ParticipantDrew is good about not trying to get uber rich. and he’s fortunate that loyal folks will still work for free as mods. if he ever does an IPO expect the site to tank in the following year.
the dialup info is/was gleaned from reading the PSAEF regularly. not only are there photoshop regulars on dialup but far more of the country has crappy internet than one would expect in 2010. especially after all the hoopla about the roll out of fiber and the other giveaways to the big ISPs.
as far as landlines go i could switch to cable internet and cell phone only but after katrina i had phone service before cable came back. and a landline with a corded phone has proved more reliable than anything else during hurricanes for me.

Participant1) fark doesn’t as a favor to the many still on dialup.
2) to speed page loads.
3) to have more room to sell ads.
i report, you decide.

Participantposted this on FB too. i have that 18-105mm lens and really like it. better for how i use the camera and good optically. or to my not so technically critical eye it is.
the D7000 hit’s a sweet spot but my budget didn’t allow for it.

Participanti just saw them.

Participantleft but i’m left eye dominant. and although right handed shoot a rifle off my left shoulder. when i was in navy boot camp we had to qualify with an M-1. which ejects from the right side and the range guys said the brass would hit me if i shot from my left shoulder.
so they made me shoot right hand/shoulder after dry firing some. i was pulling 4 targets to my left. and they politely took me off the range. but since it was navy boot camp somehow i passed that part. 🙂

Participantlooks interesting. but being Canadian do i need to submit 0.9973 of a photo 🙂

ParticipantMan I am kinda worried about my second entry. The fire crackers sure pop out but now the background cloth I used is looking less than true b/w. It almost looks like it has a greenish tint to it? I know it is actually black and medium dark gray. its the same piece of cloth I used in last weeks theme behind the skull candles. Is it close enough? I can pull it and pick something else if I have to.
the background for my original second and third shots looked too brown so i re-shot them using a piece of gray matte board.

ParticipantPerhaps not anal, but constipated?
nope. those who have been here a few years know i’m a purist in interrupting theme descriptions. other words have been used and as a rule i keep quiet now. this one just set me off. no offense was meant and i hope none implied.

ParticipantTake a photo that appears to be black and white/grayscale with the exception of one object or color. Difficulty: No selective desaturation or other post-processing tricks to create the effect.
Theme suggestion kudos to mopsy!
I am thrilled with the response and quality of the photos. When this discussion thread first started out I thought, “Oh no! It’s going to be the first time that no photos show up for a contest!” But whoa, the challenge went out and many responded! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
i’m happy that you are happy mopsy and i like a lot of the entries. BUT we sure are being liberal with the B&W/greyscale part.
yeah, i’m known for being anal, why did you ask.
Curious
Participantgetting that SO their own camera does help. and then being interested in what they shot adds to that.
however being overly “well if you’d used a different f stop” or “remember the rule of thirds” can get that nice camera thrown at you 🙂
Curious
Participantwell you guys have confirmed my believe that i’ll get clobbered again. i really really need to put more effort into my shots.

Participantover the last ten years my lady friend and my relationship has gone through several changes. but one of the reasons we still have a relationship at all is photography. she has gone from being bored by it to an avid photographer. while she hasn’t developed an interest in the finer technical points and uses an inexpensive point and shoot camera she is always up for a day trip/photo excursion. and will point out things i didn’t see. or things i don’t want to shoot 🙂
she has even started taking photos of things that “might be useful for a future farktography contest”. after a couple of years of just looking over my shoulder and saying things like “you could use that shot” i signed her up for fark and she now enters occasionally on her own.

Participantthanks HamstersFromHell it looks like a bunch of work but as you noted better at the front end than each photo.
Curious
Participantthanks CauseISaidSo. reading your post will have to be redone when i’m not rushed. and i’ll read the links too.
a paper profile is similar to a printer profile in that it tells the printer what medium the ink will be applied to. as you no doubt know different paper finishes react/take ink differently. not only is gloss different that matte but gloss brand A is different than gloss brand B. sort of like illford v kodak paper for darkroom use.
according to the install disc and epson’s site the proper profiles were loaded into PS with the printer installation. or actually the installation of the IIC profiles.
i’m about to build another box and once that’s done i’ll have to take the time to really learn this stuff.
