’d be happy to answer.

Congrats to gambitsgirl for the individual first and to U-Man for the combined first. The Weekly Reports post has been updated with the latest stats.

Did someone say “slump”? I’ve fallen off all of the quarterlies except for avg place where I’m barely hanging on. Sigh. Wish I had more time but no letup in the foreseeable future. Of course, it doesn’t help that we’ve had a few newcomers bringing their A games (oddmind, aspidites, looking at you two…) 😉

So is this is a photography training seminar or just a gathering to shoot a specific site or …? Sounds awesome and like a great way to exchange ideas either way, congrats!

    OK, now that was funny!

// What region of NC are you in? I spent 5 years in Wilmington and 11 years in Raleigh. I really liked Raleigh and would still be there if I could’ve convinced all of my and my wife’s families to move out there instead of vice versa.

Definitely the first version. It gives more “context” to the shot.

gambitsgirl, don’t worry about it, your lead is still earned. Oftentimes, the story behind the shot is an integral part of its appeal. I can recall off the top of my head at least two other times where the details of the shot contributed strongly to its success – rav‘s Dirty Pictures win (where we needed to know that it was the aftermath of a dam break) and U-Man‘s Day in the Life win where his conversation with the newspaper lady set the tone of the shot. And I’m sure there have been many others.

The details you provided for it add poignancy and personalize it, neither of which are bad things.

I personally like them and think they’re well done overall and well lit in particular, but I’m far far from a portraiture expert. I do find the wrist light to be distracting though, but whatever the customer wants…

I believe Rufus Lee King has 5 entries starting at 2011-10-27 09:37:11 am.

    He now has seven…

gambitsgirl, now that the thread’s gone public, I can see what the talk here was about. I’m so sorry for your loss. I don’t think I’d have the strength to soldier through this contest after that considering the timing, so bravo for your courage.

Yay, I just love it when Fark decides to change up the page layout! NOT.

Sorry for the late start, Fark decided to start inserting a place marker for non-votable comments even when “Hide nonvoting comments” is checked which resulted in the scraper balking at the changed layout, which meant a last-minute emergency fix.

How long before it’s open to us hoi polloi?

Us liters get to join in at midnight Farkistan time, bandy.

I’m with U-Man in that I’ve yet to lose anyone close to me. My maternal grandparents are still with us and recently celebrated their 85th (hers) & 90th (his) birthdays, so I know it’s coming sooner than later, but I don’t like to think about it.

I do have a close friend who lost his wife in her late 30’s to cancer a few years ago, and I can relate a story of his use of humor to alleviate grief. She was cremated and when he went to pick up her ashes, he said to the staff there that he remembered her being much taller. The way he described it, the look on their faces was pretty much this: 😯

The only parameters I’d question are fill light and vibrance. I’m not sure what exactly those do. The others are all pretty standard and have direct equivalents in your accompanying DSLR manufacturer’s software for RAW-to-JPG conversion (or at least Canon does; I’d guess Nikon does, too). I personally consider those part of the “developing” process for digital images.

That said, I don’t have a problem with the processed image and I’d likely not even have thought about the manipulations performed on it had I not seen the original, aside from possibly wondering how you did the vignetting.

I use Canon’s Digital Photo Professional to tweak my RAW images and export to JPG. Sometimes (rarely) the resulting JPG is still too large even at the lowest quality setting and in that case, I export to TIFF and then use Paint.NET to save to JPG.

Uranus, I certainly see no problem with that at all, especially if it was across the whole image. It’s been mentioned before that even spot contrast adjustments are usually OK as they’re the equivalent of dodging and burning.
