as i mentioned earlier i used new ones. stuff that i like that didn’t have a theme to hang them on. since the voters didn’t seem to care too much for last years entries this looked like a better way to go. still didn’t break into the top 50 but 60th is better than what i’ve been doing. 🙂

I drool just about everytime dalantech uploads something new. It’s his lens of choice.

those are outstanding. it wears me out just thinking of the time and effort that takes.

i took the “from the last year” part. one isn’t all that it could be but i like the subject. the other two are (IMO) interesting and fairly well shot. we shall see.

It sounds a lot like this, which actually exists already: http://www.spiderholster.com/single-camera-system.html

    i really like(d) that.

the (d) is because i went back and checked the price. ouch. i’ll stick with my neck strap worn diagonally instead. doesn’t bounce or swing too much and positions at the eye quickly.

They were actually tap-in inserts.. I’ve seen them before, and similar, in the parts drawer with furniture hardware.

hadn’t seen tap in inserts before. the far left ones are what i was thinking of. i had to repair a stool at work that has those. some toothpicks (or the whittled equivalent) to repair the hole, a bit of elmers carpenters glue and presto — the inserts hold again. the t-nuts to the right of the inserts work ok for some applications but probably not for this one.

and i have no idea why they far right things are included in that photo.

I then put a fair amount of JB Weld in the hole and countersink area, and tapped the threaded insert in.

threaded inserts don’t work that way. did you mean t-nuts?

yeah i’m being picky, sue me 🙂

they really are nice. you had mentioned needing sealed shafts/sticks. are these handles sealed to the tip or did you have to seal them there?

one of mine wouldn’t pass the 51% thing but the cloud is slap in the center of the frame and (i think) obviously the subject of the shot. the other elements are for composition.

actually the cloud is probably <20% of the frame but i shot that frame just for the cloud. took it one day in my front yard just because i liked the cloud and the way it fit between the trees. of my other two one is scapish and the other semi scapish. i passed on shots that had cloud backgrounds because they weren't really shot as cloud pictures. although a couple are nice.

when i bought my D3000 i also got a AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm F:4.5-5.6 ED VR and really like it. replaced the 18-55 kit lens with the D7000 kit lens 18-105 and find it works much better for what i shoot.

Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 — as you probably know that is an FX lens which means you will get the 1.6 crop factor on your new D7000. with the 18-105 and the 70 with crop at 112 you won’t lose any appreciable coverage. and you get an effective 480 at full zoom. BUT you will pay almost $200 at MSRP more than the 55-300 i have.

i’ve got an LG Flatron 2340v for my main monitor and a Samsung 204T for my other in a dual monitor setup. the LG is 23″ wide screen and back lit LED. it’s HD at 1080, etc. etc. and pretty nice. i haven’t tweaked it and it tends to run a bit too blue.

the Samsung is 20″ square and a bit truer to real life color wise.

as far as recommendations go i really like Samsung for quality and customer service. i had a 19″ CRT die at 35 months and they sent me a re-certified 19″ wide screen since my CRT had been discontinued. because my CRT wouldn’t fit in the wide screen box i did have to pay shipping on the return. but they didn’t want a CC in the meantime and the shipping was $40 so i was quite happy.

got the LG because it was on sale for <$200. couldn't find a Samsung for that money.

got some cloud shots driving home. and i’m looking at them with the windows picture viewer and thinking about how to tweak them for better appearance. now my new setup is dual monitor so i grab the window and drag it onto the other monitor. damn i sure need to get these calibrated to match each other. but it reminded me that no matter what i do i have no control over the voters monitor. so i may not too much time trying to make the entries “perfect”.

i shot some candids at a ren faire by holding the camera at waist level then shooting. that will work if you are at the right distance with a fairly wide lens. didn’t ask anyone for permission. one couple realized what i was doing and made a point of looking toward the camera and smiling. of course there folks in costume expect to get photographed.

folks in public have no expectation of privacy but if i see that someones is turning away i won’t take the shot. otherwise folks on the street are fair game. OTOH i’m not big on people pictures so it doesn’t come up much.

i voted no. while i understand the reasons behind yes there are too many other ways to trip the shutter than having a person do it. i guess my concern is the slippery slope thing. assume the whole setup is done by A but there’s no tripod to complete the shot. person B going to be the tripod and is told hold the camera like such and such framing us so that XX in in the frame, yada, yada. but at the moment of exposure it’s person B how actually has control of the framing.

here’s an example of what i’m thinking. you are sightseeing with someone and want a picture of you and them in front of the local tourist attraction. so you pose your companion where you want the shot to be and then hand the camera to a trustworthy stranger to snap the actual photo. when you are showing the photos later you wouldn’t take credit for the shot.
