And interesting because they actually talk to the photographers and show them working and interacting with the models so you can see what they’re doing to get their results.

so you get to look over their shoulders while they photoshop the hell out of the original image? 🙂

watching most any professional work is interesting to me.

i’ve had to segregate my cats from my (not so new) dog. when i first got him i didn’t do a good job keeping him from chasing them and now they can’t be in the same room together. makes things difficult for all of us and means getting new cute cat shots that much harder.

You know, I’ve lived in Harlem for six years and never once felt as though I wasn’t welcome or unwanted. Now, there are places in the South Bronx that I could only be caught dead in.

in ’68-’69 i lived in a residential neighborhood that was 95% black. two houses away on the north south street were the mexicans comprising another 4.998% and then there were the 4 white folks in my house (it was cut into apts) and the 3 across the street. never had a problem but shopping at the mom and pop corner grocery meant hate stares and shopping the liquor store on the edge of the neighborhood elicited comments about whitety. and i was told most emphatically not to go into “ida’s” a local bar.

orionid in early ’66 had occasion to mingle with a bunch of folks from compton/watts. these folks were black and brown and had lived in the area for years. once some initial tension went away and they started talking it turned out many lived with a block of each other but had never interacted. there were stores and activities for each group and never the twain was met. i was, and still am, amazed.

then again i lived with a woman in east LA for a few weeks in ’67 and that was a whole different experience. i’d seen more signs in english in mexico than there.

race relations fascinate me. at work we have hispanic, vietnamese, black, white, one japanese and one east indian. he’s my boss and very gregarious so his involvement in peoples lives is non typical. while we all get along well and everyone seems to care about each other (we’ve worked together for many years) at lunch each group tends to clump together.

very interesting. i have a panasonic color video camera that mated with an RCA VHS potable tape deck. it has a bunch of video controls, an option to add text, etc and i bought the camera in ’86. bought the VHS tape player/deck in ’85. these were state of the art for their time and yet it would be two years before a semi decent still camera came out. and only in b/w. and for $20K as opposed to my total investment of roughly $1000 for the camera and deck.

having no idea what the technical difficulties were it’s hard to understand this discrepancy.

and it surprises me that so few of these are still around.

    anyway thanks for the link.

urban is the code word for ghetto. you will have to travel into the most ghetto area you can reach in a 4 hour drive. anything else doesn’t count. and please be safe.

    🙂

Please, PLEASE don’t make me go back to Compton. I’ve driven through there before after taking a wrong turn.

    /A very, very wrong turn…

i used to run parts in the LA area. compton was never a problem. of course that was ’64. and before the watts riots of ’65.

    csb time
in early ’66 i met a guy who lived in compton. arranged to come see him one night. he lived above a neighborhood bar and when i walked in there and ask for him there was a long awkward silence before someone offered to check and see if he were home. he was of course and happy to see me. he, my girlfriend and i went to a nearby nightclub to see his wife. she worked there. white people present = three. me, my girlfriend and the club owner, who had every stereotypical characteristic of the Jew owner. until that night i had never been disliked for nothing more than my skin color. nor had i heard disparaging comments based on nothing more than that. it was an interesting evening.

not only did my attempt at a new photo go wrong today but archive diving is producing nada. i can’t find shots i can see in my mind. and the ones i am finding are sucky.

what i see in the contest so far looks good so i’ll just stand aside and cheer this week.

well, the topic says “urban”. To me that means “city”. My question really pertains to the location of said art. if there is fantastic outdoor art on a farm in kansas, is that OK? or a small town somewhere or the suburbs…

I’ll just skip that one then, water isn’t going to a problem for me.

it will for me. i stopped in city park on the way home from work to get some shots of the fountain which just recently was turned on. it’s now behind a locked gate. WTF. some staffer said the gate is locked due to construction that is happening in the area.

so you know there is going to be construction and you install a pretty new wrought iron fence first. then instead of separating the construction (which has been planned for two years) with it’s own fence you lock off the newly working fountain. yeah new orleans, once again demonstrating why folks think you suck and stay away from city park.

and i spent an hour in traffic this morning because NOPD couldn’t clear a wreck off the high rise. and this about two miles from signs telling you to move accidents from the travel lanes.

no i don’t live in N.O. just travel through it to get to work.

We probably have time to coordinate that if we want to do it again this time. Maybe ennuipoet and Curious could help us out with that.

damn i need to read these more often than once a month.

as far as helping goes i just interfaced with Drew for the crossovers and think you could do that better now. you have more pull than i do. a heads up to Drew to greenlight “our” caturday thread should be all it needs.

well and someone to submit the caturday thread itself. which could be done right after the farktography contest or as late as saturday morning probably.

these google alerts things all mean looking at your gmail. i haven’t looked at my gmail in months. set it up because i need a gmail account to register for a website years ago. website turned out to be crappy and i have yahoo for a throw away email. the new fark comments notification thing is interesting on occasion.

once at a large body of water i got a really nice dragonfly shot. the last time i was at a large body of non running water i couldn’t get the little bastards to land for their photo.

if anyone is interested here are some rail shots. that’s a minolta XD-11 with the 50mm prime at each end of the bellows and mounted to a minolta rail system.

and just FYI if you go to flickr and some of your sets seem to be missing — check to see if your pro account expired. that was disconcerting.

^^ What he said. Also, how does one get such sharp focus with that lens when everything I’ve read says you need a rail system because even tiny changes in distance result in sharp changes in focus?

a lot of his are F13 and actually fairly shallow DOF. he mentions several times shooting for an hour to get one usable frame. a rail is nice (i have one for my film camera) but even then the slightest gust of wind can defeat it.

it comes down to patience. lots and lots of it. and being willing to throw out 95% of what you shoot. so more patience. 🙂

what i don’t understand is where he finds the variety of bugs he shoots. my yard and surrounding area doesn’t have weevils. at least not that i know of.

time to get another copy of the junior guide to bugs. and specifically for here.
