ParticipantAre we talking buildings, equipment, or what here? The definition of industry is kind of vague (from Merriam-Webster) or rather open-ended I guess. Is that the point?
1: diligence in an employment or pursuit; especially: steady or habitual effort
2 a: systematic labor especially for some useful purpose or the creation of something of value b: a department or branch of a craft, art, business, or manufacture; especially: one that employs a large personnel and capital especially in manufacturing c: a distinct group of productive or profit-making enterprises d: manufacturing activity as a whole
3: work devoted to the study of a particular subject or authorsynonyms see business

ParticipantI was thinking of using it for a contest, but I couldn’t get it to come out right. I guess in darkness it shall be. Last night we had a small fire in our driveway (intentional and blocked off by cinder blocks) and I did a long-time exposure then with the embers and flames and it came out really pretty (sparks and everything). I’ll probably try it again, but later in the day, would be nice if it wasn’t raining. I’m not so sure the object would do well though as it doesn’t glow, but perhaps a couple of well placed far enough away lights could get it to sparkle enough. The gears are turning, that’s for sure.
Thanks for the help!

ParticipantDo they have to be current vices or can they be past vices? I’m asking because a lot of my things have gone digital and with no screenshots allowed (perfectly understandable), I planned on using some of the non-digital versions, though I think all of it turns into digital. Example (and I’m probably not the only one to think this, but) video games. Rarely do we buy them in disc any more. Actually, we get most of ours on Steam, so I was thinking about doing a spread of video games (mostly to all Hubby’s because I only recently started gaming), though the spread doesn’t have the names of the games available for the most part, they were hidden or covered (he didn’t want to advertise).
I guess I also have to ask for when is it a vice verses just a hobby?

ParticipantIt’s Friday morning, though late morning. I’m not entirely sure when exactly the voting closes, so I’ll probably check back once or twice more before the end of the day. Hubby’s taking our friend back home and picking up a few things “in town” and I plan on watching a movie and enjoying my weekend (Friday and Saturday normally).

ParticipantAwesome stuffs again. I’m feeling unoriginal in my choices, but I suppose it’ll be a while before I come up with unique things. That’s the point of practicing. Already working on the next theme. (I’ve sort of gone shutterbug-happy lately.) Hoping my shots stand on their own. Have plans for all day tomorrow, but will come back probably tomorrow night to be sure and look at and vote on the rest.

ParticipantThe camera’s a Kodak C340 (it’s not even made any more). I got it 3-1/2 years ago at my baby shower. It says it has a 34 mm to 102 mm (Equiv) AF 3x Optical. It’s a Kodak Retinar Aspheric All Glass Lens. I cannot adjust the f stops or the shutter speed. My ISO options are 80, 100, 200, 400 and Auto. My exposure compensations are -2.0, -1.5, -1.0, -0.5, 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. If I set it to long-time exposure (options are 0.7, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 seconds) it changes exposure compensation to Auto as well as ISO speed to auto.
Did I give too much information? I have the manual with me and camera with me. In SCN mode it tells me what the preset options are, down to the f stops, but I can’t change those at all.

ParticipantSo basically, I have to do a long time exposure in the dark or not during the middle of the day? I think my glasses should suffice for this (they’re Transitions) or picking up a cheapo pair of sunglasses from say Wal-Mart or something. Since I know that it has to be dark(er) for this to work, it makes it much easier to do. Thanks!

ParticipantWhile we were out and about today, I took the opportunity to look at some cameras that were on display. It gave me a rough idea of what to expect. Nothing like handling them, that’s for sure. I’m actually pretty split between the two, but Hubby said the Canon one seemed to fit better in my hands. I have small hands. Honestly though, I didn’t see any accessories or anything for these cameras, no lenses or anything, and if I’m going to get a new camera that I can put lenses on, I want to buy some lenses with it and filters, not just the body. I’ll do some extra digging and see if there isn’t an actual camera shop somewhere within, oh I dunno, 1000 miles of the place, though I’m doubt it since I live in the middle of nowhere (and I could go on).
On the plus side, I did get a tripod! I’ve never really used one before. Should be fun. Actually purchasing the camera will be a while though, lack of funds and all that. In the meantime, I’m keeping a camera shots journal of the settings I’m using and all that, so I can associate the shots I’m seeing with the settings and hopefully end up with more consistent and better results overall. I suppose the next thing would be a better camera bag so I can have the tripod in there, the notebook, the camera, extra batteries, etc. Oh, and the portable photo studio I plan on getting from ThinkGeek. This hobby is getting bulky…..

ParticipantI’m attempting to photograph something exceedingly shiny. My current question is this. I personally can see an engraving/logo on this objective. However, because of the shiny-ness and the reflectiveness, I can’t seem to take a picture of this and I’m reflected as well in this, albeit distorted. Any suggestions to get this to come out?
/yes, we polished this object.

ParticipantReally, really jealous of you right now. My Dad’s currently there (his sister lives there and some family). He comes back on Saturday. I’ve only been there twice but I absolutely love it and I’d go back in a heart beat. I didn’t really know much about photography then, and all I had was film and a camera I got to borrow from my parents with the display sort of half gone after a drop when they were in New Zealand or Australia. I’ll have to make him show me his pictures when he gets back. LOVE yours too. Brings back fond memories. Gorgeous country there. Absolutely gorgeous.

ParticipantI see so many REALLY cool pictures tonight (or maybe I’m easily impressed). In any case, from what I’ve seen I like it a LOT. I gave lots of votes (though not for my own, I’d like them to stand by themselves) because I really liked what I saw. I will make sure I’m back to it throughout the week or so to vote for new ones I see.

ParticipantThought I’d throw in links for the 3 I wanted to put in:

ParticipantWhat would define a different composition? I set up my lego scene, and tried to use different views. Some focus on the villagers with a bit of the dragon, some are zoomed out and show both dragons I made. I also took on two different days so there are differences (however small) also in the placement of some things. I was thinking of putting one up each with the views I described above (lego villagers and then more on the dragons). I also have a light one I did with letters and shadows, but Hubby doesn’t think it should be put in. He wanted me to ask in case it would disqualify me or something. Thanks.

ParticipantI have a question about this site, and I’m not sure where else to put it save for thread-jacking something else, so I’ll do that here instead.
Has anyone else had a problem getting on this site? For most of the day today and most of the day yesterday I haven’t even been able to pull up the welcome page, and then boom I get on and there are new posts. If others are okay with doing it, then something must be blocking it here, I’m sure. It happens both on this ‘puter and on my home ‘puter so I’m quite sure it’s not the stupid net filter that work has (I work from home and use a KVM), and our internet settings themselves haven’t been changed in months.
I’m probably just paranoid. It would actually say network timeout, that it was taking too long to respond and the browser stopped trying.

ParticipantSorry for the typo above, it should be Arts not arteries. Don’t ask how I can add an extra “erie” in there, but it’s part of how I do my job better (details somewhere else). I’ll keep an eye on the Hopper then and the other locations to see exactly what’s next, but I’m assuming the Hopper is the general gist of what is to be expected?
