I’m actually posting only one picture this week. I was out last week for Blur because I spent most of the day in bed with chills and sleeping (also being given NyQuil regularly by Hubby) and the day after went to the doctor and found out I had strep throat. I didn’t have anything anyway, but I probably could have scrounged for something. This week, it’s only the one. I wasn’t happy with snow scenes I got, but I got some of the tree (not using it because too much stuff on the walls, but will go in my scrapbooking anyway), and got quite a few frames of my favorite ornament that my Dad got me a couple of years ago. I picked the best frame (with Hubby’s help) and that will be my entry. I’d be less than enthused about anything else so I’m going with the one I really like and if I do poorly, so what, but if I get votes, cool. It’s a good shot anyway, and I’m actually excited to post it and am looking forward to the thread at midnight.

And Lily Margo (confirmed – 100% according to the doc) gave us a thumbs-up yesterday:

Congrats!

I did suggest this earlier, but perhaps someone who actually has the stuff available on hand could do it. http://www.lyrics.com/black-coffee-lyrics-ella-fitzgerald.html (lyrics)

Black Coffee – it’s an old jazz standard (another suggestion, actually, to look through those) that my vocal instructor kept trying to get me to sing. If I was setting it up, I’d have a cup of coffee and some cigarettes lying next to it, and possibly a woman drinking coffee looking out the window maybe with a cigarette in her hand or something along those lines. Only, we have no cigarettes or coffee in the house. I was going to do it at my parent’s this weekend, but they weren’t brewing any coffee and there was too much commotion and I forgot.

A couple of others I thought of needed alcohol (or at least alcohol bottles), not the 12-ouncers but fifths I think they’re called, but we’re not big drinkers and the only alcohol bottles we have are Parrot’s Bay rum (pineapple and coconut rum, actually) and they won’t fit the spirit of the songs (way too poor to even think about buying a big enough bottle of alcohol for this competition when we won’t even drink it afterward).

I plan on at least titling mine with the song titles, and if they want to look it up after that they can.

Silly question (sort of). do cadences count? I posed this to hubby and both he and his friend piped up with a particular one (that I need one item for, actually) but it’s a cadence they both did (Hubby was Army, Friend was ROTC and something about Marines and a screw up with medical records). Anyway, the lyrics/cadence in question has been around so long it’s a traditional now, but it was modified and put into song. So, do cadences count?

Well I’m not sure exactly what constitutes “artistic” but I’m going to go with at least two that I have. One I think is artistic because of how it came out (different view than normal mostly, but it’s a good shot) and another one I thought of after rav mentioned something somewhere, I forget what though. I love it because it is a pattern that plays with the eyes. Hopefully, they are artistic enough. I tried Vaseline on plastic wrap on the lens (have no filters yet so couldn’t use those) but I’m not entirely satisfied with the results. I might get more inspired after looking at what is posted.

I believe the spirit of the theme is to explore artistic styles one may not have considered before (bokeh, Vaseline on the lens, soft focus, blur, etc, just to name the few I can remember right now). At least that’s how I’m interpreting it. Instead of focusing on one artistic style, we get to choose which one we like and post one of those.

Personally, unless Hubby can find me filters (or fake filters), Ima gonna attempt to use plastic wrap and Vaseline to do that soft focus thing. I may head over to the Dodlin Road this weekend to see if I can’t get that wind turbine in action and get some blurring from that. Other than that, not sure.

I think those waterfall pictures with the dreamy/flowy water is pretty artistic, too, but that may not count.

though your Resident Critic seems like a hardass 😀

He is a hardass, but he’s mine. 🙂 And the silly/stupid/frustrating thing is that he’s right more often than I’d like to admit. The instruction that goes with this list is “The main element must come out in the picture. Example, photographing something or someone exciting must show that in the picture without any captioning or description.”

He says I don’t do this type of thing at all and that ^this is what I need to focus on. Apparently my pictures tend to not convey anything other than the object I’m photographing. He did say I don’t have to take them in order, which is nice. I’m more one for photographing things as they are, so I reckon I’ll have to set up for this more than I’d care to, most especially with lighting. However, I do want to get better at this, so I’ll just suck it up and do it. For now, I’m off to the store to get some foodses so I can be back before I need to start work.

I decided to make an A-Z list of things to photograph to start looking at things differently. I showed it to my husband and he said I was focusing on the wrong things and made me a different list. Thought I’d share it here, in case anyone is curious.

Airy
Bright
Clear
Depressing
Exciting
Fresh
Gross
Heavy
Iced
Jumping
Knobbly
Lively
Monotone
Nocturnal
Opulent
Precious to a child
Quiet
Revealing
Secluded
Timid
Unsafe
Voluptuous
Wire
Xanthic (a yellowish color, or a fair haired pale-skinned person)
Youthful
Zealous

He also said that if he didn’t like how they came out that he’d “throw it away” and tell me to do it again. Yeesh.

Not that I’m giving any of my ideas away, because I am with this, but I figured I’d lend a hand. A few working song titles that lend themselves to being somewhat easy to get/interpret:

Blue Skies (written by Irving Berlin)
Autumn Leaves (written by Johnny Mercer), and I’m aware of the timing with the Autumn contest the week prior
Black Coffee (performed by at least Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and I’ve been told Billie Holiday sang it, too)
Fever (performed by Peggy Lee)
Scotch and Soda (performed by Kingston Trio, also thought of Greenback Dollar by them as well)
Meat Loaf – You took the words right out of my mouth
Aqua – Aquarium (album name)
Aqua – Lollipop (Candyman), in the Aquarium album
Watermark – Enya (album name and title song)

Just a few, and that’s only what’s in my iTunes library that caught my eye. I haven’t gone through my sheet music for any other jazz standards as they seem to lend well to photographs from my perusing thus far.

And if you have something awesome to share with the class, I
think we’d all appreciate it. I haven’t worked on this one at all yet 😛
I hope that worked….
If it did, for the song “Splish, Splash” by Bobby Darin.

So literal interpretation of album/song title is ok? That’s about all I have to go on for the moment. Wasn’t sure I would have anything to go on, but my iTunes library is proving to have some interesting possibilities.

Came back to see if I had posted this only to find out I hadn’t hit submit, so I thought I’d add this:
Not to be premature, but I think I have at least one very apt photo. I *might* link it to share if I’m asked nicely. 🙂

So I have something to go by with this, what types of artistic styles could I use to get jump started on an idea? Only one my brain can come up with now is blur, but I have limited potential for that unless the rain stops. I’m rather flummoxed on this.

12 weeks. Already shaking fist at the ultrasound tech who “jiggled” her to try to get her turned for the profile image to check nuchal translucency.

The doctor gives us a 98% chance of having a girl. So, here’s Lily Margo:

Unless you’ve had genetic testing of the kiddo, unlikely you’d know at 12 weeks. Genitals don’t form until 17 to 20 weeks, and before then they all look like girls.

Any boy names picked out yet? Was hoping for a girl last time and we had Annabel for a first name (thought of possibly Lyra and River for middle names, but hadn’t settled). For our first, if it was a girl we wanted Lyra Tiana. We wavered forever on picking our boy’s name for the second until the month or so. Love Lily Margo though. I like the both names.

I usually post what I like anyway, but I mostly stay at the bottom of the pile. Only one has gotten top 10 (the one of Hubby with the bow and arrow hit 6/7th), one hit 11th (my flag picture), and my first penthouse picture hit 19th I think (or had 19 votes). The rest might get 5 or 6 votes, but typically get only 2 or 3. I usually don’t hold high hopes for my pictures.

I have a couple of really good Autumn shots I’m hoping will get some votes (have more than 3 possibles so the rest are B’s), and I know which outing I’m using for the next contest, but the two after that I’m thus far lost on and will hope to have some ideas by the time they roll around.
