Congrats to Ranger Joe for the win and to kashari and SilverStag for the tie at 1st in total votes.

We had some weather come through last night, which was good for the rain, but it knocked out internet & phone for several hours. The result is that there’s a huge spike in the voting charts at about 5:15am, which is the accumulation of votes from when the power first went out.

Here are the sliding quarter top ten lists this week.

olavf, that minigun was amazing. It sounded more like an engine purring than a gun firing and since they were firing them in 50-round bursts, it was over before you really knew it had started.

orionid, the targets were the best part. They had lots of old appliances and a big piile aside that they’d refresh the field with during cease-fires. They also loaded the cars with tannerite and had bullseyes in front of it so it’d explode if you hit it there, which is why you see them in flames (that and the tracer rounds some were firing just might’ve had something to do with the grass fires).

For the Kill The Car competition, they chain the car up the hill and then a sniper shoots an explosive to split the chain, allowing the car to roll down the hill. Meanwhile, most every gun on the firing line is aimed at the car, waiting for it to roll past a specific spot at which point everyone opens fire. It sounded like a WWII movie complete with a huge explosion from all the tannerite they had in the car. I’ve got some video of it but I don’t have anything that’ll handle Canon’s weird 720p video format to convert it for the web.

Which one’s the MK 60? Did you shoot it full auto?

Yep, that link works fine. And a quite nice shot it is. Is that your new photography company name? Don’t think I’ve seen that on any of your shots before.

Amphibians are cool, though, right? I’m thinking about using this one: https://plus.google.com/photos/113330053950020592701/albums/posts/5631668674755023986

That link takes me to a wall of photos, none of which had an amphibian that I could see at first glance. But, as long as it’s not a pet frog (or otherwise named “hopkin green frog” ;)), I think it’s fine.

    olavf, I think so, too.

Zero, as long as they’re not caged, that’s fine. I have a few “wild animals in my backyard” that I plan to use.

The intended meaning of class wasn’t in the strict biological sense, but rather meant to imply that wild versions of domesticated animals were OK.

Having said that, I’m wondering if we should amend the description to remove the list of specifics (dogs…etc.) and perhaps even remove the “of any class.” As the theme suggestor, I’d be OK with shortening it to just “Photos of wild animals. Difficulty: No farm or domestic animals and no pets.”

Niiice, Zero. Looks beautiful. Definitely on my list of places I’d like to see. The “Capilano Cliffwalk” looks really cool.

While I agree that it’s wasted space right now, the Nav Menu Placeholder will eventually get replaced with something like the image below. It’s just a mockup and not styled properly, but that’s the general idea. The Gallery section will show 3-4 random shots that will change every 30 seconds or so. I also hope to be able to make it horizontally collapsible (like a toolbar) so that it will shrink to a small bar on the left if desired.

As for the horizontal scrollbar, that’s due to the minimum width that I’ve set in the content section. It’s designed to be able to show a minimum of 4 thumbnails horizontally. I can look at shrinking that to 3 and see if that’ll get it within a 1280 screen size. My “problem” is that I’ve got dual 1920×1200’s, so I sometimes don’t consider the smaller screen size issues. 😉

I had a little free time tonight, not enough to do anything major, so I decided to tackle a couple of quick requests.

For orionid, the sort by & paging filters are now duplicated on the bottom of the contest & user pages to prevent having to scroll home to page.

For SilverStag, there’s a new “sort by” type of “Post Time” on the user page. This displays all entries for a user by post time with only the contest name. The default page size is 48 entries, but of course “All” will display everything on one page.

Interesting, but I think I’m missing something on the setup. If I understand your setup correctly, you’re using the lens to project the image of the flower onto the tissue paper that’s wrapped around the end of the middle cardboard tube, lighting it from the front using the flash. Where’s the camera go, though? I assume it would have to take the image from the other side of the tissue paper (the inside of the middle tube)?

Also, it sounded like from some of their descriptions, that they (others in the flickr group) were projecting a negative onto the textured surface and then photographing that from behind, which sounds like more of a traditional use of a projector, whereas your setup would let you photo anything in front of the lens.

It was down for a brief while for me, too. About 4 minutes total.

Oh, and bees are here for anyone who hasn’t already seen them.

Alternatively, we need a way to enter a URL to see if it comes up in some kind of a Scarlet R search.

That’s actually on my short list of to-do’s, SilverStag. As for the other, I could possibly add something like an “Unformatted” sort order that would do what you’re looking for. I’ll add that to the list.

Wow is that a nice shot, rav! Please give us fair warning when you find the contest to enter that one in. 😉
