ParticipantTurns out she graduated in ’82 and didn’t recognize your brother’s name.
Brad Priest sounds really familiar. Was he a wrestler? I’m thinking he was a friend of my brother who graduated in ’86 (I graduated in ’80). I know I’ve heard the name before. I’ll have to ask my parents.

ParticipantThanks, soosh! I just started at the top of the voting results page (as it was at that time) and grabbed the top entries that I needed. Good luck with the alphabet – as I found, there are a few letters missing or in scarce supply. Do post what you come up with, though.
Regarding Tulsa, we’ve discussed it briefly before (I think in the thread about shooting one of the meteor showers), but I grew up in & attended Bixby from K-12, then went to TU. In ’86 my (then future) wife and I moved to NC where we spent the next 16 years aside from a brief stint in Arkansas. Finally got tired of spending all of our vacation time to come see family so we moved back to Tulsa in ’02 and have been here since. I currently live in south Tulsa in kind of a gray zone – Jenks phone prefix, Tulsa address, and Bixby schools.
You’d mentioned in the previous thread that you went to Memorial. My wife graduated there in ’83 (I think; +/- 1 year). What took you to Alaska? I’d love the wilderness aspect of it, but I’m not sure I could hang on the cold.

ParticipantI’ll never forget the look of worry and concern on a mom & dad when their son opened the gift my son had been really happy about picking out for him. It was an army jeep and a couple of GI Joes in fatigues. My kid was going through a big stage where he thought army men were cool. The parents recoiled like we’d given the kid bourbon and lucky strikes.
Funny, and I know exactly the kind of parents you’re talking about. I taught a church scouting program with a guy that tried to talk the boys out of making faux guns from Legos during playtime. He was not successful and eventually gave up.

ParticipantI’d be up for it. There’s nothing in my stats scraper that prevents more than 3 votables and I’m almost certain that FSM doesn’t care either. The downsides are that it might limit the casual entrants and almost certainly cause some policing headaches from those who don’t read the rules and just throw one or two out there.

ParticipantPretty much what Farktographer said. Don’t worry at all about taking pictures, everyone’s going to expect it and it’s your son’s party. I shot pictures of all of my son’s football games last year and posted them on my website. I never asked anyone’s permission (other than the coach to be on the field) and I never got any complaints. Quite the opposite – lots of parents expressed appreciation for making the shots available for them to send links to their friends & relatives.
As long as you’re not using them for profit or otherwise exploiting them, I think you’re entirely in the clear. And if anyone has a problem with you photographing their child, I suspect they’d be the kind of person to let you know about it right away, if you know what I mean.

ParticipantWow, thanks again everyone, I’m seriously flattered by Mopsy‘s suggestion for the book, but really all I did was combine others’ work. If you wanted to do something like that for the book, I’d suggest passing out letters to those who have entries in the book and then picking the best of those. I’d be happy to help assemble those into a montage if needed, but really anybody with rudimentary PS (or equivalent) skills could do that.
Now if you want to use it for a site banner, I’d be totally cool with that.

ParticipantThanks everyone. Glad you enjoyed it.
From now on, I’m going to e-mail my ransom notes using this technique.
Note to myself: Remove owner info from EXIF data… 😉

ParticipantThanks! I was really just curious as to whether assembling a word would be readable. I think for the most part it is.

ParticipantFor gits & shiggles (as chupathingie put it), I decided to assemble some of our letters into a word:

Letters were taken as they appear in the voting results page with the following exceptions:
* Some entries are cropped to make a consistent letter size
* I had to pull a K from my c-sides (yep, not even bees – it’s the top of a power tower on its side)
* Since no one entered any R’s, one R is from Kes‘s bees and the other is rav‘s B cropped at the bottom to make an RCauseISaidSo
ParticipantSome bees here. I was torn between my a-side “E” and my b-side “D”.

ParticipantYep, as long as it primarily represents a single element. Kestrana had the same question in the polling thread:
What exactly would qualify as air though? steam? windy trees? clouds? a bubble gum bubble or balloon?
And those are all good and valid ideas.

ParticipantDitto on the 500 errors. I’ve gotten at least two of them recently and loading is sporadically very slow (posting almost always is, but loading has previously been pretty quick).

ParticipantWelcome to the new mods and thanks again Els for all the time you must invest in this!

ParticipantVery nice shots all around, olavf. I’m thinking the shack shot would do nicely in Desolation…

ParticipantIs that a drunk ewok? 😆
