My filters came today. Unfortunately, I also got a call early this afternoon from my supervisor informing me that I was being transferred to another supervisor and account because of the demand on that account, so I haven’t had a chance to play with them yet. I’ll try to carve out a bit of time tomorrow to do so, though. Since no one else is here, Chancellor will sleep, so I should be able to sneak out even for a few minutes, or even take him for a walk and try them out then. The pouch is nifty. 🙂

My husband’s 17 pound 8-inch diameter granite mortar and pestle came today as well, and that’s just begging to be photographed.

Did my brick picture show up? Or is it only on my computer?

I’ve opted to not try the 365 project, though I do like the idea and may do it later. I’m still working on that list of “things” I roped Hubby into making up for me to photograph. So far, only have one, though. It’s not an easy list. What have you noticed about your photography through the project and after?

    Gravel works pretty well, too.

Was walking back in October and saw this on the side of the road and immediately thought of this contest. I brought the brick home intending to do more with it, but Alex threw it out before I got around to doing anything with it.

Alright. Glad I asked. I hadn’t heard of most of the names available, and it seemed that NewEgg didn’t have what I was looking for with my lens size (58 mm). I only have the two lenses for now (18-55 and 75-300) and I don’t plan on getting any others for now. Hubby says that when he had his camera and stuff, he always kept a filter on it. If they still have the pack tomorrow, then I’ll go ahead and get it along with Hubby’s birthday gift so I can make one purchase. Glad I asked about the brand, and also glad it’s getting a good quality review here. I was particularly impressed with the review on Amazon by the optician (or ophthalmologist, I forget which) who says he likes the brand so much and thinks they’re that good, he uses that brand also for glasses lens, which I thought was cool.

I have plenty of room in my gadget bag for them, so I look forward to their arrival and subsequent use. Thanks for the help!

I have a photo with a snow background, though I’m almost tempted to NOT use it because it seems like cheating? Thoughts? I can upload tomorrow for you to see.

Do my entries simply suck? Are they not good enough? Apparently I’m not flashy enough for the contest this week. Guess I should have thrown in a 4th of July fireworks picture to get more than 2 votes a picture.

Sorry to be so bitter when there are some really good photos this week.

A couple of mentions of the Hopper being full has me wondering:
    1. How far out can contests be scheduled, and
    2. Must it be the day of the last scheduled contest before filling it up again?

Granted, I’m well aware there are lives outside of Farktography and those take precedence. With the abundance of contest ideas already reaching the vote level required, can more be scheduled ahead than normal to accommodate or is that generally a bad idea? Not trying to tell anyone how to do their job at all, just curious as to the inner workings.

Kes, I had considered that, but the height at that point would be kind of pointless, it’d look way too small and wouldn’t convey what I wanted to with it. I essentially cropped the same pictures 3 times, though the first one I might just leave out of consideration because it’s the same as the third really, but the third is better. I haven’t uploaded them to Photobucket yet anyway so it’s not a huge deal.

Well that’s a bummer. I guess I’ll go with my third version then. Thanks.

How wide can the picture be? Is there a limit to it? I cropped one of mine and as it sits in Photoshop right now (resizing before uploading), it’s 383 high by 928 wide. Will that be too wide? Should I crop it so it’s less wide (I can do that, I just liked it better this way).

    Thanks.

So I have a question for the ones who understand the more technical side of cameras in terms of exposure, sensors, etc.

For Christmas, our friend received an MRE of beef stew but didn’t use the heating thing that comes with it (magnesium, sodium, and something else). I thought it would be pretty to take a picture of, but as those tend to burn quickly and rather brightly, Husband is worried about damage to the sensor. He also mentioned something like that concerning lasers. Is such a thing possible, to damage the sensor on my camera by taking a picture of the sparky, arc-y thing? I thought it’d be pretty and am hoping to avoid archive diving for this one, but I have gotten some neat shots with my P&S, particularly around July 4th, which is when I’m thinking of taking them from. I also have an idea for using the Swedish Firesteel we have (if it’s still any good, it got left outside for a while so it may not be). But I thought the MRE heating element would be cool, but now I’m concerned and don’t want to ruin my (still relatively), new, spiffy camera. Thoughts?

Hubby was going to pick me up some polarizers for my stocking this Christmas, but he ran out of money (spent $80 instead on new headphones for me). I’ve been thinking about getting some for a while anyhow. It would seem, however, that Newegg’s stock of 58 mm filters is, well, out, so unless I purchase locally or from someone else for more (assuming that stock never comes back in), I’ll be waiting a bit anyway. Add that to the change at work from every other week checks to now twice a month checks (thanks to us getting bought out back in April and now being transitioned the rest of the way over to the new company), so things will take some adjusting money wise. I’ll keep a look out for a deal on filters though.

He’ll be going outside again tomorrow, so I’ll try lowering the ISO to 200 (maybe 100) and see what I can get with that. I do have more range to go on the f/stop, so I think I might up that too and then only adjust the shutter speed as needed and see how I do. I’d like to get a shot anyway (if I can without the filter) of sparkling snow.

Out of the some 200 pictures of him this afternoon (I know, I probably take too many), I chose 17 that were what I consider the best. I’ve tried uploading them to my normal photobucket account, but apparently it’s being dumb tonight, so I thought I’d make these my first uploads to Flickr instead (I already had yahoo, so I thought I’d meander over to Flickr too, but it’s not pro) and see how that worked out. I’d like some critiques. Most I color corrected slightly or tried to bring into proper brightness/contrast/highlights/shadows balance. Hopefully you’ll be able to see the full size if you want, or if not, I’ll be uploading these to Photobucket at some point or to one of my Facebook albums (if any of you want to look me up and send me a friend invite, I’m in the Farktography group there).

The one idea I had, or thought I had, my husband said was weak, so I’m not sure if I’ll do it. Y’know, map of the U.S. with pushpins representing places to go/see…. I really want to do something, but everything I can think of to photograph, if I had it (or the situation) to photograph, it’d be real, not a dream any more.

Eep Kes! You’re worser off than I am! Rapid strep for me was positive on Thursday evening, and doc prescribed a burst of prednisone to help with the throat swelling (wonder drug) and then penicillin to kill the infection. Hubby got his culture back this morning (his rapid was negative Monday morning, he went in for starting to feel it this last weekend), and he didn’t get prednisone for his throat, but he did get penicillin, too. Oh, and somehow the 4-year-old managed to get a skin infection on his middle finger that wasn’t getting better after like a week, and the doc prescribed something for him to help that go away, and after a couple of days on that he’s looking better, too. The 6-month-old? He had shots on Monday, was cranky for a couple of days, but is better now. It’s been one hell of a month. I am feeling better (4 more days of penicillin), and Hubby is too. We only hope it stays that way. Thanks for all the well wishes. 🙂

Ear infections aren’t fun. I don’t remember them, but I had them often as a kid until I got tubes in my ears around age 9 (which I don’t remember). Hubby gets sinus infections every year, and those aren’t fun either. I hope you feel better soon, Kes, and that the doc’s wrong about not feeling better until after Christmas (that it’s before that you start getting better).
