In an ideal world, everyone would fully understand the grayness behind “you must be the photographer” and know where the line is. In the real world, there are going to be people who take advantage of that grayness and push it to the line and beyond, which is why you need concrete black & white rules like “you must have pressed the button.”

Personally, I think this is kind of a don’t ask, don’t tell situation. Should Elsinore (or any of you) decide to enter a photo for which you did all of the prep work except pressing the button, I’d have no beef about it at all. The issues arise when it’s brought up for discussion and we try to explicity define that which we all intuitively know. Generally, you end up opening up several more loopholes when trying to tightly define a rule like that. I think it’s akin to the Supreme Court’s take on obscenity – there are no hard and fast rules on what defines it, but they know it when they see it.

I don’t know if I made sense with any of that, but that’s my two cents on the subject.

I’ve used LensRentals before and all went smoothly. It was a while ago and only once, but given that and the fact that I’ve never heard anything bad about them, I’d recommend them.

I still need a good T-Storm to test the sensor I made for my quaketronics trigger.

Well then, have I got the perfect location and time of year for you. The only problem is trying to find a good location to shoot that’s also not a good location to be struck.

Regarding this device, does it allow for other triggering mechanisms or is it bound to lightning? IIRC, I’ve seen devices like this that also have trigger inputs and adjustable timing delays so they could be used for doing high-speed photography like water droplets, things breaking, etc.

If so, I may be interested in one of these devices as well.

If the goal is to encourage participation and bring in new users, I’d say that would be better achieved through prizes awarded to a random participant each week, as opposed to one who placed high. From an outsiders standpoint, a prize for 1st isn’t gonna draw me in unless I’m pretty darn certain I’ve got a 1st-place entry. However, there are usually only 60-70 entrants in any given week, so a 1-in-70 chance of winning something just for entering would be more enticing, I’d think.

Congratulations, she’s a sweetie! Cherish these early years – it won’t be long before she’s dying her hair blue and moving to Chicago to go to school. Or at least that’s been my experience, YYMV. 😉

Well that’s why they have to do it. Cause I Said So.

Hey, it worked (mostly) for my kids. At least it stopped the incessant “Why?”‘s and “How come?”‘s.

Seriously, though, I’d sign a petition.

orionid, I’ve been having an issue with your entries sporadically not showing up the past couple of contests and I was finally able to capture a trace of it. Your server is returning HTML. It doesn’t happen every time nor with every entry, but I have seen it quite frequently the past two contests.

I tried several times to include the request/response in this message, but bbcode no likey, so here’s a link to a text file with the HTTP request & response.

It looks like your server is trying to tell the browesr to re-request the image again, but I’m not sure why. Has anybody else seen this with orionid’s entries?

I meant to comment on this earlier but forgot.

    1) I’m jealous of your shooting spree! I had a plasma TV go bad that I really, really wanted to shoot up, but had no place to drag it to. The shooting ranges round here tend to frown on that and I don’t know anyone with enough land outside city limits.

    2) Echoing what everyone else said, good job on the star trails, especially for shooting while buzzed. 🙂

Good idea in principle, but could lead to really bad results, I think. Both for the reasons orionid mentioned and also because there would now be motivation to “game” the system or even cheat.

However, if the prizes were to be awarded randomly, that could be a good thing – no motivation to game or vote-whore (any more than now), while encouraging more participation.

It’s too bad that you didn’t take it, ’cause that’s quite a groan-inducing pun of a title for it. 😆 I’d probably have to vote for it based on that alone.

    Here are two more:

I really like the first one of the second batch. It almost looks like the sheep are glowing.

Farktographer, you’ve gotta use BBcode to post pictures on the forum. You can read a bit about it here: http://www.farktography.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=faq&mode=bbcode

To insert an image into a post, use this syntax:

    [img]http://www.myimagelink.com[/img]

Except of course replace the link with your flickr URL.

Yep, congrats Ranger Joe/Cameraflage on an awesome shot. I think U-Man and I shared prognostic powers this week, because as soon as I scrolled past that one I thought the same thing – “That’s the One.”

Thanks Zero, and congrats to you, too. You did indeed have a good week as you & Ranger Joe tied for most combined votes at 69. I thought the coffee Q was quite clever. In general, I was surprised at how many Q’s turned up.

I’m quite thrilled with my 2nd as that was the last place I needed to fill in my top ten card. My life as a farktographer is now complete. 😉

While I certainly enjoyed this contest, the voters were pretty stingy this week as this is the 2nd lowest vote total since I started keeping detailed stats. Oh well, can’t please ’em every week, eh?

FYI, oh exalted gang of new mods ;), you wouldn’t think it would happen in this contest (and it doesn’t really affect anything), but there is a Scarlet R…

I’d probably tack on “for this contest only”, but if you’re space-limited on the description, that should be good as is.

mopsy, it’s based on Error403’s entry from the Five Is Right Out contest. You can see it full-size here: http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/2815/threeapples.jpg

He made that by placing the apples on the glass of a scanner, covering them with a cloth and then scanning them like you’d scan a printed photograph. So basically, it’s any image you can create by scanning objects, as long as it’s not just scanning a photo.
